Apocalypse: I Awaken Future Sight in the Zombie Apocalypse

Chapter 114- Backstabbing (Final Chap 4/5: 2 in 1 Chap)

After throwing the phone outside, Kai closed the door and then gripped his submachine gun close to his chest, as he leaned against the locked door.

Han Soo retrieved the three flashlights that illuminated the bathroom. He then strapped one to the side of his gun. However, the light was minimal, so they were practically in complete darkness while listening to the terrifying screams of the zombies coming from the other side of the door.

One minute…

Two minutes…

Three minutes…

Four minutes…

Five minutes…

Six minutes…

A full six-minute pass while everyone held their breaths before the sound of the zombies screeching died down.

Kai turned and opened the door to peek out. When he saw there were no zombies along the hallway, he poked his head out further to glance down both the halls to be extra cautious.

Eyes flashing decisiveness, Kai withdrew his head back in and addressed everyone in a whisper as Han Soo turned on a flashlight.

"Han Soo you'll take the lead. I'll be in the middle with everyone, and you cover the back. Got it?"

Kai glanced at Seo-joon when he said those last words, and Seo-joon nodded.

"Okay, we have less than fifteen minutes to reach the roof, let's go."

Kai then opened the door fully and everyone nervously rushed out. They didn't hesitate to dart to the stairs leading to the roof several meters ahead.

The ones who were feeling the most anxious were Ah-yong and Jeon-sok. However, they had no time to pay attention to their pounding hearts as they tried to keep pace with Jin-woo, Kai, and Han Soo at the front.

Surprisingly, even with Jin-woo carrying Mai-sun he was fast, while his steps were more silent than theirs.

Seo-joon, who lagged a few steps behind kept glancing back, his grip on the gun in his hand never loosening.

Han Soo at the front held his submachine gun strapped around his shoulder and shone the flashlight on it ahead.

It was night and the stars were out, however, the moon was nowhere to be seen. Nonetheless, the starry night sky still produced a luminescent glow that shone through the broken flow-to-ceiling windows. This source of light clashed with the light coming from the flashlight and produced shadows of the five children and two adults.

In this environment, only their rapid footsteps could be heard, but thankfully they were drowned out by the screams of the zombies that floated up from the ground and through the broken windows.

Perhaps due to Kai's earlier warning of being left behind if they fell, neither Jeon-sok nor the others wavered in their steps despite how fast they were going.

In only a few seconds of sprinting, the group made it to the stairs and began climbing up.

At the top, there was a stair landing, and the double metal doors to the roof were a few feet to the left.

Han Soo was the first to climb the stairs, but he didn't immediately head to the doors; instead, he stopped on the stair landing and turned around to shine the light so the others could see their way up. However, as soon as he turned, his expression changed, and he hurriedly motioned for everyone to stop.

At the same time, Jin-woo sensed something and turned to look behind them as well.

Everyone was looking ahead so they saw Han Soo's actions and immediately stopped.

Jin-woo and Kai were just two steps away from reaching the stair landing, while Ah-yong and Jeon-sok were in the middle of the stairs. Seo-joon was the farthest behind at the bottom of the steps.

After stopping, everyone held their breaths and turned to look behind them at what Han Soo saw.

Immediately, Jeon-sok almost fainted from freight.

Unknowingly, nearly a dozen zombies appeared at the end of the hallway and were slowly walking in this direction. They did not show any reaction to the noises being made by the zombies outside the broken windows, only stumbling forward.

"It's fine, the noise from the zombies is disrupting their sense of hearing."

Jin-woo said.

Having someone suddenly speak scared everyone witless. However, seeing that the zombies down the hall hadn't reacted to Jin-woo's voice, they sighed in relief.

"Let's go, there's a chain lock on the door. We need to break it before those zombies make it past the windows."

Everyone nodded and started heading up the steps.

After everyone reached the stair landing, Han Soo turned the flashlight onto the door expecting to see a chain lock as Jin-woo said, but was instead met with two metal door handles free from any restraints.

Everyone turned to glance at Jin-woo, but Jin-woo's expression was calm as he said.

"It might be lock, let's hurry."

Han Soo let go of his gun and reached forward to check if the door was actually locked. With a slight creak, the right metal door was slightly pushed open revealing that it wasn't locked at all.

Everyone turned to look at Jin-woo once again with varying expressions, and this time Jin-woo's expression was one of confusion.

If the door was opened, why did his sense of danger back then show that this path was the second most dangerous one?

From a logical standpoint, the bathroom should have been no safer than the roof. As long as they had bait to lure the zombies away, even if they destroyed the only lock on the roof door to the roof, the zombies would have ignored them as they did in the female bathroom.

'Something isn't right.'

Jin-woo thought internally, but right now he couldn't figure out the issue.

Up until now, he hadn't received any warnings from his ability except for the one for the zombies behind them. However, he had only sensed them after Han Soo had spotted them.

'There is a delay…'

"It's open so let's go."

Han Soo said as he tentatively pushed the door open and stepped forward.

