Chapter 214 – A wolf with experience

Maya, Ari, and Aura also met Kel, and while the two cats were a little wary of him, after all, a dragon is rather intimidating to relatively normal people, they all were okay with his presence, as well. Aura then tried to punish Fen for willfully risking his life, but as the male wolf made some compelling arguments in his defense, nothing ever came of it, and Sophia had Blu punish him instead for breaking her rules.

"That little parakeet has way too much power!" Fen lay sprawled out in a little crater roughly his size, with Blu sitting right in front of him while happily chirping at the wolf. "This gravity magic is way too much of a cheat."

"I agree!" Kel, right in front of the island, now with Steph and Anna on his head, also having been a victim of the bird, immediately agreed with him.

"No, Blu's perfect." Sophia, Maya, and Ari disagreed with them.

"Not surprised about you all siding against me." The male wolf sounded even more defeated.

"So, Kel, my dear, how about a little match?" Aura faced the dragon with an excited tone in her voice.

"Nuh-uh!" Steph, still on his head, denied her request. "I challenged him first!"

"She indeed did." Kel honored the first dibs rule. "I'm probably back at my full power, and once the dog had her go, probably around five minutes later, we can have a dance."

"HEY!" Steph stomped her foot on the ground, which was the dragon's head, to voice her dissatisfaction about being belittled. "I'll last longer than a mere five minutes!"

"Weird, last night you defended yourself by saying that lasting five minutes is a whole lot." There was a tiny hint of smugness in Chloe's voice when she made this reply out of nowhere.

"You're the best!" Hearing that, Maya simply started clapping.

"You're spending too much time with Maya!" The dog-girl didn't appreciate her girlfriend's remark. "Also, this and that are very different!" She then lightly glared at the fox.

"Well, it's been quite a while since I fought my last dragon, so a day more won't be a big deal."

"I'm looking forward to it. It's nice that there are so many people in this group who like a good fight." Kel was warming up to them. "From the sound of it, you seem to have experience in challenging dragons?" He got curious about her wording.

"A little, but I might've gotten a little rusty." The female wolf reacted with a slight nod. "I am Aurora, also known as the Dragonhunter of Igath, a title given by the Queen of the demons after I protected their capital from a dragon invasion. Then again, to be fair, they were a lot less impressive than you are. Though, they had numbers going for them."

"HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS PLOT POINT?!" Hearing that, Steph immediately got loud. "No one ever felt like telling me?!"

"It's not like you've ever asked me about my titles before? Neither this one, nor the various other ones." Even smugger, Aura winked at the dog-girl.

"That's not how that works!" It didn't make it any better for her. "Wait, what OTHER titles do you have?!"

"Wouldn't you like to know?"

"YES! YES, I WOULD!"

"This is also news to me." Sophia was a little calmer than her sister. "Like, you told us about having fought some dragons on the demon continent, but not to that extent!"

"I mean, I already was playing with dragons before I got to the capital there and did some more after I left, but I definitely had the most fun in Igath."

"Oho, I wasn't expecting to run into an expert here." Kel sounded impressed. "It's been quite a while since my last visit, but that continent is still a fun place, huh?"

"It's the best!" Aura reacted with a big nod. "The dragons there, at least the ones I met, weren't of the sapient type, though."

"I know some more fellow dragons on my level, but reaching the level of being capable of speech is a rare occurrence limited to the ones of high power, and often, age." Kel could understand her experience with the demon continent dragons. "It should be the same for you wolves, right?"

"Yes, the majority of our kind are regular wolves, as well." Aura agreed with him. "I hope you don't mind too much that I had a serious impact on the demon continent's dragon population."

"That definitely is a sentence." The dragon was taken aback for a moment. "Well, how'd you feel about a dead pack of regular wolves that got overconfident and picked the wrong fight?"

"Fair enough." She had nothing to say there.

"Although, while I had my doubts about Sophia's safeguards in this place, I'm starting to warm up to the fact that we can't die."

"Oh my, did I manage to intimidate you?" The smugness in Aura's voice returned.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"Absolutely not~." Kel's voice had the same tone to it. "I meant that I'll be able to show you what a real dragon is capable of."

"We're going to be such good friends."

"I look forward to it."

"I forgot that Aura might be the most ruthless and brutal in our group when I hoped for her to punish Fen for going too far during his playtime…" Sophia let out a short sigh.

"I NEED to hear more about your adventures on the demon continent!" Steph jumped off Kel's head and sat down in front of the female wolf after landing on the island.

"Wouldn't that take the fun out of exploring the place yourself?"

"Grrr!" The dog-girl didn't like being confronted with logic and sound arguments. "Fine, it would be fun to explore unspoiled!" She sounded rather unhappy still. "At least tell me more about your dragon hunter title, at least! That sounds sooo cool, and now that we know about that already, more details won't be spoiling too much!"

"Sure, I don't mind boasti-, I mean, explaining a little more in that regard."

"Let's go!"

"It's not that long of a story, though." Aura wasn't sure what to tell her exactly. "I was quite lost and confused when I arrived, so I traveled around aimlessly for quite a while after I recovered. One day, while exploring some volcano, fireballs suddenly started raining down on me, coming from a dragon circling above me. Naturally, I decided to give it some of its own medicine and lit the sky on fire."

