Chapter 5: The Lady’s Side
As Yu Tian approached Su Xueling, he noticed his chances begin to decrease once again.
He paused. Could she be hiding a hidden treasure? he wondered, and the number showed [100%].
Now he understood what was happening.
She probably thought he was going to do something to her and wanted to take him down with her if he tried anything. Thinking of this, the number shifted and settled at [90%].
It seemed he needed to reassure her that he was not an enemy.
He knelt on one knee and greeted her respectfully.
"This humble servant greets Lady Su," he said.
She looked at him suspiciously, analyzing every movement he made, ready to take action if he did anything strange.
"You know me?" she asked.
"Wait, servant? Are you from the Drifting Cloud Sect?" she asked.
"Lady Su is right. I joined the sect as a servant ten years ago. My name is Yu Tian." As he said this, he reached into his pocket and retrieved his identity plaque.
He thought to himself that fortunately, those guys hadn't stolen his identity plaque too, otherwise it would've been even harder to convince her.
She gazed at it with interest. Seeing she wanted to see it up close, he slid it to her on the ground. She caught it and analyzed it carefully.
"This is indeed a legit identity plaque. I'll believe you for now," she said, pushing it back. He caught it and put it in his pocket, looking at his chances again. They had risen to seventy percent. It seemed she trusted him for now.
This girl was Su Xueling, the daughter of the Drifting Cloud Sect master. He hadn't expected to meet such a person here, and in such condition too.
"What are you looking at?" she asked, covering herself protectively with her hands.
"Lady Su's injuries look serious. Is there any way this servant can help?" he asked.
He wasn't particularly loyal to the Drifting Cloud Sect that he'd willingly serve her for no reason. It was just that the sect master's daughter was known as a genius with a high-grade spiritual root, already at the peak of Qi Gathering at just twenty years old. But this alone wasn't enough for him to stick with her - it would've been if she wasn't injured.
But when he checked the calculations, he had a ten percent chance of survival by himself and a thirty percent chance when he was with her. It wasn't really a high chance, but much better than his ten percent.
Something he found strange though was that he had the same ten percent chance of leaving the forest by himself, but a one percent chance when with her.
He wondered if it was because it would be hard to navigate the Black Forest with an injured person. Then why was the chance of survival with her higher? Was it because she could use the trump card as a last resort?
He didn't understand completely but chose to stick with her for now.
"Cut the act. What do you want from me?" Her expression turned serious, and Yu Tian saw his chances drop again to one percent.
…
"What did I even do? I was being nice!" he thought, though he didn't dare say it out loud.
This lady seemed to have something wrong with her - why did her emotions change so fast?
Yu Tian wondered if that was actually the problem. It made sense. There was no way a servant would be respectful to the young lady of the sect, especially when she was in such a state. The servants weren't treated all that well in the sect, and many of them held deep resentment toward those at the top like the lady, though they wouldn't openly show it.
He wondered if she was suspicious of his enthusiasm.
"I would like Lady Su's help," he said, bowing his head.
"Ho?" she said with a smile. "What kind of help do you need from a dying weak girl like me? If you want riches, they're all in my space bag. You can just kill me and take them for yourself. Or if you're afraid, you can just wait till I die and take them," she spoke.
"That turned dark quick," he thought.
"Lady Su misunderstood," he said.
"How so?" she asked.
Yu Tian let out a sigh. He then proceeded to explain to her what had happened to him the day before, receiving the Qi Building Pill, the beating. Of course, he made sure to hide some details like the existence of his calculation ability.
When she heard his story, she nodded to herself. She thought to herself that she hadn't expected the competition in the outer sect to be so fierce. She looked to the side. Well, she also had her own challenges in the inner sect.
She sighed and then looked at him.
"Alright, you want me to protect you when we get out, right?" she asked.
"Yes," he said.
"Alright. I promise to protect you as one of my own when we get out," she said.
Yu Tian had a surprised expression when he heard this. She smiled. "Regretting it already?" she asked.
Yu Tian thought to himself that the sect master had two sons and one daughter. Since the sect master was getting old, the three children were each competing for the sect master position, thus each had their own faction.
The eldest son had the most support from the elders and core disciples. The second son had support from the inner and outer sect. As for the daughter, she didn't have much support being a woman.
Saying she would protect him as one of her own meant that he would be in her faction, and this meant he might be targeted by the other factions. He looked at her, thinking to himself that her condition right now was probably due to one of the two sons wanting to take out the competition early.
[90%] the number showed.
Damn, he thought. He sighed silently. He had really gotten himself in some hot water.
Well, he would cross that bridge when he got there. For now, he needed to find a way out of here.
"I'm not," he responded firmly.
She looked at him, surprised by his response. She analyzed him, thinking to herself that he was quite smart for a servant - a normal person would've thought that taking an injured companion would have lower chances of success in leaving the forest but he was thinking further ahead.
If he got out of the forest alone, he wouldn't survive long.
She smiled. "What an interesting guy," she thought.
"Maybe with him... I can finally assassinate the sect master and destroy the Drifting Cloud Sect," she thought, her expression darkening.
"Lady Su?" Yu Tian asked, noticing her expression.
She smiled at him. "Good. Then, please take care of me from now on," she said enthusiastically.
Yu Tian thought to himself that the lady really switched faces quickly.
As he was thinking of this, the chances of her killing him dropped to five percent. He smiled. It seemed he had succeeded. Even so, he couldn't help but feel like he had gotten himself into something dangerous.
