Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 73: Falsehood and Reality

Lu Xi'an drove the car off the road again, finding a spot to park.

"Oh, how does the weather change so quickly in Mengxin? At this rate, how long will it take to get to the next city?"

He sighed as he parked the car, turning around to connect the air conditioner's power to Gou, noticing that the rear window was already covered in snow.

The air conditioner blew warm air, and he returned to the front seat, seeing the view cleared by the windshield wipers.

In the view through the windows, the ground outside looked like an improved version of British cuisine — Stargazy Pie; the white snow was the pie, with grass sticking out like sardines refusing to die peacefully.

"We should be close. Once the weather clears and the snow melts, we just need to head south."

Yao Wei spoke as she talked to Lu Xi'an, opening the door to step outside to set the windshield wipers upright in front of the car.

This would prevent the wipers from freezing if the snow got too heavy.

"Crunch, crunch—"

Yao Wei's footsteps outside made the sound of snow being compacted underneath.

A lot of snow indeed.

After fixing the wipers, Yao Wei returned to the car, closing the door with a "thud."

In the short time she was out, a layer of thin snowflakes had already accumulated on the windshield, echoing the Stargazy Pie outside.

"How long do you think this snow will last?"

Lu Xi'an asked.

Yao Wei replied, "I hope not too long."

Seeing the snow for a while is fine, but after some time, it becomes boring and monotonous.

Stuck in such an environment with nothing to do, it really wears down one's spirit.

Lu Xi'an pulled out the radio, thinking that if he'd known, he wouldn't have left the computer behind.

He turned on the radio, hearing the "buzz" of static, confirming there was no signal here.

"What are you turning that on for?"

Yao Wei asked, seeing Lu Xi'an's action, feeling a bit confused.

Lu Xi'an said, "Just something to do. It's boring doing nothing, maybe there's a signal."

Yao Wei remained puzzled, "But isn't it just the same few lines repeated over and over?"

She made a fair point, but Lu Xi'an stubbornly said, "What if there's a different channel? Like one playing music, or telling midnight ghost stories or something."

Yao Wei looked at Lu Xi'an curiously, not quite getting it.

Lu Xi'an sighed, saying, "Alright, perhaps I'm just daydreaming. In times like these, who would waste precious resources and energy on these radio stations?"

The snow continued to fall, sealing the car's windows completely in a layer of snow, rendering the windows black with snow in layers.

It wasn't time to sleep yet, but with nothing to do, they could only recline their seats, lying down and pulling up blankets.

Lu Xi'an noticed that Yao Wei's eyes were wide open, staring at the car's ceiling.

She seemed deep in thought, lost somewhere.

"What are you thinking about?"

Lu Xi'an asked.

Yao Wei answered, "Thinking about the videos and songs from before on the computer."

She wasn't referring to the initial video, but the movies that followed.

In such a situation, they were a pretty good pastime.

But for Lu Xi'an, those film stories felt somewhat mundane.

While watching shows at the gas station, Lu Xi'an felt melancholy, pondering why the world he traveled to had to be post-apocalyptic.

If not, compared to the shows and songs played on the computer, launching a career as a plagiarist wouldn't be an issue at all.

Lu Xi'an thought of something and said, "How about I tell you some stories?"

Yao Wei nodded, saying, "Sure."

She seemed completely trusting that Lu Xi'an could share stories.

In her impression, Lu Xi'an had accumulated an unbelievable amount of useless knowledge.

And so, Lu Xi'an began, starting with "Legend of the Condor Heroes." It was a classic.

But Yao Wei seemed to have some difficulty understanding, frequently interrupting Lu Xi'an, questioning things like what Martial Arts were, how the Eighteen Dragon Subduing Palms were used, and if they were Neo-Humans too.

—Lu Xi'an didn't follow the original narrative pace, so the content progressed quickly.

When he got to the meeting of Guo Jing and Huang Rong, she furrowed her brows in dissatisfaction, saying, "Such a waste…"

Referring to Huang Rong ordering a feast with Guo Jing playing the big spender.

Thus, Yao Wei developed an aversion to "Legend of the Condor Heroes."

Lu Xi'an had to switch stories, telling "The Return of the Condor Heroes," "Sword Stained with Royal Blood," "Wind and Cloud," "Chor Lau Heung," and even modern ones like "Infernal Affairs" and "Under One Person," but he still couldn't satisfy Yao Wei.

Yao Wei always found questions she couldn't comprehend, interrupting Lu Xi'an.

When he was interrupted again, Lu Xi'an sighed, saying, "Forget it, these stories are too distant for you. I'll tell you one you might find easier to grasp."

"What?"

Yao Wei asked curiously. She actually thought Lu Xi'an was pretty impressive, having so many stories in his mind.

Lu Xi'an said, "This story is called—Global Icebound, I'm the Only One Prepared, Building a Safehouse!"

After that…

Yao Wei: "I can't understand, how does he do all that alone?"

Lu Xi'an: "There's a system."

Yao Wei: "But where in the world is there a system?"

Lu Xi'an: "It's imaginary, for some fun, just for some fake joy."

Yao Wei: "But how can fake things make people happy?"

Lu Xi'an: "…"

He racked his brains for a moment, saying, "Think of Gou, just imagine the system as an enhanced version of Gou."

Yao Wei glanced at Gou serving as a power bank in the back, somewhat getting it: "Oh…"

Yet, she still couldn't get into the story: "Gou can't do it, so how could that system do it?"

Lu Xi'an: "…"

He completely gave up on telling stories to Yao Wei. This Neo-Human woman was great at fighting and playing with toy guns but utterly lacked imagination.

"Forget it, I won't tell any more stories, let's just watch the car roof."

He lay back down, looking up at the roof.

"Mm."

Yao Wei responded and lay back down too, looking at the roof.

Rather obediently…

Lu Xi'an sighed softly.

Yao Wei heard Lu Xi'an's sigh and surprisingly said, "Sorry."

Lu Xi'an curiously asked, "Why are you apologizing?"

Yao Wei said, "I don't understand your stories…"

Lu Xi'an chuckled and said, "It's okay if you don't understand, no problem."

"Mm."

Yao Wei responded again.

They continued to look at the car roof again.

As they watched, Lu Xi'an suddenly thought that this wasn't so bad, staying here with someone didn't necessarily mean they had to do something to pass the time.

When he traveled alone before, he hadn't thought of storytelling.

Having someone by his side, watching the car roof together, someone to face danger with and alleviate the pressure, what more could he want?

"Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch…"

A dull heavy sound suddenly entered their ears, the sound of snow outside the car.

The two quickly sat up from their seats, exchanging glances.

The crisis pressure was coming!
