Chapter 115- At What Cost? (Final Chap 5/5: 3 in 1 Chap)
Seo-joon looked at Jin-woo and said weakly.
"Just go, I'm not gonna live long enough to reach a hospital. That bastard destroyed one of my kidneys."
Jin-woo stared at Seo-joon, and for some reason, tears couldn't help but form in his eyes.
Seeing this, Seo-joon was visibly taken aback, but he soon chuckled and said.
"Are you actually crying because your bully is dying? Honestly, I thought you would ditch me as soon as I said you should leave me behind. Help me up."
After saying that Seo-joon grunted as he tried to sit up.
Jin-woo wiped away his tears and went forward to help prop Seo-joon against the wall.
Suddenly, the footsteps down the hall behind the staircase increased and soon, one zombie after another appeared in front of Jin-woo and Seo-joon.
However, they ran past them not realizing they were there. However, they didn't leave and instead lingered along the corridor, some either falling through the window or frantically slamming into the walls.
"Fuck."
Seo-joon cursed under his breath as he and Jin-woo watched this scene.
"Hey, before you go, reach into my right pocket."
Seo-joon said turning to Jin-woo.
Jin-woo silently reached into Seo-joon's right jacket pocket. He found a broken cigarette and a lighter.
"Shit, it's broken. Well, I'll take what I can get. Light it for me."
Holding the cigarette and lighter in his hand, Jin-woo frowned and said.
"Smoking is bad for you."
Seo-joon stared at Jin-woo in mute silence while an expression of disbelief formed on his face.
Shaking his head he said.
"Just let me die in a cool way, like in one of those movies, alright?"
Jin-woo hesitated but eventually placed the cigarette between Seo-joon's lips and lit it.
Seo-joon drew in breath, and then with a trembling hand took the cigarette from his lips and exhaled the smoke. Afterward, he said.
"You can leave now, go on."
Jin-woo looked at Seo-joon, and then at his own hands covered in blood.
Right now, he felt a sense of heaviness in his heart he couldn't explain. The person dying in front of him was his bully, someone who tormented him out of jealousy.
However, if Jin-woo said he was completely indifferent to Seo-joon dying, he would be lying.
Jin-woo soon found himself thinking back to his first two years of middle school where Seong and Seo-joon were together with him.
However, now Seong was gone, and Seo-joon was dying right in front of him.
Tears appeared at the corner of Jin-woo's eyes and fell down.
"Why aren't you asking about my ability?"
Jin-woo suddenly asked and Seo-joon responded by shaking his head.
"I'm dying anyway, so what if I know the truth now? Just go."
The zombies screeching echoed out in the hallway. The sound of gunshots behind the metal doors and the helicopter blades also filled Jin-woo's ears.
However, he didn't focus on them. He instead clenched his fists and closed his eyes.
"What are you doing? Do you want to die here with me?"
Seo-joon asked, but Jin-woo didn't answer, he only muttered under his breath.
"Seong, Seo-joon wants to see you. Please, come ba-"
"Jin!"
Before Jin-woo could finish his sentence, he heard a voice that made his eyes snap open. He hurriedly turned to look to his right to see Seong and immediately became excited. However, that excitement evaporated when he saw Seong staring woodenly at Seo-joon.
"Jin, what happened?"
Seong turned to look at Jin-woo, tears already in his eyes.
However, before Jin-woo could answer, the cigarette in Seo-joon's mouth fell onto his lap. His eyes were wide open as he stared directly at Seong. Then, his mouth parted slightly as he called out in a trembling voice filled with disbelief.
"Seong?"
Both Seong and Jin-woo turned to look at Seo-joon in shock.
"You-You can see me?"
Seong asked, pointing at his nose.
Seo-joon nodded mutely but then let out a small laugh. However, his laugh suddenly turned into a cough, and he had to cover his mouth so the zombies couldn't hear him. But on his third cough, he coughed out a mouth full of blood, which seeped through his fingers.
Seong and Jin-woo's expression changed.
They immediately realized why Seo-joon could see Seong.
It was because he was about to die.
