Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 98: The Tower

"No, there's no one else."

The person who had been speaking continued to answer, "It's just the two of us here, and we didn't come here willingly; that guy forced us.

"We had no choice but to come to deal with him to ensure everyone else's safety..."

Lu Xi'an certainly couldn't fully trust what these two people were saying, even after they came out and he closely observed them to confirm they truly surrendered with hands raised without any danger.

He whispered to the mechanical dog, "Gou, let the drone continue searching."

Gou was on the car roof, held by Yao Wei, but could still hear Lu Xi'an's instructions.

So, the drone already inside the building ignored the two people, and under Gou's control, began to fly around inside the building, checking room by room.

Lu Xi'an patiently waited until the drone flew out, and Yao Wei said from the car roof, "There's no one inside."

He got off the car, took out a rope from the backpack in the rear, and tossed it towards the two people, saying, "One of you tie the other up."

The two hesitated but eventually exchanged a glance, made up their minds, and the one who was speaking picked up the rope to tie the other.

Throughout the tying process, Lu Xi'an kept a close eye, sensing something was wrong, and offered his opinion:

"Not tight enough, tie it again."

"Pass it under the armpits."

"There too."

"Not here."

"Use strength, tighten it."

...

Finally, under his guidance, one of them tightly tied up the other, and the one tied couldn't stand due to the tightness, falling to the ground.

Only then did Lu Xi'an feel slightly relieved, called over the remaining person, tied him with another rope, and then went to look at the car roof.

He saw Yao Wei standing high on the roof, holding a bow and arrow, foot stepping on a head, looking cold and majestic.

No wonder the two people who came out of the building were scared.

Lu Xi'an asked the two people again, "Is there anyone in the tower?"

Though he was asking two people, he was actually asking the one in front.

Among the two, the one who had been speaking was this one being tied, the distant one seemed not adept at speaking and never opened his mouth.

The one answering his question was indeed this one.

Tightly tied and unable to stand, leaning against the car, this person answered, "No, no one at all. It's too dangerous in there, even that Neo-Human doesn't want to stay inside.

"We just found the Fungus Stone inside beforehand... You should know this thing, right?"

Lu Xi'an coldly laughed and said, "Try testing me again, I'll kill you and ask your companion instead."

Finally daunted, the person didn't dare test Lu Xi'an, laughing awkwardly, continued, "I dare not, I dare not. I really didn't mean anything else, just thought if you didn't know, I'd explain it to you."

He was so ingratiating that he stopped saying "you" and started using the respectful form, "In any case, that person had always stayed in this building and only went to get the Fungus Stone, never went to the tower again."

Lu Xi'an asked, "What about the Resonant Gene Scanner?"

The person was slightly surprised, not expecting Lu Xi'an to know even this: "That Resonance Instrument has always been in the building, it's still there now, believe it or not, you can go see."

But Lu Xi'an didn't hurry to see it, instead asking, "What's in the tower? Why is it dangerous?"

The person said, "There's nothing, it's empty inside. It goes very deep down and very high up, not many places for people to stand."

Lu Xi'an had Gou control the drone to fly to the transmission tower.

The transmission tower had a solid structure and the walls were covered with sturdy bricks and rocks, making it seem as if even if Lu Xi'an went there and kicked the wall with full force, there would be no reaction.

There was only one iron gate at the base of the wall, looking strong but significantly mismatched with the massive tower body, even smaller than the door of the adjacent building, only wide enough for two people to enter side by side.

The small door was already open, weather and years of human damage had robbed it of its intended function.

The drone went in and came out, Lu Xi'an looked up, Gou's eyes didn't flash, confirming the person's statement was correct.

Both people tied were periodically looking at Gou on the car roof and then at the drone in the sky, with looks of amazement.

The person in front of Lu Xi'an even flattered, "Impressive! Really impressive! These two things, that person doesn't have, plus a car, a gun!

"Truly impressive, no wonder you were able to kill him! Compared to you, that person is nothing at all!"

Lu Xi'an was unimpressed and walked to the side of the tower, poking his head through the door to look.

The guy wasn't lying, inside was indeed as he said, the hollow top was very far away, and the deep pit below was pitch-black, seemingly bottomless.

There were only a few narrow walking paths along the edges of the internal tower wall, one at the entrance level, a few higher up, and some seemed to be lower, all connected by ladders.

The railings that originally should have been on the paths were now all corroded away, with almost all places only having the bases embedded into the platforms left.

In some places, the railings were still intact but looked fragile, making one reluctant to touch them for fear they might break, causing a fall into the deep pit.

No wonder the person said it was dangerous.

Lu Xi'an turned around, asked, "Where did you find that Fungus Stone?"

The person inadvertently displayed a "I knew you'd ask" expression and answered, "Right inside the tower, underneath. You need to climb down two levels of ladders.

"The stone's just lying there, those who first found it have died down there.

"He touched the stone and his body rotted, painful to the point he couldn't escape, even when we went down to save him, it was of no use. We later covered the stone up and brought it back."

Lu Xi'an nodded, withdrew from the door, and first asked Gou, "Is there anything underneath the tower?"

Gou's eyes flashed twice, indicating nothing was found.

Then Lu Xi'an pointed to the head stepped by Yao Wei on the car roof and asked the tied person, "What about that person? Did he enter the tower?"

The person said, "He initially intended to, but after knowing the Fungus Stone was not inside, he didn't go in. He heard the Fungus Stone was taken by others and punished us severely..."

Saying this, he seemed to remember something extremely painful, his eyelids twitched wildly, face pale: "We felt extreme pain for no reason, even wishing for death.

"Quite a few people couldn't resist self-harm. It was too painful! It's remarkable how you managed to kill him!"

Lu Xi'an: "..."

It seems that Neo-Human was indeed an expert at executing punishment, but why hadn't he used such methods on him and Yao Wei previously?
