Chapter 108: You Made It! I Made It?!
The rest area on the hillside road was covered with gravel, but now because of the rampant growth of weeds, those stones are already out of sight and only felt when car wheels roll over them.
The layout of the parking area was very simple, with only a vast space, which now seems to have become a haven for weeds.
This was once a parking area.
Outside the parking area, there was a small house, already collapsed.
Lu Xi'an walked over for a glance. It was once an old-era toilet; it seemed unnecessary to explore again. They could only solve their problems outside of the toilet.
Outside the parking area was a cliff, and the sunset had fallen, dusk was settling in.
This night, the moonlight was clear. Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei stood by the cliff, watching the mountain forest fall into the abyss, leaving only a dark silhouette. They rested for quite a while.
"Going from the grassland to the deep mountains does feel different, doesn't it?"
Lu Xi'an sighed.
Yao Wei merely nodded and said, "Hmm."
Lu Xi'an didn't speak further, just quietly listened to the wind and watched the moonlight.
He looked up at the sky and suddenly felt something was wrong—up there, under the faint glow of moonlight, he felt a strange pressure as if something was hovering beyond the sky, ready to fall at any moment.
Yet, he clearly saw nothing.
"Did you feel it?"
He frowned and asked Yao Wei.
Yao Wei turned to look at him, puzzled, "What?"
"Up there,"
Lu Xi'an said, "It feels like there's a big lid in the sky ready to come down at any moment."
Yao Wei followed Lu Xi'an's gaze toward the sky but couldn't see anything. She thought for a moment and said, "It might be because of the sky's color..."
"Hmm..."
Lu Xi'an examined the sky carefully but found nothing unusual, "Maybe I mistook the moon for a pot lid and the sky for a pot..."
"Pfft..."
Yao Wei couldn't help but chuckle.
Lu Xi'an withdrew his gaze from the sky and glanced at Yao Wei, "What?"
"Nothing..."
Yao Wei quickly stifled her laughter, "Just thinking it's amusing to imagine the sky as a pot lid."
Lu Xi'an looked deeply at Yao Wei, "You know, you look quite nice when you smile. Don't always keep a stern face."
"Oh."
Suddenly, Yao Wei seemed a bit at a loss, wanting to obediently smile, but it seemed she forgot how and couldn't do it.
Lu Xi'an thought to himself he'd have to tell Yao Wei more jokes in the future, otherwise, her cold expression might really turn into a poker face over time.
Or perhaps, due to long-term lack of expressions, Yao Wei already showed signs of a poker face, which he needed to correct.
The two stood for a while longer, stretched their bodies, ate a little, and then went back to the car to sleep.
The food was still the wolf meat hanging outside.
This meat, after being smoked and roasted, would keep for several days without any problem for them.
And to avoid difficulty finding food in Jianshan City, they hadn't indulged in eating and drinking before heading into the mountains, only maintaining a minimal intake.
Thus, quite a bit of wolf meat was still left.
Chai Xin was still sleeping in the car; seeing her sleeping soundly, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei refrained from waking her.
But while eating, Lu Xi'an suddenly thought to try the radio here, so he quietly went to the car to get it.
When fetching it, Chai Xin suddenly looked up, drowsily glanced at Lu Xi'an, and mumbled, "Another good thing..." before closing her eyes again, hugging the Fungus Stone, and curling up to continue sleeping.
Lu Xi'an, holding the radio, couldn't help but look back at the car several times.
"What's wrong?"
Yao Wei asked.
Lu Xi'an replied, "Chai Xin woke up for a moment and then went back to sleep. Seeing her like this, I feel she really might be evolving."
Yao Wei said, "That's great!"
Lu Xi'an glanced at Yao Wei and smiled, "Yeah, that's great."
Lu Xi'an turned on the radio, and the two ate meat while listening, but there was no signal here, only a crackling static sound coming from the radio.
"Looks like nothing can be heard here,"
After finishing, Lu Xi'an clapped his hands, turned off the radio, and said, "Let's get back in the car to sleep."
"Hmm."
Yao Wei nodded.
The two got into the car and lay down, both glancing back involuntarily to see Chai Xin curling up, sleeping peacefully.
There was nothing more to say through the night.
The next day, as Lu Xi'an had hoped, no snow fell, so the roads wouldn't be slippery, and they could continue their journey.
When Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei woke up, they happened to see Chai Xin waking too.
She opened her eyes and, seeing both Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei awake, sighed in relief and said, "So comfortable!"
But what she met were Lu Xi'an's and Yao Wei's slightly surprised looks.
"What's the matter?"
She asked while following their gaze to look down at her own body.
One look, and she was stunned.
For some reason, her body appeared shadowy, sometimes solid, sometimes as if about to disappear.
"Ah!!!!"
Frightened, she jumped up, hit her head on the car roof, but surprisingly didn't feel much pain. Her body felt much more agile, with a bit more strength than before.
The space in the back was really small; she quickly curled up again and asked shakily, "What's happening to me?!"
Lu Xi'an just laughed and said, "You've made it."
"I've made it?!"
Chai Xin stared blankly at Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei, not quite understanding.
And Lu Xi'an wasn't in a hurry to answer her, going first to pick up the Fungus Stone she dropped when she jumped up and put it away.
After doing this, Lu Xi'an turned to Yao Wei and said, "From today on, you are Neo-Humans."
"I... am… Neo-Humans?!"
Chai Xin shrank back, stunned. The answer was shocking to her, as she felt like her brain was about to overload, "But... how did I become a Neo-Humans?!"
Lu Xi'an laughed, "Don't worry about how you became a Neo-Humans. Look at yourself now, do you look like an ordinary person?
"You are a Type D Neo-Humans, if I'm not mistaken, you should be able to mask yourself so others can't see you.
"But don't think about using that power on us to steal our things. We both have a strong sense; you might evade our eyes but not our senses."
"Ah?!"
Chai Xin was dumbfounded, unable to believe it.
While Yao Wei looked at Chai Xin, somewhat envious.
She thought about how great it would be to have such an ability herself, where others couldn't see her, making her much safer.
Lu Xi'an opened the car door and asked, "Want to go out and try it?"
"Oh."
Chai Xin agreed and quickly got out of the car.
She didn't try her ability immediately after getting out but tried to straighten her back.
Yet she failed.
Touching her hair, it was still so dry; just a feel could tell it was entirely different from Lu Xi'an's or Yao Wei's.
"Aren't I Neo-Humans? Why am I still like this?!"
She sighed, a bit dejected.