"I-You're wearing the same clothes."
Seo-joon said; his voice now a bit hoarse.
Seong moved to his side as he responded.
"Yeah, my soul stays the same when I die."
Seo-joon turned to Jin-woo.
"Were you always able to see him?"
Jin-woo nodded, but his heart slowly sank as he saw Seo-joon's pale face turning slightly red.
Seo-joon slowly turned back to look at Seong, the one regret he felt after Seong died appeared in his mind and his bloody lips cracked into a smile as he muttered.
"Sorry about kissing you in the library… You just wouldn't shut up about this freak…"
After saying that, Seo-joon's eyes slowly closed before his head slumped to the side.
Seong bit his lip, and tears rolled down his cheek.
However, he suddenly turned to look at Jin-woo.
Jin-woo knew what he wanted, but after a moment of concentration, he shook his head and said.
"I can't sense his soul. Maybe I overused my ability too much, or maybe it's somehow different for you. I'm sorry, Seong."
Seong's eyes dimmed slightly, but he soon wiped his cheeks and with an embarrassed expression, he said.
"Let's pretend that his last words were his question to you."
Jin-woo paused, and despite the current situation, he couldn't help but become slightly amused. He recalled Seo-joon had mentioned something about Seong slapping him at the library in Gangnam.
"Jin, who did this?"
Jin-woo snapped out of his thoughts and turned to look at Seong, whose expression had turned cold.
Jin-woo's eyes narrowed before he picked up his phone, as well as his and Seo-joon's gun from the ground.
"It was Ye-jun. Don't worry, he's as good as dead."
The sound of the helicopter blades had already become deafening, while the sound of gunshots on the roof seemed to increase.
Jin-woo gripped the gun in his hand and pushed the metal door open before stepping through it with Seong.
The total number of minutes that passed while he was here with a dying Seo-joon didn't add up to six minutes.
….
After Ye-jun and Mai-sun appeared on the roof, Han Soo yelled at them while firing his gun.
"Hurry and get to the helicopter, I'll hold them off!"
Han Soo had his back to the two, so he didn't realize the figures he glimpsed weren't Jin-woo and Seo-joon. But perhaps even if he was staring at them, it would take a while to register their faces due to the darkness on the roof.
Ye-jun ignored Han Soo and holding Mai-sun's hand he led her to the helipad where Jeon-sok and Ah-yong were.
Kai was firing at the zombies some distance away with his back to the door and helipad, so he didn't see Ye-jun and Mai-sun as well.
However, Ah-yong and Jeon-sok were nervously crouched near the helipad staring at the door wondering why Jin-woo and Seo-joon were taking so long. Seeing the door open and two figures rushing towards them, they wanted to breathe sighs of relief, but when the appearance of the two became clearer, their expression quickly became dumbfounded when they realized it was Ye-jun and Mai-sun.
"Bastard!"
Jeon-sok immediately jumped up from his position and barked at Ye-jun and Mai-sun as they approached. He wanted to attack them but stopped because he saw Ye-jun holding a bloody knife.
Ah-yong stood up as well, her expression filled with anger as she glared at the two. She was just about to ask about Jin-woo and Seo-joon, but the helicopter finally arrived overhead, the loud sound of its blade interrupting her and causing their clothes to flap wildly.
As the helicopter lowered onto the helipad, a bright light from it shone onto the roof before two soldiers began firing at the zombies.
This relieved Han Soo and Kai of the pressure allowing them to slowly make their way to the helipad.
Soon, the helicopter lowered and the two men firing jumped out.
"Go! Go! Go!"
One of them yelled as he approached Jeon-sok and began pulling him towards the helicopter.
"Wait, sir! My friend is still in the school!"
Jeon-sok hurriedly yelled back.
"Kid don't waste time, just go, we'll handle it!"
This soldier then grabbed Ah-yong and pulled her towards the helicopter as well. Ye-jun and Mai quickly followed.
After putting the four kids onto the helicopter, one of the men yelled at Kai and Han Soo.
"Let's go!"
