Chapter 26: Who’s the Real Dog
‘Can’t drag this out any longer.’
The scar-faced brute gathered the magical power within his body at his feet, shattering the ground beneath him, and charged toward Lin Yu with a speed as swift as lightning.
‘Think you can run?’ Chen Beiwu’s hand seal shifted.
Sensing the fluctuations in the surrounding spiritual energy of heaven and earth, the brute’s face twisted into a vicious grin as he abruptly crushed the tiger seal hanging at his waist.
“Roar!”
A thunderous tiger’s roar that shattered clouds and winds erupted, the tangible soundwaves tore through the mist in the dense forest at a visible speed, revealing the figures of Chen Beiwu and Iron Egg.
“Die for me!”
Seizing the moment of pause, a surge of crimson blood qi erupted around the brute as he charged toward Chen Beiwu with immense might.
Chen Beiwu did not retreat. His hand seals flickered rapidly.
The reason he had lurked in hiding for several minutes before acting was not to watch some live lewd play, but to complete the setup of a formation.
“Tidal Formation, rise.” Chen Beiwu stepped into the Kan Water Position, initiating the Tidal Formation.
The original name of the Tidal Formation was Mist-Gathering Tide Formation. This formation could borrow the rising and falling momentum of river tides to gather the water-attribute spiritual energy in the world, temporarily boosting the combat strength of water-type Companion Beasts. It was considered a non-grade formation.
Due to its extremely short duration of boost—only three seconds—the formation instructor at Shouhe No. 2 High School once jokingly called it the “humidifier formation” during class, suggesting it might be useful at home during dry seasons. But Chen Beiwu did not see it that way.
Every formation in the world had its use—it all depended on how the caster employed it.
Using the Mist-Gathering Tide Formation solely to enhance a Companion Beast’s strength was indeed unimpressive. However, if used to amplify the explosive power of a single water-type spell, the resulting effect would be drastically different.
To verify this theory, Chen Beiwu had spent several days modifying the Mist-Gathering Tide Formation into the Tidal Formation.
“Tidal * Instant Slash!”
Chen Beiwu pulled out a Water Blade Talisman. As he infused it with magical power to activate the talisman, he simultaneously channeled all the formation’s energy into amplifying the talisman’s strength.
“Whoosh!”
“Whoosh!”
“Whoosh!”
Countless strands of azure water threads, as thin as hair, rose into the air. These threads wove into a net, which, in the blink of an eye, condensed into a peerlessly sharp water blade, slicing everything in its path cleanly in half.
‘This power... can’t be blocked!’
Watching helplessly as the soaring water blade split his shield artifact and protective talisman, terror filled the brute’s eyes.
“Impossible! We’re clearly at the same cultivation level!”
As a line of blood appeared, the brute’s life came to an end. His body was abruptly cleaved in two and fell to the ground.
Perhaps due to dying too quickly, his eyes remained filled with unwillingness and confusion.
‘There’s something off about this spell’s power.’ Chen Beiwu’s expression flickered slightly.
He wasn’t sure if it was due to the added spiritual energy of this realm, but the power of his spells here was unbelievably potent—capable of instantly killing even a cultivator at the Seventh Level of Qi Refining.
Seeing this horrifying scene, Lin Yu froze in place, a hint of regret emerging in her heart.
How could this be?
It wasn’t as though she had never ambushed late-stage Qi Refining cultivators before.
Under normal circumstances, even if Zhong Shan at the Seventh Level of Qi Refining couldn’t win, he should’ve been able to hold on for dozens of breaths using talismans and artifacts.
And she only needed four breaths to conceal her aura and activate the power of the Soul-Piercing Nail to deliver a sneak attack.
When facing lustful cultivators with a hero complex, trying to save the damsel in distress, she could even use her beauty to silently complete her assassination.
It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that at least five cultivators in the late Qi Refining stage had died by her hand.
But in a head-on fight, she couldn’t even defeat Tong Yu at the Sixth Level of Qi Refining, let alone Zhong Shan at the Seventh Level.
