Chapter 222 – Sandcastle

Maya's parents took Lydia and Pete on a tour through the beastfolk capital to show them around, in the hope that they would like the place and decide to stay as a result. The sisters' parents were immediately fascinated by the diverse beastfolk, their colorful looks, and animal features. However, they were still obviously hesitant, even though Pete was warming up to the idea more and more.

"Ah, no, you can't eat sand!" Sophia and the others had gone to the beach next to Kel's ocean, but their little sister was even more curious than Sophia had thought. "Nibbling on a pinecone is one thing, but sand is no good!" She quickly reached for Sari's tiny arm, who was sitting in the sand, before she was able to put the contents of her hand inside her mouth.

"Nahh~!" The little girl did not appreciate that and started to get vocal about it while struggling to free her hand.

"Are you also curious about how sand tastes?" Watching the scene unfold while remembering the last time the baby tried something, Chloe looked at Steph next to her.

"I am NOT a baby!" The dog-girl glared at her. "I already know what sand tastes like!"

"Why do you know that?" Maya also looked at her while raising an eyebrow.

"As if you've never planted yourself face-first into the sand as you chased a ball while playing on the beach!"

"Maybe not the ball part, but I see your point now." The cat-girl could follow her logic. "I still can't believe just how much of a dog you've become."

"Ehehe~." It was a compliment for her.

"I would agree with you there, but what she just described has been a common occurrence ever since our first family beach holiday when she was five." Even though Sophia was still busy dealing with her baby sister, she still found time to make this absolutely necessary comment.

"I've always been a dog at heart!" Steph didn't see the issue. "I've just finally become able to represent that feeling with my looks!"

"Fair enough." The tiger had nothing to add there.

"NaaH!" Sari, on the other hand, had lots of things to add.

"Sari, my dear, sand isn't good for you." Sophia used her calmest and gentle-sounding voice. "It doesn't taste any good, either."

"Not at all!" Steph energetically shook her head.

"Muh?" The little girl tilted her head in response.

"It's gritty and crunchy, and you won't get rid of it for hours! It's super bad!"

"Nn?" Sari had no idea what Steph wanted.

"There's something much more fun you can do with sand." Saying so, she smiled at her littlest sister before gently wrapping her tail around Sari's arm to stop her from eating the sand, as she needed her hands for her demonstration. "You can build all kinds of things with it." A moment later, she held up her hand over the sand in front of them and used water magic to make it wet. Then, she used her hands to form it into a small hill before smoothing the sides and adding a few steps and grooves to make it look like a tiny fortress. "Sandcastles!"

"Hum~!" Seeing her sister play with the sand like that, Sari's eyes started sparkling, and she got fascinated by it enough that she let go of the sand in her hand. A second later, she immediately reached for the sandcastle and dug both her hands right into it.

"A very understandable and relatable reaction." Steph couldn't blame her for that.

"I am a little concerned that while Sari is still this small, she's already taking after her sisters so much." Maya awkwardly scratched her cheek. "Imagine having three of them in a couple of years."

"Sounds fun!" Chloe didn't feel like that would be anything negative.

"Thank you!" Sophia and Steph smiled at her.

"Da~!"

"Well, she's cute, so it's fine." The cat-girl gave up.

"The three sisters really are similar." The fox let out a small chuckle.

"Hah..." Maya rolled her eyes in return.

"My poor fortress…" The blonde then looked at her destroyed sandcastle that Sari was still happily running her arms and hands through while creating a massive mess.

"Well, it just means you have to make a new and better one~." Smiling at her tiger, Maya kneeled next to her and started working on her own little sand sculpture.

"That's the spirit!" Motivated by the cat-girl, Steph energetically leaped forward into the sand to start her own project.

"I can see why your beach holidays ended up with her eating sand so many times." Maya lightly rolled her eyes.

"As long as she's having fun~." Chloe didn't mind her girlfriend being the way she was. After letting out a small giggle, she then also joined the girls, and the group spent the next hour teaching Sari how to build sandcastles together.