Han Soo and Kai fired a couple more shots at the zombie horde before turning and rushing to the helicopter.
They had been firing bullets intermittently for several minutes and even changed magazines several times, but even now the zombies' number still surpassed fifty. Adding the nearly thirty or so zombies they had killed meant this horde hidden on the roof reached nearly a hundred.
Judging by the school clothes the zombies wore; it could be deduced that at least two classes had survived and made it to the roof but were wiped out after having nowhere to go.
Kai gave one final look at the school glad to finally escape from this place. However, after he was helped onto the helipad by his brother while the two soldiers fired at the zombies below them, he climbed into the helicopter and looked around.
"What the-"
"Kai Jin-woo isn't here! Hurry, go back and help him!"
Jeon-sok immediately yelled when he saw Kai.
Kai hearing this had his face twisted into a grotesque expression as he glared at Ye-jun and Mai-sun. Han Soo's expression also became ugly.
Kai didn't say a word and was about to jump out of the helicopter, which was already lifting into the air, however, before he could, a figure was seen pushing the door of the roof open.
"JIN!!"
Jeon-sok yelled excitedly when he saw Jin-woo, while Ah-yong with tears at the corner of her eyes also sighed in relief.
However, their expressions change when one of the zombies broke from the horde surrounding the helicopter to attack him.
Unperturbed by the zombie's approach, Jin-woo raised his gun and fired, headshotting the zombie in one go.
For some reason, after Seong appeared, his abilities had recovered somewhat.
With auto aim on, he walked forward and emptied his gun; each bullet hitting a zombie that approached.
Jin-woo then threw away his empty gun and grabbed Seo-joon's from his waist, but as he pulled the trigger to kill another zombie rushing toward him, a click was heard as the gun was empty.
Jin-woo glanced at the gun with a frown, before he tossed it away as well. He dodged the zombie's lunge before sprinting towards the helipad.
Under Kai and the others' rain of bullets, the zombies around him fell one by one, while the ones who survived and rushed at him were easily dodged.
In only a few seconds, Jin-woo made it to the helipad and was pulled up by Kai, who asked.
"What happened? Where is that other kid?"
Jin-woo didn't answer, instead both he and Seong glanced at Ye-jun sitting comfortably next to Mai-sun in the helicopter.
Kai followed his gaze, and he couldn't help but furrow his brows.
"Kid, who taught you how to shoot? Come on, get in."
One of the soldiers said, as he pulled Jin-woo into the helicopter.
Kai got in after him, followed by the other soldier after he fired one last round at the zombies.
The helicopter then began to rise into the air. Its blade was loud as it slowly drifted from the school building into the air.
On the football pitch, zombies in the hundreds congregated, reaching up and screeching at the helicopter in the sky above. From afar, even more zombies were rushing into the school, drawn over by the helicopter noise.
However, despite the noise outside, inside the helicopter was completely silent.
Jin-woo was standing while holding onto a handle on the roof of the helicopter with his right hand, his gaze lowered as he calmly looked at Ye-jun.
Ye-jun calmly stared back at him, and the two remained like that for a few seconds.
Jeon-sok and Ah-yong were also glaring at Ye-jun, while Kai and Han Soo were frowning at him.
The other two soldiers didn't know what was going on, but sensing the tense atmosphere, they realized something was wrong.
As the tension was reaching its peak, Jin-woo went to grab the revolver tucked in the back of Kai's waist, who was standing next to him.
Unlike last time, Kai didn't move to stop Jin-woo.
However, before Jin-woo could grab the revolver, Seong's figure in the helicopter suddenly vanished.
"Jin!"
Taken aback, he turned to see Seong standing on the roof of the west wing after hearing his shout.
"Seong, what…"
Jin-woo was at first confused, but his expression suddenly changed dramatically as he realized something.
"Jin, I can't… I can't teleport to you!"
Seong yelled again. His body was constantly flickering in and out as he tried to teleport back onto the helicopter but couldn't. He looked up at Jin-woo in the helicopter, his expression filled with reluctance and sadness. However, somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew something like this was going to happen.