“&…@.” (Please spare my life, senior.) Lin Yu tossed away her hairpin artifact and pressed her forehead to the ground.
To be safe, Chen Beiwu flicked his finger, and two water threads shot out, easily severing Lin Yu’s arms.
As blood gushed out, her body trembled, and she rammed her head against the ground, hiding the venom in her eyes.
“Woof.”
Iron Egg growled softly, standing guard in front of Chen Beiwu.
“Hand over all the spirit stones, artifacts, and talismans on you.” Chen Beiwu communicated through divine sense.
Hearing this, Lin Yu did not hesitate to bite through her inner garment and retrieve a storage pouch hidden in her chest.
Chen Beiwu said, “Bring theirs over too.”
Lin Yu circulated her magical power to stop the bleeding and barely managed to stand. Using her foot, she retrieved a storage pouch from Tong Yu’s crotch and another from the sole of Zhong Shan’s shoe.
“Very good.” Chen Beiwu looked at her calmly. “Do you want to live?”
Lin Yu immediately nodded, a flash of surprise in her eyes.
She had thought she was doomed—never imagined there was still a chance at life.
“Please spare me, senior,” she said mentally.
A jade slip suddenly fell in front of Lin Yu.
“Use your divine sense to record your language and writing system in this jade slip. If the information is detailed enough, I won’t kill you.”
Lin Yu paused in surprise.
She had imagined many possibilities—maybe Chen Beiwu was mute, perhaps due to his cultivation method, and could only communicate via divine sense.
But she never imagined the other party was illiterate.
Unbelievable. An illiterate couldn’t possibly be from one of the Five Great Sects. Could he be a cultivator from beyond this region?
“Is there a problem?” Chen Beiwu’s eyes sharpened.
“Woof woof!” Iron Egg barked twice in warning.
Lin Yu hurriedly knelt and pressed her forehead to the jade slip.
Only after a long while did she cautiously raise her head.
“Senior, it’s done.”
Chen Beiwu crouched down and picked up the jade slip, skimming through it under Lin Yu’s hopeful gaze.
“You may leave.”
Upon hearing that, Lin Yu finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She had survived!
She had thought she was surely going to die today and had even prepared to perform a blood sacrifice with the Soul-Piercing Nail to trade life for life.
She carefully stepped forward a few paces. Seeing that Chen Beiwu wasn’t following, she quickly picked up her pace.
Watching the silhouette about to disappear into the distance, Chen Beiwu glanced at Iron Egg.
Iron Egg understood, stomped its paws on the ground, and spewed fire.
After a week of cultivation, though it hadn’t successfully learned Blazing Flame Convergence, it had managed to comprehend its own offensive spell from it.
“Boom!”
With a loud explosion, a fierce and imposing Fiery Hound suddenly blocked Lin Yu’s path.
“You lied!” Her pupils shrank, and she regretted everything instantly.
Damn it! She never should have trusted an enemy’s promise.
“Soul-Sealing Technique!”
At the critical moment, Lin Yu spat out blood and summoned the long-prepared Soul-Piercing Nail, shattering the Fiery Hound blocking her way in a single strike. But she couldn’t stop the wall of flames cutting off her retreat from behind.
“Boom!”
Gazing at the billowing smoke in the distance, Chen Beiwu rubbed Iron Egg’s dog head and sighed, “I told you not to kill her, yet you went and did it anyway. You blockhead really deserve punishment.”
Upon hearing this, Iron Egg widened its doggy eyes. For a moment, it didn’t know who the real dog was.
It sprang up and barked furiously—judging by the look, it was cursing hard.
“All right then, since Phantom Rat Wolf meat is poisonous, your punishment is to eat a big chunk of it.”
As soon as Chen Beiwu said this, Iron Egg’s barking instantly stopped.
If eating exotic beast meat was the punishment, then taking the blame didn’t seem that bad after all.
“A big meaty bone with it.”
“Woof woof woof!”
Iron Egg bared its teeth in a huge grin and leapt high into the air.
That’s right—it was the killer!
No one had to give the order.