"Gagagah! Gah!" While the girls were playing on the beach together, Sari suddenly became very vocal for some reason while pointing at the ocean at the same time with a big smile on her face.

"Oh, that got you excited, huh?" Chuckling at that, Sophia turned to look at Kel, who had gotten closer to the beach they were on. "Though, is that really the correct reaction for a human baby?"

"There's absolutely no doubt that she's our sister!" Steph liked her reaction, as well.

"I don't think it really matters that she's human." Maya tilted her head. "It would be an odd reaction for the beastfolk, too. Like, even though we know they exist, no one has ever seen one."

"I also don't think that the human part matters." Chloe nodded. "After all, she's a baby and doesn't know what does and what doesn't exist. I think the concerning part is her being excited about seeing a massive mountain of a beast."

"That's because we sisters are fearless!" The dog-girl proudly puffed out her chest while boasting to her girlfriend.

"I think you just lack situational awareness." Maya shook her head. "Like, completely."

"I'm fairly sure those things are two sides of the same coin in at least nine out of ten times." The fox-girl looked at her while shrugging.

"Hah." The cat-girl paused for a moment. "You know what, that point goes to you."

"I can't exactly deny that, either." Sophia scratched her cheek before dropping the topic and looking in Kel's direction again. "If you scare her, I'll tell Blu to use more than 1% of its power to mess you up." Her stare got terrifying. "Make sure not to put any power into your voice, either."

"I am hurt about how little you think of me." The dragon sounded slightly pouty.

"I'm just extremely overprotective when it comes to children."

"I guess that's a valid reason to threaten with the unleashed feathery blue nightmare." He saw where she was coming from. "So, whose kid of you all is this? The relationship dynamic between all of you is far above my understanding, so literally any combination of you girls could be the mother, after all."

"…" The girls went silent and just awkwardly looked at each other before Sophia shook her head. "This is Sari. She's the little sister of Steph and me. Her parents are our parents. We're just babysitting her right now."

"Ahh, I see." He made a slight nod with his massive head.

"Not to mention that Sophia and I are also sisters, so literally any combination of us being her mothers is a bit much!" Steph looked at the dragon while lightly shaking her head.

"Is that really the response you should have here…?" Kel's confusion around their relationship with each other only grew.

"That's the most important part here!" She raised her voice. "While we, biologically speaking, are barely, if at all, related to each other any longer after the many and big changes to our bodies since coming to this world, our emotional bond makes this super impossible!"

"There are a few more retorts I want to make, but this is indeed the by far biggest factor here." Sophia reacted with a big nod as she wholeheartedly agreed with her sister.

"Yeah, I'm not versed enough in romance to understand the arrangement you all have going on." Kel gave up. "Though, that last part seems logical to me in one way or another."

"To be fair, we seem rather close from an outsider perspective, so I can see where your confusion is coming from." Chloe smiled at the dragon.

"Yes, close is exactly the word I was thinking about." Kel stared at the fox for a moment before exaggeratedly rolling his massive eyes.

"I did that to myself." She couldn't blame him for that.

"Anyway, that sure is a fearless baby." He finally dropped the topic and looked at Sari, who had been smiling and babbling at him the entire time. "There are few who won't get spooked by me, let alone babies."

"It's a sure sign of us being sisters!" Steph gave him a V-sign. "All three of us are naturally fearless, after all."

"We went over this before; it's because you lack situational awareness!" Maya reminded them of the very same conversation from before.

"My dear cat, those are the same things." Kel focused his stare on Maya. "I would know because I'm one of the most fearless beings in existence."

"He really does have little situational awareness." Sophia nodded a few times. "And I would know because that's my specialty."

"I hate how self-aware everyone here is, though." Maya only reacted with a small grumble.

Afterward, Kel got a little closer to the beach the group was on, so Sophia could properly introduce him to the excited Sari.