Jin-woo stared at Seong on the roof, he too had known.
Seong had only ever appeared when he was at school.
But Jin-woo had hoped that perhaps it was because Seo-joon had Seong's journal at school. But now hope was squashed.
For some reason, Seong was bound to the school and couldn't leave with him.
Jin-woo touched Seong's journal in his left pocket, wondering if he could somehow bind Seong's soul to it.
However, as these thoughts appeared in Jin-woo's mind, unbeknownst to him, Mai-sun glanced at his left hand that grabbed at his pocket.
Eyes narrowing, she abruptly pointed at Jin-woo's left hand and yelled with a horror-stricken expression.
"You've been bitten!"
Jin-woo snapped out of his thoughts because of this and turned to glare at her. However, the soldier sitting beside Jeon-sok and Ah-yong on the other seats, glanced at Jin-woo's hand to see it was indeed bleeding.
"He's been bitten!"
The soldier yelled and hurriedly pointed his gun at Jin-woo.
"No wait!"
Kai yelled and immediately stepped in front of the gun blocking Jin-woo with his body.
"What are you doing get out of the way!"
"Wait! I said wait! Let me explain!"
"Move!!"
The soldier began to panic thinking Jin-woo could turn into a zombie at any moment and jeopardize their safety.
Jin-woo frowned and raised his left hand. Along with the blood on it, a clear bite mark was visible.
The other soldier was hesitating, but he saw the bite mark and immediately became frightened. Without hesitation, he pointed his gun at Jin-woo and fired. However, Han Soo, who was sitting on the ground, was quick to react and knock the gun to the side allowing the bullet to slip past Jin-woo's ears, taking off a chunk of it along a few strands of hair.
While Kai and Han Soo were trying to calm down the soldiers and explain that Jin-woo was their target, Ye-jun suddenly sprang up from his seat and shoved Jin-woo.
Jin-woo, who was clutching his bleeding ear, was unable to react and was shoved out of the helicopter.
However, he managed to hurriedly grab Ye-jun's hand in time.
Ye-jun was pulled outside with Jin-woo but he quickly grabbed onto the side of the helicopter.
Seeing this, Ah-yong and Jeon-sok cried out in alarm.
Kai heard their screams and looked over to see Jin-woo hanging outside the helicopter.
"Bastard! Don't you dare let him go!"
Kai forgot about the soldier and dived towards Ye-jun.
However, it was too late.
As the loud sound of the helicopter blades echoed out, Ye-jun glanced at the zombie horde on the football pitch below before looking at Jin-woo.
With a slight smile, he said.
"You'll finally be able to see Seong again. Tell him, I said goodbye."
With that, Yejun shrugged off Jin-woo's grip.
"JIN!"
"JIN!"
"JIN!"
"JIN!"
"JIN"
The only thing Jin-woo could hear as he fell was his name being shouted at by multiple people at once.
Seong.
Ah-yong.
Jeon-sok.
Kai.
Han Soo.
But for some reason, along with those voices, he swore he could faintly hear a voice that sounded like Seo-joon. Perhaps he was just imagining things because he thought he heard his father's and mother's voices as well.
Jin-woo tried to listen closer, but the voices were soon drowned out by the loud blades of the helicopter.
As he fell, Jin-woo's hate-filled gaze left Ye-jun's face and turned to the loud blades of the helicopter. Even though it was night, there was no moon in the sky.
However, the stars were particularly clear.
Jin-woo looked at the starry night sky through the blades of the helicopter and felt the weightlessness of his body.
His mind couldn't help but recall the vision he had after he met Micah, but a realization suddenly dawned on him.
Did his future vision leave him because he was about to die?
In the helicopter, Kai looked out just as Jin-woo's body was swallowed up by the zombie horde on the football pitch.
"Damn it! Fucking Idiot! Do you have any idea what you've just done?!"
Kai roared as he turned and grabbed Ye-jun's collar.
Despite Kai's rage, Ye-jun remained composed as he said.
"What? He was bitten."
He went to fix his glasses on his nose but realized they were long gone.