"Naturally!" Steph nodded a few times.

"Naturally." Ari slightly shook her head instead.

"I didn't kill the dragon, though. After all, I had no idea if it wanted to say hello, play, or did indeed try to harm me. Then, a few days later, the fire dragon returned, bringing about five of its friends with it. Them attacking me all at the same time at full power, together with the killing intent I felt, made it rather clear that they didn't want to play. In response to that, I also stopped playing." Aura paused for a moment. "Soon after, it rained blood and dragon bits from the sky."

"I'm so happy I never made you angry!" The dog-girl's eyes grew wide.

"You could never~." Aura's voice turned playful in an instant. "Afterward, I don't know why, but similar things kept happening whenever I entered any remotely interesting area. Big cliffy area? I got attacked by air dragons. Lake area? Water dragons wanted a piece of me. Frozen tundra? Ice dragons are surprisingly hot-headed. So on and so forth."

"Dragons, especially wild ones like the ones that attacked you, can be a little territorial if you enter their place." Kel understood the reason why his fellow dragons attacked the wolf. "Even more so when the intruder is a powerful being."

"Ahh, that actually explains a lot." She hadn't thought about that before.

"What about the capital?!" Steph wanted to get to the main attraction of the plot. "How did it get invaded by dragons?"

"It's apparently a migratory thing that happens roughly every 50 years." Aura looked at her again. "Normally, they're supposed to just fly by, though. Maybe setting a nearby village or two on fire in the process, but that's about it from what I heard from the demons of the capital."

"Only, huh?" Ari wasn't sure how to feel about that.

"I mean, it's only about every fifty years, and you can see them coming from far away, so there's plenty of time for evacuations and extinguishing fires, meaning not much actually gets destroyed." The wolf didn't think it was much of an issue. "That time was different, though. According to the demons, they were much more aggressive and headed right for the capital for some reason."

"I wonder if it had anything to do with someone having messed up a whole lot of them prior to their migration." Sophia stared at the wolf.

"You can't prove that." She looked back at her.

"Mhm-hmm." The blonde reacted with a slight smile.

"Anyway, the capital wasn't in any danger because the demons have some fancy defense mechanisms like the thing they call barrier magic, which enveloped the whole place in a blue shield the dragons were unable to penetrate. Pretty cool stuff."

"Seriously?" Sophia couldn't believe it. "I've heard it a few times now that the demons are more advanced when it comes to magic, but they have working barriers? That's sooo much more skilled than the beastfolk! Sorry to say it so bluntly…" She took a quick glance at the beastfolk princess.

"…" Anna wasn't sure what to say.

"I really want to pick up the pace again now!" The blonde got excited over the revelation

"Yes!" Steph and Chloe felt the same. "Wait, how did you get the dragon slayer title if the capital was safe, then?" Steph still wanted to know more about the story.

"The shield only spanned over the capital itself and not its outskirts and the immediate villages around it that the dragons then focused their attention on."

"Ahhh." The dog-girl saw the issue.

"Demons are a lot stronger than the regular beastfolk, with the strongest of them reaching around the levels of the princess and Ari after Sophia boosted them." Aura then looked at the jaguar. "Would you take on a dragon? Even one way less than a tenth, maybe even a twentieth of Kel's size?"

"NO?!" She shook her head so violently that it almost looked like her neck would snap.

"Well, demons are a little gutsier, but they need quite a few to reliably take down a dragon. After all, if someone's twice as strong, it doesn't mean you could beat them with two people. You need quite a few more to bridge the gap."

"I still don't understand how any of that relates to your title?"

"I was feeding the demon army weakened and hurt dragons." Aura got to the point. "The smaller dragons I shot out of the air were dead before they hit the ground, while the bigger and more powerful ones got finished off by the army while I kept focusing on the sky, mostly using air cutters to clip their wings or directly cut them in half. Every now and then, I also simply used my magic to literally pull them out of the air by jumping at the dragons and using my fangs to rip out most of their throats mid-air." She paused for a moment. "Well, let's just say the outskirts of the capital were covered in red and bits for months. It took me almost a week to return to my original colors after the blood had stained my fur to such a level that it didn't want to wash out for so long."

"Hah." The girls all had the same reaction.

"Fun times!" The female wolf sounded a little nostalgic. "Anyway, once the raid was over, after about half of the dragons were killed, the others retreated, and things got cleaned up a bit, I was invited to the royal castle of Igath. There, the princess commended me for my impressive ruthlessness and awarded me with the dragon slayer title. I think they also gave me a house and made me an honorary nobility or something like that." As that wasn't something she cared about, Aura's memories of that were a little hazier. "A month later, a bigger dragon, around a third of Kel's size, also got close to the capital, and I intercepted it. Naturally, I easily beat that one as well, but during that fight, it managed to land a hit on me, which then caused the memories of my old life to return. Afterward, I immediately left the demon continent to find Fen."

Hearing all of that, the girls needed a bit of a break to let that story sink in, so Aura used that time to exchange some more jabs with the big dragon she was looking forward to having a bout with.
