Chapter 107: You Are Ready, Sir!
In the living room, Jason looked at Matthew and Edgar one by one, curious to learn more about the woman they had mentioned—Kinzley.
"Edgar, may I ask you something?" Jason said. When Edgar nodded, he smiled slightly and continued warmly, "Who is Kinzley? I don't think I've ever heard that woman's name before..."
Edgar was lost in thought before finally responding, "You don't know her... It's hard to explain anything about her existence to you."
Jason frowned slightly at Edgar's vague reply, and another question popped into his mind.
"Edgar, you mean... Kinzley is Noah's future fiancée?" he asked eagerly.
"Cough! Cough!" Matthew nearly choked on his drink at Jason's words. He couldn't believe this guy had just implied that Kinzley was Noah's fiancée.
"She is? Wow... Wow..." Jason looked thrilled at the idea. He narrowed his eyes toward Noah's control room and asked, "Why have I never heard about this from Noah?"
"Jason, you're wrong," Edgar said in a low tone, prompting Jason to shift his gaze back to him. "Kinzley is not Noah's fiancée..."
Edgar stood from his seat and politely excused himself before heading back to the sixty-ninth floor. He had no intention of gossiping about his master's son—especially not when an innocent comment might be taken too seriously.
Still, Jason wasn't convinced. He turned to Matthew, surprised to see him also preparing to leave.
"Matt... Where are you going?"
"Lunch," Matthew replied casually as he walked toward the door.
"Wait..." Jason stood up from his seat and ran after him. "Let me have lunch with you... I haven't eaten anything since last night."
"That's your problem, man..." Matthew shook his head, amused as he remembered how Jason had panicked and nearly punched him this morning.
Still, he couldn't blame him; Jason's loyalty to Noah was unmistakably genuine.
...
Meanwhile, in the control room, Noah was thrilled to hear Zoe's voice once more, at last.
He walked to the sofa and sat down, then immediately expressed his confusion about why Zoe had suddenly lost contact the night before.
'Sir, I forcefully cut off all communication because the young devil was sensing me. If his supreme leader knew about me, it would cause trouble for you...'
Noah was stunned; he hadn't expected an imp-level devil to be able to sense Zoe in his mind. "He could really do that?"
'Yes. He's actually not a young devil. It seems he's hiding his true level—or perhaps he has an artifact that alerts him to my presence. And when you got closer to him, I felt it too...'
"I'm glad you did that, Zoe."
'I did it to protect you,' a gentle laugh echoed through Noah's mind. 'My presence must remain hidden, or your life could be in danger. If the supreme devils are hunting you...'
Instantly, Noah felt a chill run through him, a rush of cold blood draining from his face as the weight of her words hit him. His true enemies were terrifying.
But something else, something even more electrifying, echoed louder in his mind now: Zoe's identity.
Who is Zoe, really? Why does her power feel so immense? How is her voice able to manifest inside his mind? And this voice—this presence—linked to his system, can grant him abilities that defy belief.
Absurd!
Noah knew that if he asked Zoe about the origin of his system or her father's past life, she would never give him an answer.
Still, he tried one more time. Maybe this is his lucky day, Zoe will answer her.
"Zoe, can you tell me, who are you...? And, can you appear before me? Please answer me, huh?"
And just as he'd predicted, Zoe didn't reply.
He could only laugh inwardly and lean back on the sofa, his eyes fixed on the ceiling above.
For a moment, Noah pondered, trying to distract himself from his primary goal of hunting down those devils before they came after him.
But even though he wanted to avoid the topic, those thoughts kept flooding his mind, swirling like a storm in his head. It unsettled him deeply.
Eventually, he couldn't hold it in any longer. His eyes snapped open again, and he asked, "Zoe, you know my power level is already at level six, right?"
'Yes, sir... Of course I know. Why do you ask?'
Noah swallowed hard, his throat suddenly dry. He expected to face another devil soon. He didn't want that, but if he ignored it, they'd come for him instead.