Kai stared at Ye-jun's face for a moment then suddenly shoved him back and released a laugh. Though the laugh sounded strange.
Ye-jun quickly held onto the handle on the roof to steady himself.
"Kid, even if he were bitten, he wouldn't have turned. You just killed the only guaranteed hope of us creating a cure for this virus."
Han Soo explained for his brother, who was too busy laughing off to the side.
When the other soldiers heard that, their faces behind their masks changed dramatically.
"Fuck! That was the kid we were meant to save?!"
One of them yelled, his voice filled with horror and disbelief.
Jeon-sok and Ah-yong upon hearing Han Soo's words were also stunned. While Ye-jun's calm face finally changed; his brows coming together into a frown.
"What do you mean? I don't understand."
Ye-jun cast a glance at Mai-sun, only to see that her expression was extraordinarily calm as she stared back at him.
For some reason, Ye-jun's heart chilled when he saw her calm expression. But that feeling only intensified when Mai-sun's expression suddenly changed as she pointed at him and yelled.
"You've been bitten!"
It was almost like deja vu for everyone, while for Ye-jun, it felt like he was living in some alternate reality where he had somehow switched places with Jin-woo.
However, when he lifted his left hand and looked at it, he shockingly realized it was covered in blood while a clear bite mark was visible.
"N-No wait… This-This doesn't make sense… I-I wasn't bitten!"
Ye-jun was shocked and tried to explain that something was wrong, however, unlike Jin-woo's situation, no one stood in front of him.
Kai pulled out his revolver from his waist and directly shot him.
The bullet went right between Ye-jun's eyebrows, and his body stiffened for a moment before he fell backward. His body landed on the side of the helicopter with a sickening thud, before falling outside.
Kai's face was expressionless as he threw his baby to the ground and covered his face.
Even though he killed that bastard... but at what cost?
Ah-yong and Jeon-sok were feeling a complex of emotions as they stared at their high school campus in the distance.
Mai-sun only glanced at it briefly before turning away.
One of the other soldiers decided to report back that they failed to secure the target.
The helicopter carrying everyone flew over Itaewon and grew further away from Itaewon Stars High. Most of the zombies followed it, but the number that remained wandering around the school was still in the thousands.
In the middle of the football pitch, where zombies slowly walked about, a mutilated corpse was seen on the ground.
Suddenly, Seong's figure appeared next to it and knelt down. He grabbed the rags that were left on the figure's body and wept uncontrollably while calling out Jin-woo's name.
However, no matter how loudly he called, the mutilated body that was completely unrecognizable from Jin-woo didn't respond.
….
…
..
Standing on the roof of the auditorium, an indistinct figure that seemed to merge with the darkness stared at the football pitch for a moment before they turned and headed to Yoon-min's limp body leaning against the ledge.
The figure knelt to Yoon-min and patted his forehead.
After that pat, Yoon-min's eyelids suddenly fluttered for a moment before fully opening.
He turned to look around and immediately saw the figure next to him and was stunned.
"You-"
Before Yoon-min could say anything the figure suddenly disappeared.
Yoon-min, even more shocked by this, quickly scrambled up and looked around the roof, but saw no one.
….
At the tennis courts, the indistinctive figure phased through the locked fenced gate and walked over to where the motionless Ho-jin was.
Soo-ha, who had long since been turned into a zombie, seemed to sense something and like a frightened animal retreated away from the indistinct figure and curled up into a ball in a far corner of the court.
Her demeanor was akin to a small puppy suddenly being approached by a tiger. Even her body was visibly shaking from fear.
The indistinct figure, however, ignored Soo-ha and instead crouched next to Ho-jin and patted his forehead like they did Yoon-min.
Ho-jin's eyelids fluttered and then fully opened. He looked around and soon saw the indistinct figure. Immediately, his expression changed to one of anger, but before he could say anything the figure vanished.
Similarly to Yoon-min, Ho-jin was shocked by this and immediately scrambled up to look around.
