Chapter 221 – Parental group exploration

Sophia and Steph were babysitting their little sister, Sari, while their parents went to explore the beastfolk capital together with Theo and Eve. The older sisters, together with Maya and Chloe, decided to take Sari to a beach of the sea Kel was currently creating to show the baby her first ocean and build a sandcastle with her.

"It's too late to have doubts, right?" While Lydia and Pete handed over Sari to their other daughters, the duo also met up with Maya's parents in the mansion in the capital.

"I would assume so." Scratching his cheek, Pete looked at his wife with a wry smile. As previously discussed, he had opted for plain clothes, a sweater wrapped around his waist, and a wide, flat cap on his head to create the illusion of hiding any animal features he didn't have. Lydia wore a heavily pleated and fluffy skirt, paired with a white-rimmed, floppy hat that allowed for ample space for any type of ears, achieving the same effect.

"I don't think having doubts is all that unexpected." Theo smiled at the couple from Earth. "After all, this is quite the situation to deal with, all things considered."

"Thank you." The two were happy that he understood.

"Yes, it's understandable, but you don't really want to back down now, do you?" Eve just stared at the couple.

"Of course not." The two vehemently shook their heads.

"Good." She started smiling. "We're not going to push you into anything, but I think our place deserves to be given a fair chance."

"Even more so because your daughters love it so much." Theo sided with his wife.

"We know."

"Okay, let's get going." Content with their reply, Eve pointed at the door leading out of the mansion.

----------------

"Hmm, it looks way more normal than I had imagined." The parents had just left and walked through the neighborhood, where Pete looked around with wide eyes. "It's quite similar to a high-class area in richer cities."

"Well, that's exactly where we are right now?" Pete looked at him while tilting his head to the side. "This is one of the noble areas of the capital, which makes sense as we just left Sophia's mansion, who is part of the nobility at the very least."

"Ah, fair enough."

"What were you expecting in the first place?" Eve also faced him.

"That's a good question." He wasn't actually sure why he reacted like that.

"If anything, I'm pleasantly surprised by how quiet and tranquil this area is. It's immaculately clean, as well." Lydia was also taking in the sights. "That's especially surprising when remembering that we're in the middle of the capital of this country."

"Why's that surprising?" The cat-woman looked confused.

"…" She opted not to reply.

"Should we head to a more lively place?" Theo didn't want them to get bored.

"Is medium-lively possible?" The woman from Earth tilted her head. "I'd like to not get immediately overwhelmed for a change."

"Without Sophia around, that might actually be possible." The cat-man let out a chuckle.

"Ahaha…" The couple had the same reaction.

"Alright, let's get to a smaller shopping area for the time being, then." Eve lightly clapped her hands. "We could also have lunch first."

"Oh, that doesn't sound like a bad idea. I could eat something." Pete liked the idea.

"Is it okay for us to eat food from a different world?" Lydia looked a little concerned. "I mean, sometimes, you even need to watch out when being in a different country because you're not used to their food and how they prepare it."

"That's never stopped me before when we were traveling!" Her husband didn't see the problem.

"And how many days have you spent on the toilet already because of this, dear?" She just stared at him.

"Worth it!" He regretted nothing.

"The kinship to the sisters is becoming more obvious." The cat-woman let out a small chuckle. "This one especially sounded just like Steph, judging by the few times I met her. I definitely wouldn't be surprised hearing Sophia say the same lines, too."

"Hehe." He actually seemed rather proud about that.

"Well, I'd assume Mira would've warned us about food if it was a problem, so I'll assume it's fine." She scratched her cheek. "Also, Sophia and Steph are incredibly serious about us being in this world, so I don't think they would've kept that info from us, either."

"Okay, let's see if we can find a nice place to eat, then." Eve was glad that the two were enjoying themselves.

----------------

"Wow!" After the parents had left the noble living area and entered a slightly more popular shopping district, the woman from Earth wasn't sure where to focus her eyes when watching the pedestrians from afar. "Sophia told me that the beastfolk are diverse, but this is something else!" She kept focusing on everyone around them. "I've only met people with animal ears and tails, but there are people with a lot more fur, too! Woah, some have scales and wings, as well!" Lydia's eyes darted all over the place.

"Some, while humanoid-like at first glance, also have facial features like animals or paws for hands and arms, fascinating!" Pete was just as curious. "I guess it makes sense if someone like Fen exists that the whole spectrum between him and others with barely any visual animal features is covered."

"That is indeed the case." The cat-man nodded at them. "Pretty much everything from 1% to 99% animal is represented in the beastfolk. It doesn't have to be a single type of animal, either. Though increasingly rare, the more their parents differ from each other, the more children can inherit multiple different traits from their parents. However, the norm is for them to take after one of their parents, or both, if they're from the same animal family, like Eve and I are. Taking after their grandparents or even more distant relatives is nothing too out of the ordinary, either. Especially if said family tree is on the more mixed side."

"Wow!" The humans had nothing else to say.

"Is there anyone who caught your fancy already?" Eve looked around before facing the couple. "In case you do decide on the move and feel like representing the beastfolk in one way or another, like your daughters do."

"I think that might be a bit hasty." Lydia stared back at her. "Anything with feathers or extra appendages might be a bit much for me, though."

"I also doubt our daughters would ever forgive us if we were to choose scales over fluff."

"I can see that happening." Theo let out a small chuckle.

"I don't think I'd feel comfortable with a tail, either." Lydia then took a quick glance at Maya's parents. "No offense, of course. I just think suddenly adding one to myself would be a bit odd. I'm not as adventurous as our daughters, after all."

"That's understandable enough." Eve didn't blame her for that.

"I agree on the tail part." Pete nodded as he looked at his wife. "I feel like I could get used to animal ears, though. As long as they're not too obtrusive or big."

"Really?" Lydia tilted her head before looking around again. "Mhhm, I guess? I'm still having mixed feelings about the whole changing one's body, but if it's just some small ears to fit in and make our daughters happy, maybe?" She then made a slight pause. "I-If we decide to move to this place, that is."

"Heh." Eve's expression turned ever-so-slightly smug in response.

"I do not appreciate the smirk." Lydia slowly shook her head while looking back at her.

"Staying on topic, just having animal ears would be more than enough to turn you into full members of the beastfolk." Theo smiled at them. "As mentioned earlier, they come in all kinds of variations, so just having ears of animal origin is rather common."

"That's, uhh… reassuring to hear." The duo from Earth got a little awkward over how they had ended up giving it much more thought than they had intended.

"On the topic of ears, does them being of animal origin affect your hearing?" Pete tilted his head. "Like, do you hear differently from humans with them?"

"How are we supposed to know how humans hear?" The cat-man shrugged.

"You know what, fair point." There was nothing else he could say there. "I guess I'll ask Sophia and Steph about that. They have experience with both, after all."

"I'd assume so, though." Theo gave it some more thought. "It's pretty common knowledge that the different races within the beastfolk hear, see, and smell in their own way, depending on what animal origin they are and what parts of their body resemble it."

"That's so interesting!" He lightly clapped his hands. "If, and I mean if, we decide to do it, it might be worth taking this into consideration, as we can actually choose our ears and how it would affect our hearing!"

"Dear, didn't Sophia tell us that we can just make it look like we have animal features instead of actually changing our bodies?" Lydia just stared at her husband.

"A-Ah, right…" He had already forgotten about that.

"Heh." Eve turned smug again when she noticed the slight hint of disappointment in his voice.

"Shush." Lydia, once more, did not appreciate that.

Once that topic was taken care of, the group finally returned to their initial plan of getting something to eat before continuing to explore the capital as well as people-watch.
