Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 72: Security and the Girl

"Our fire went out too early."

As they started the car and prepared to step on the gas, Lu Xi'an said.

Yao Wei pulled out a gun, nodded, and said, "Mm."

In Lu Xi'an's memory, wolves were afraid of fire.

Lu Xi'an didn't know if the mutated wolf pack in this world had the same weakness; he just said it offhandedly.

But Yao Wei nodded, indicating agreement.

Did it seem like Yao Wei had encountered such wolves before?

Yao Wei released the safety on her pistol, her expression serious, making Lu Xi'an feel a bit wary. It seemed that even in Yao Wei's eyes, who was a sharpshooter, this wolf pack wasn't easy to handle.

Lu Xi'an started the car, stepped hard on the gas, but wolves had already leaped onto the vehicle, tearing at the wire mesh with their jaws.

There was even a wolf that rushed to the front, throwing itself headfirst at the windshield. After being knocked off, it flipped over and pounced again.

"This won't work."

Yao Wei opened the car door, reached her arm out, but didn't fire; she just grabbed the wolf by the neck, strangled it to death, and flung it away.

This is really violent!

But Lu Xi'an thought it was great; it saved bullets, was effective, and gave a sense of security.

"They'll break the window at this rate. I'll get on the roof, you drive."

As Yao Wei spoke, she was already standing up, gripping the door frame, extending out of the car, and fired two "bang bang" shots ahead.

Her aim remained terrifyingly accurate, killing the wolves still trying to ram the car with just two bullets.

Lu Xi'an immediately floored the gas, the wheels bumping over wolf carcasses.

Meanwhile, Yao Wei had flipped herself onto the car roof, running to the left and back side of the car, as usual, not using any bullets, but knocking all the wolves off the wire mesh barehanded.

The wolves were clinging to the car, gnawing at the wire mesh, unable to evade flexibly, and couldn't cooperate to attack, instead giving Yao Wei the chance to strike.

Yao Wei strangled each wolf with seamless efficiency, flinging them away.

Then she crouched on the car roof, all muscles tense, avoiding being flung off by Lu Xi'an's sudden acceleration.

Yet, with the car fully powered, the remaining wolves couldn't keep up, gradually being left behind.

Yao Wei observed from the roof for a while, confirmed that the wolf pack had been left far behind, then sighed with relief and said to Lu Xi'an, "Open the door for me."

— When she had climbed onto the roof, she had closed the door to allow Lu Xi'an to accelerate. Now wanting to return, she had to rely on Lu Xi'an.

Lu Xi'an didn't stop the car; he twisted at the waist while stepping on the gas, releasing the steering wheel for a moment, and opened the passenger door.

Thanks to being a Neo-Human, performing such high-difficulty maneuvers, he would've never managed this in the past.

"These wolves seem even fiercer than hyenas."

After Yao Wei sat back, Lu Xi'an remarked.

"Mm."

Yao Wei nodded, also feeling this wolf pack was a few degrees more formidable than hyenas.

They were larger, and even faster. Yet their bite force seemed weaker than that of hyenas.

Earlier at the villa, in that short time, hyenas had already torn through the villa door, but the wire mesh remained intact.

"Thanks to your great shooting. Had your aim been poorer, who knows, we might've been trapped by the wolves."

Lu Xi'an praised.

Yao Wei said, "And thanks to your excellent driving, we weren't surrounded by wolves."

Both of them exchanged a look and simultaneously laughed.

Luckily they had met, able to cooperate and trust each other.

Having such a comrade beside you, someone to confidently entrust your back to, was truly quite wonderful.

As they continued forward, turning around a corner heading south, they suddenly found the wolf pack reappearing ahead, blocking both the road and beyond.

The remaining wolves, about twenty or so, lined up, stretching from the road to the forest edge on one side and the riverbank on the other, leaving no gap for Yao Wei's car to pass through.

The wolves were eager to attack, seemingly ready to pounce on the car at any moment.

They had obviously cut through the jungle, taking a shortcut.

Lu Xi'an gritted his teeth and said, "How about you shoot two, and I'll floor it, see if we can charge through like before?"

He wasn't planning to stop. Braking would only get them surrounded.

"Okay."

Yao Wei decided swiftly, opened the car door, stood sideways, and aimed her gun.

Lu Xi'an, holding firm trust in Yao Wei, shifted gears and sped up, flooring the gas pedal.

"Roar!!!!"

The engine roared intensely, propelling the car forward rapidly.

But just then, across the river suddenly came a howl, yet it didn't sound like a wolf, but rather a girl imitating a wolf's cry.

"Bang!"

Yao Wei fired a shot but surprisingly missed.

It turned out the wolves flinched at the sound, suddenly darting aside as if startled.

Yao Wei misjudged the wolf's trajectory, causing the bullet to hit empty space.

Whether it was that howl that commanded them, or it frightened them, the wolf pack abruptly retreated.

The car sped past, and a belated arrow struck the vehicle, snapping into two.

Lu Xi'an glanced at the rear-view mirror, seeing a girl draped in tattered clothes and holding a bow and arrow on the opposite bank. Her hair was yellowish, her face lined with blood vessels, extremely coarse, her gaze cold and observing the car.

The wolf pack, seemingly commanded by the girl, retreated and disappeared into the jungle.

Yao Wei didn't return inside, keeping her gun aimed at the girl, but didn't shoot.

And Lu Xi'an's foot remained on the gas pedal. He kept looking ahead while continuously glancing at the rear-view mirror until the girl disappeared from sight, then slightly relaxed.

Yao Wei finally returned inside, closing the car door.

Lu Xi'an asked, "That girl, was she controlling the wolf pack? Do you think she could also be a Neo-Human? Wonder what model she is..."

But Yao Wei shook her head and said, "No. Neo-Humans don't look like that hair or face. She doesn't seem like she was controlling the wolves.

"I saw her firing arrows at the wolves. They ran away, scared of her voice."

Lu Xi'an was amazed, "How did she manage that? It was tough for us to handle the wolf pack, yet she scared them off alone."

Yao Wei just shook her head and said, "We had concerns, like protecting the car. As for that girl... well... she's indeed quite formidable."

After careful assessment, Yao Wei had to admire her too.

After this ordeal, both were eager to drive forward, leaving Mengxin City to completely escape the wolf pack and the girl.

— Regardless of whether the wolf pack and the girl were together or not.

But unexpectedly, Mengxin City's cold fronts were so frequent. Not long into their journey, the weather suddenly turned cold again.

And this time, the cold front brought a blizzard.
