Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 107: Entering the Mountains

After finishing the exploration of Grassland County, the three continued their journey southward, traveling for about half a day, they saw towering mountains from afar.

This majestic mountain range felt completely different from the eastern Yubei City.

When looking towards Yubei City from Mengxin City in the east, Lu Xi'an indeed felt a sense of looking up at mountains from lower ground, but it was far less awe-inspiring than now.

His car was moving along a straight highway, intuitively sensing an enormous barrier ahead that seemed to pierce the sky.

From a distance, the grayish-blue cliffs appeared marked with unpredictable vertical lines, resembling countless giant swords stuck to the cliff face reaching for the heavens.

The road from north to south disappeared into the mountains, seeming to be cut off by the giant swords.

"Wow!"

Chai Xin, on top of the car, couldn't help but exclaim in awe at the magnificent scene before them.

Though Lu Xi'an inside the car didn't utter a sound, he was inwardly amazed as well.

"Is this Sword Mountain?"

Lu Xi'an said, thinking that it was no wonder it was named Sword Mountain, it was so grand and towering, he wondered what spectacular sights might be on the mountain?

He suddenly grew a bit expectant.

"Yes."

Yao Wei nodded, took out "World Map One," opened it and pointed, saying, "It's called Sword Mountain."

Lu Xi'an asked, "When you came out from the mountain initially, were you shocked by this mountain?"

"No..."

Yao Wei said calmly, "At that time, wasn't in the mood to look, didn't pay attention."

Thus, Lu Xi'an didn't ask what Yao Wei went through back then traveling from south to north, he could somewhat imagine.

Back then, Yao Wei was probably bitterly lonely while he was in another world, holding books in hand, sitting at a desk, looking at the blackboard.

"And now?"

He asked.

Yao Wei quietly looked ahead for a while and answered, "Uh-huh."

Lu Xi'an smiled and said nothing.

They continued driving forward for a while until the majestic mountains gradually faded from sight.

But of course, it wasn't the mountains disappearing, rather the road ahead began to slope upward, and they were now engulfed by these towering "giant swords."

As they drove further, Chai Xin suddenly asked, "Can I come down? I'll try to shrink back, won't affect your driving." The voice was apprehensive, sounding terribly anxious.

It turned out a tunnel appeared ahead, pitch black, making one's heart feel uneasy.

No wonder Chai Xin said so.

Lu Xi'an stopped the car, opened the door, and got out, saying, "Come in and try."

Due to lots of stuff placed in the rear seat, there was no way for Chai Xin to enter from the rear door; hence Lu Xi'an needed to open the front door, get out, and make room for Chai Xin to get in.

So, Chai Xin jumped down from the top, first said, "Thank you," to Lu Xi'an and then climbed inside.

These past few days, every night she hugged the Fungus Stone to sleep, gradually evolving towards becoming a Type D Neo-Human, yet her body hadn't grown at all, still hunched and small.

But thanks to this fact, coupled with her gradually improving body control, she indeed managed to shrink further, making her way back without hindering Lu Xi'an while driving.

Lu Xi'an returned to the driver's seat, closed the door, and asked Yao Wei, "Were things fine on your previous visit here?"

Yao Wei replied, "Things were fine coming here. But be cautious, if the road is blocked, you'll have to retreat and find another path."

"Alright."

Lu Xi'an nodded, "Let's play it by ear."

Turned on the lights, shifted gears, and stepped on the gas.

Inside the tunnel, the road couldn't allow Lu Xi'an to turn off the lights and feel his way in darkness.

He was driving slowly, progressing cautiously in the tunnel. Fortunately, as he moved along, he reached a point where the path was unobstructed, until light appeared ahead.

Emerging from the tunnel into brightness, the sudden light spilling onto the car window was a bit dazzling, prompting Yao Wei and Chai Xin in the back to shut their eyes, and Lu Xi'an had to squint his eyes as well.

"Should've asked Luo Ping for a pair of sunglasses."

Lu Xi'an remarked.

Luckily, he was a Type A Neo-Human, his body always recuperating quickly, just a brief moment and his eyes returned to normal, adjusting to the environment.

Yao Wei didn't know what sunglasses Lu Xi'an mentioned were but could guess based on recalling, asking, "The one worn by Luo Ping on his eyes?"

Lu Xi'an said, "Yes."

Yao Wei said, "Find one when there's a chance. If we meet Luo Ping again, ask him for it."

This seemed like a promise to herself...

Lu Xi'an laughed, saying, "Hope there'll be a chance. However, Luo Ping is in the east, we're heading south, not along the way, afraid we might not meet him?"

Yao Wei replied, "Don't know? But that guy said he's always out looking for people, doing transactions, maybe running towards southwest, might come across us."

"True..."

Lu Xi'an nodded, not harboring much hope internally.

Luo Ping seemed to have mentioned that he'd already visited many places southward and was disappointed, hence heading north. The road ahead is long and uncertain whether it's a path Luo Ping once traversed?

Moreover, if Luo Ping had only one pair of sunglasses, he probably wouldn't give them up easily?

This Sharp Brother is not that Sharp Brother, without sunglasses, something seemed amiss.

Having crossed one tunnel, there soon appeared another, and Lu Xi'an continued cautiously driving.

Chai Xin in the back seat remained wide-eyed, earnestly observing the scenery outside the grasslands, never having seen anything like this, now everywhere they went felt novel.

After exiting the tunnel, they didn't encounter another one. Chai Xin then said, "I'll get back on top of the car?"

Lu Xi'an said, "Jianshan City has many mountains, we'll keep traversing, might have more tunnels ahead."

Chai Xin said, "I shouldn't be afraid anymore."

Lu Xi'an said, "If you can manage in the back without feeling uncomfortable, no need to go on top, just do what's comfortable."

"Oh."

Chai Xin shrank her neck, said no more.

With the wind outside being strong, compared to being on top of the car, she'd certainly prefer the inside. Being curled up like this, she was long accustomed, why would she feel uncomfortable?

Just as she curled herself up and remained still, Lu Xi'an suddenly tossed something over from the front console, saying, "Here, keep hugging."

Chai Xin was momentarily stunned; it was a stone wrapped in wolf skin, very comfortable to hug while sleeping, and even when not sleeping, it felt soothing.

"Thank you."

Seeing that Yao Wei didn't object, she grinned, accepted the stone, tucked it into her arms, feeling its warmth, thinking these two were really nice, never before meeting such good people.

Thus, after traveling for another half day, crossing two tunnels, Chai Xin unknowingly fell asleep.

At nightfall, when they stopped at an abandoned parking area by the roadside, Lu Xi'an parked the car, turned back to glance at Chai Xin, who was still asleep. Yao Wei called her, yet couldn't wake her up.

"Feels like evolving soon?"

Lu Xi'an chuckled.

"Don't know. I've never seen evolution."

Yao Wei replied as such.

Lu Xi'an: "..."