He let out a quiet sigh before finally sharing his concern with Zoe about Lucas Graham.
The truth was, he had no plan.
He once did, but that was before the fight with the young devil.
Before that, he had underestimated them, and that, he realized, was his greatest mistake. He believed that with the right weapon, he could easily take them down. But he was utterly wrong.
After being wounded by such a low-ranked devil, he had completely abandoned his plan.
'Well, sir, I can tell you can handle him. But you need to buy the weapon at your weapon shop, sir. No need to be frightened.'
Noah was speechless.
Last night, Zoe had suddenly vanished, and he'd been forced to fight alone.
If that happened again while facing Lucas Graham, he'd be in grave danger. Lucas Graham wouldn't hesitate to kill him first.
'Sir, if you're worried we'll lose contact, forget it. I won't disappear again. I promise. Lucas Graham isn't an informant kind of devil, but he's a fighter. And with your current power, you can defeat him. Easily.'
"Really?"
'Yes!'
Hearing how firm Zoe sounded, Noah's confidence began to return.
But he wouldn't rush to face his enemy now. He needed rest, just as his doctor had advised.
He also needed to relax, especially with the media frenzy surrounding the Black Roses Gangsters in Opal City. Their story had exploded across local and national news.
But that rest didn't last long.
...
Because a few days after his fight with the young devil, just as the noise about the Black Roses was beginning to fade... Noah was hit with something unexpected.
He received a call.
This time, it wasn't from an enemy. It was from his grandmother.
After all these months, this was only the third time she had ever called him.
He stared at his cell phone until it went dark.
Noah hadn't thought about the Morgans lately. He didn't know what had happened in the family because his entire focus had shifted toward fighting supernatural threats, rather than handling family matters.
"What else do they want from me?" Noah sighed deeply. Just thinking about them already exhausted him.
"Did something happen, Noah?" Matthew asked, worried to see Noah's expression suddenly darken.
Noah looked away from his phone and then at Matthew. He was tired of hearing about Jared Morgan's divorce battle with his wife.
And if his grandmother was calling again to ask for help, he didn't even bother answering the phone.
"Is there anything else happening with the Morgan family besides Uncle Jared's issue with Lucas Graham?"
Matthew was slightly taken aback by Noah's question.
"I heard Alexander Morgan is dealing with some health issues. He was even taken to the hospital a few days ago. Well, sir, there's some news about him online… I assumed you'd already seen it."
Noah was mildly surprised to hear that, but then a thought crossed his mind.
"Is the news legit? Or is it just a distraction from the main battle between Jared and his wife?" Noah asked.
He'd only known the Morgans for a few months, but that was more than enough. He already saw how terrible they were, willing to use anything to get what they wanted, never showing an ounce of sincerity.
"Would you like me to check that?" Matthew offered.
"Yes, please…"
"I'll head back to my office and update you once I have more information," Matthew replied, then excused himself, leaving Noah alone in the penthouse.
...
A few minutes after Matthew had left him alone, Noah's cell phone rang again.
It was his grandmother.
This time, he didn't ignore her; he answered immediately.
"Oh my God, Noah… you finally picked up. I'm sorry if I'm bothering you..." Isabel Reid's guilty voice came through on the other end.
A faint smile formed on Noah's lips, as if he were speaking to her face-to-face.
"No, Grandma, you're not bothering me. I was in a meeting earlier and just now checked my phone. I was about to call you back."
Noah feels a surge of guilt for lying to her.
"What's wrong, Grandma? Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Noah… I'm not sure if you've seen the news lately...?"
"What news?" Noah asked with a hint of curiosity, even as a familiar uneasy feeling filled his heart, knowing he had to hide the truth from her.
"Oh, Noah… your grandpa is having health issues." Isabel Reid's voice trembled, as if she were on the verge of tears.
Once again, Noah had to fake a shocked reaction. And of course, he couldn't refuse when Isabel Reid asked him to visit his grandfather.