Suddenly, he felt the sensation of something pulling him in a certain direction. He paused, and after glancing at Soo-ha in the corner with a sad expression, he turned and followed where he sensed this Calling coming from.
Yoon-min, who was sitting on the ledge of the roof looking up at the sky, also felt something calling him.
A smile broke out on his face as he glanced at the football pitch in front of him before directly jumping from the roof.
From the two estimations, the Calling they were sensing… was coming from the football pitch.
….
…
..
On Hannam Bridge, just before reaching the left turn-off to enter Gangnam District, a semi-truck was parked awfully close to the guard rail.
At normal times, such parking would be illegal, however, the traffic on Hannam Bridge was a complete mess, with numerous cars abandoned. This resulted in those dutifully waiting for traffic to clear up having no choice but to do the same.
The water truck driven by the two drivers could only park there with nowhere to go.
Said two drivers were currently at the back of the truck, waiting while leaning against the railing overlooking the Han River.
Soon, footsteps echoed out in the night and a figure appeared in front of them.
As the two drivers looked over at the newcomer, Driver Two said annoyed.
"What took you so long?"
The newcomer was wearing a slick black suit that seemed to be custom-designed to fit perfectly on his somewhat slim frame. A black mask covered his mouth, and it made his voice sound muffled as he replied.
"You suddenly changed the meeting location from where we originally agreed to, and worse it's in a place like this. Is it unreasonable that I was late after being forced to walk all the way here?"
Driver Two still showed an annoyed expression as the man approached but he couldn't retort to his words.
Driver One waved his hand dismissively and said.
"It couldn't be helped due to the circumstances. Just check the goods and give us a price."
"Sure."
The man in the suit said as he wiped the sweat off his face with a napkin before walking over to the truck.
Due to it being nighttime and the light from the nearby streetlights being dim, the full extent of how much his clothes were soaking with sweat wasn't visible. It was a testament to how far he had walked to get here.
After reaching the back of the truck, the man in black loosened the valve and allowed water to slowly drip into his hand. He then shifted his mask slightly and tasted it.
The two drivers glanced at each other, their expressions becoming strange as they thought he was only going to check for the water, not taste it.
After tasting the water, the man in black used the napkin to wipe his hand and mouth before turning around. When he saw the expressions on the two drivers' faces, he shook his head and said.
"If you think just any water is good enough to sell then you're wrong. Its quality is important, making it no different from selling wine."
Driver Two immediately rolled his eyes and said derisively.
"Are you going to turn this water into wine like Jesus or something? It's just water, who cares what it tastes like? Just bottle it up and sell it to some small stores for a profit, why overcomplicate things?"
The man in black gave Driver Two a dismissive glance as he said.
"This is why you're the one in charge of moving the supply for the boss and I'm the one selling it. Dumbass."
"What did you say?"
Driver Two got angry and reached for his gun tucked in his waist, but he was stopped by Driver One.
"Stop and think about where you are right not. If a gun goes off we'll be surrounded by the military in less than a minute."
Driver Two glared at the man in black but soon released his grip on his gun and turned away with a snort.
Driver One looked at the man in black and asked.
"You've checked, so what's the price?"
The man in black thought for a moment, before opening his mouth to answer, however, he suddenly felt dizzy. He became unsteady on his feet and stumbled backward. He tried to use the truck as support, but his hand accidentally hit the water valve latch, causing the water inside to start trickling out onto the ground.
"What happened?"
Driver One said surprised, and he approached the man in black.
"No-Nothing, I'm fine. It's just-"
The man in black couldn't finish his words, as his body suddenly became slack, and like a puppet that had its strings cut, he fell to the ground.
"Fuck, what happened to him?"
Even Driver Two couldn't help but curse and hurry over.
"Shit, I don't know. He's unconscious. Let's help him up and get him to a hospital, quick!"
Driver One said, as he and Driver Two picked up the man in black and rushed through the abandoned cars to get help.
However, in their haste, they forgot to address the loose water valve on the truck.
As the water trickled out of the truck, it slowly started to form a stream.
Not long after, this stream began flowing towards the edge of the bridge and into the Han River.
THE END
