Chapter 244: A very worried mother.
The moment they were released from decontamination, people swarmed forward like bees on some kind of mission.
Word had already started to spread that they had gone beyond the wall to tackle mutated beetles. Someone had added the words cannibalistic, so everyone was calling them the cannibalistic bees.
Embraces and relief continued to flow like a flood among family members and friends but not for the billionaires.
They finally found Sheldon who was being helped to the medic bay. As soon as they noticed his missing hand, questions poured like hail.
"What happened?"
"How the hell did this happen?"
They swarmed him, their panic louder than the rest of the crowd.
"We need to get him to medic bay now." A doctor told them.
They heard him and yet continued to crowd Sheldon who was wailing like a baby now that he was safe again and about to undergo the first surgery of his life. He was afraid that he was going to die on the table.
Jon asked one of his men. "Who the hell did this to him."
The man let out a loud sigh. Where they supposed to be truthful and just say Sheldon brought it on himself? He had been told to put his phone away and yet he pulled it out again. Karma had done it to him.
One of the mercenaries that worked for Jon replied, "The watchers sir."
"The what? Watchers?" Someone nearby hissed.
Others paid more attention to the billionaire's, interested in hearing what had happened.
The man nodded. "The one they call Pink, to be specific."
Lisha and Elio had spread the name around...mostly Lisha. People were beginning to call the watcher Pink.
"Hades that bastard!" Jin grumbled in a low tone. "If he did not insist that Sheldon go with the team, this would not have happened to him."
They rushed after their friend, worry etched on their faces. Jon was already reaching out to his wife to share with Sheldon's family and have them hurry to Fortress Four if they were not afraid to leave the base.
Lisha shook her head as Sheldon was wheeled away, having heard the true story behind the missing hand already. She gave all her focus to Sunshine, her face lighting up when she saw no sign of wincing or bandages. She threw her arms around her, clinging with joy.
"My Suni, you cannot take on night missions anymore. I have not eaten since you left." She cried out.
"You smell like roasted almonds, chocolate and marshmallows." Sunshine told her.
Lisha gulped. "I stress eat. Why did you decide on a night mission? I was so scared that something would go wrong, especially when the watchers took off and...."
Sunshine zoned out, her eyes continued to search the crowd before she cut off Lisha's babbling. "Where is he Lisha?"
"By him I guess that you mean my cousin Hades. Am right?" Lisha took a step back. Her expression shifted, joy fading into something else that looked like unease. "He is at the medic bay."
Sunshine's brows furrowed, Hades was fine when she left so what had happened in the short time while she was away?
"Medic bay?"
Lisha nodded. "Yes, it's not a big deal. It is Cass...he has a fever."
Sunshine's heart slammed in her ribs, her baby got sick, yet she was not around to comfort him! How many times had he cried for her? To a small extent she felt like a terrible mother, guilt began to envelope her.
Her body moved before her mind could think. She shoved her way through the crowd, ignoring the medics calling for her attention and Warren's attempt at a debrief. She sprinted frantically, searching for the closest car.
"Suni," Nimo called, pulling up as Sunshine stopped a random patrol vehicle. "I knew you would panic as soon as you heard the news about your son. Come with me, I have been waiting for your return."
She climbed into the car. In silence, Nimo sped off to the first wall, driving like they had a mission inside the base.
The car jolted to a stop outside the medic bay. Sunshine leapt out before Nimo could even shift the gears into park. Her boots hammered the floor as she rushed inside.
She ignored the quiet chaos of the medic bay around her like nurses moving swiftly, monitors beeping softly, children crying in curtained off corners.
And there he was. Hades stood by the reception desk of the VIP ward, near nurse Kendall who was explaining something to him. His face was drawn with worry.
When nurse Kendall noticed Sunshine, she called her name, Hades turned. His breath hitched.
"Suni." His voice cracked, relief flooding through it like a dam breaking.
He closed the space between them in seconds, wrapping her in his arms. His body trembled against hers. "Thank God you are back; I was really worried."
She buried her face against his chest, inhaling his scent. "Castiel" she breathed, voice breaking. "Where is Castiel?"
Nurse Kendall's calm voice cut through their embrace. "It is just a fever. It was high but we managed to bring it down. Since the cold began it's been going around with no end in sight."
Hades cupped Sunshine's face, his eyes brushing past her eyes that were weary. "White has it too but I think that it's because he's still adjusting to our climate. Dr. Soraya assured me that he will be fine."
Sunshine nodded, but her legs were already moving. Hades took her to Castiel's room.
The first sight of him made her heart clench. He looked so small in the big bed. He lay bundled in blankets, cheeks flushed pink with fever. His little chest rose and fell steadily, though his forehead gleamed with sweat. At the sight of her, his eyes widened.
"Mommy!" His voice was hoarse but filled with joy.
Sunshine sat on his bed, wrapping her arms around him, pressing lips to his warm forehead. "My baby," she whispered, tears sliding down her cheeks. "Mommy is here now."
Castiel pulled back, wrinkling his nose. "You stink mommy!"
Sunshine laughed, wet and broken. "I just finished doing a stinking job."
Ariel appeared in the corner; his young eyes filled with understanding. He had not mentioned it to Hades, but he overheard the soldiers preparing for the mission and knew where Sunshine was coming from.
His gaze lingered for too long on her. "Mom, have you been working outside?"
Sunshine's heart skipped, nothing passed Ariel. She met his eyes candied without hesitation. "No, I was repairing something on the base in the...." She whispered to him, "secret tunnel."
Ariel hummed, suspicion flickering but he said nothing more.
"Mommy?" Earl walked in with a tray in his hands; it only had a thermometer on it. "I am on duty tonight. I will watch Cass like I have been doing." He paused and wrinkled his nose. "You smell like a fart mommy, no hugs for me."
Everyone laughed, Sunshine stroked Castiel's mildly damp hair and kissed his forehead again. Now that she had seen him, she needed to take a bath because decontamination had not washed away the stink, just killed any parasites on her body.
"I will be back shortly." She said as she stood.
"Do not forget to check on white mom. He was not too happy to be in the hospital without you. He is ignoring all of us now." Ariel reminded her as she left the room.
Warren entered the room. Hades and Sunshine stepped out. As they walked, she told him about the fight, not forgetting to talk about Sheldon.
"That fool, I regret pushing him to go, he could have put your lives in danger! They are more useless and bothersome than helpful. Maybe we should just cut them off."