"No wait-"

Jin-woo wanted to stop Han Soo because he felt that something was wrong, however, he was too late.

The moment Han Soo stepped onto the roof a piercing screech rang out before a zombie lunged at him from behind the door.

Han Soo was unable to react in time and could only hold his gun sideways to block the zombie as he was tackled to the ground.

"Shit, get off him!"

Shocked and angry, Kai immediately stepped forward and kicked the zombie off Han Soo.

However, the flashlight that was detached from Han Soo's gun shone light onto the zombie knocked to the ground, as well as the others that slowly started converging from all over the roof.

"Fuck! Where did these fuckers come from?!"

Kai yelled before he fired at the zombies who immediately began charging at them. But he stepped onto the roof and locked the door behind him, so the sound of bullets and the screeching zombies were muffled behind the metal door.

Ah-yong, Jeon-sok, Seo-joon, and Jin-woo holding Mai-sun were left on the stair landing as Han Soo and Kai fired at the zombies on the roof behind the door.

With no flashlights, they were in complete darkness, with the only light source being the flashing sparks of the gunshots that seeped through the glass windows on the two metal doors.

Jeon-sok looked behind them to see the faint silhouettes of the zombies created by the starry night sky coming through the broken windows. His face paled when he saw them twitching and looking around.

"They- they're going to come at us."

Jeon-sok stumbled back to the metal doors, but the muffled sound of gunshots and zombies screeching made him flinch back. Realizing they were trapped he began to panic even more.

"Shut up, what are you scared for?"

Seo-joon said annoyed as he pointed the gun at the zombies moving closer to them.

"As long as they approach us, I'll kill them."

"No, don't. You'll draw more zombies in the school to our location!"

Jeon-sok yelled in a subdued tone as he grabbed Seo-joon's arm.

"Damn it, don't grab me."

"Then don't do something so crazy!"

"Stop it you two."

Ah-yong said, breaking up Jeon-sok and Seo-joon's small scuffle. She then turned to Jin-woo and asked.

"Jin, what are we going to do?"

Jin-woo remained silent.

The sound of gunshots echoed in his ears as he looked at Ah-yong and the others' faces that were faintly outlined in the dark. His arms unconsciously clenched around Mai-sun's body still in his hold.

What should he do? His abilities failed to warn him of the horde on the roof in time, and the zombies behind them had already reached the female bathroom. They were trapped with no room to go forward or back.

Jin-woo's expression paled.

"I-"

However, at that moment, a faint buzzing sound caused Jin-woo to pause. He and the others glanced at the metal doors which were pushed open by Han Soo.

"Quick, the helicopter is here!"

Jeon-sok, who was feeling despair, suddenly had his face lit up with excitement and he was the first to rush to the door.

However, a zombie that wasn't led away by Kai charged him. Han Soo hurriedly fired and killed the zombie, but this attracted more, causing him to be distracted and not pay attention to others.

"Go, hurry!"

Jin-woo said, urging Ah-yong to follow behind Jeon-sok. At the same time, the sound of the helicopter blades grew louder, almost sounding like it was above the school.

Ah-yong didn't hesitate to rush through the door, the sound of the helicopter making her excitement grow with it.

Jin-woo, while holding Mai-sun, was about to rush through the door next, but a sudden grunt from behind made him stop and hurriedly turn around.

Seo-joon grabbed his left side and then collapsed to the ground, revealing the person behind him who was holding a bloody knife.

"You-!"

Jin-woo's face contorted with rage as he was about to yell, however, Mai-sun, who was in his arms, suddenly grabbed his hand and bit into it.

Ye-jun made his move at that moment and swung at Jin-woo with the bloody knife.

Mai-sun was flung towards Ye-jun, making him stumble and miss Jin-woo who dodged to the side.

Ye-jun didn't attack Jin-woo again but instead fixed his glasses and stared at him with a mocking smile. Their positions had shifted, with Ye-jun now standing in front of the door, and Jin-woo at the steps where Seo-joon lay clutching his wound.

As Mai-sun slowly got up from the ground, Jin-woo stared coldly at the two before he briefly glanced at Seo-joon who was curled up on the ground. His face hardened when he saw the pool of blood that had already come from underneath him.

Without hesitation, Jin-woo grabbed the gun strapped to his thigh before he turned and went to fire at Ye-jun and Mai-sun. However, Ye-jun reacted quickly and he grabbed Mai-sun and dragged her through the door.

"Damn it."

Jin-woo cursed and lowered his gun without firing. The zombies were still in the hallway.

The sound of the helicopter outside made them frantically spin around in place, with some jumping through the broken window trying to get to the noise.

Jin-woo placed the gun on the ground next to Seo-joon and took out his phone from his jacket. He turned on the flashlight and immediately he saw the extent of Seo-joon's wound.

His clothes and hands were dyed red, and despite putting pressure on the wound, blood was profusely seeping through his fingers like a small stream.

"Hold still, I'm going to help."

With trembling hands, Jin-woo positioned his phone on the ground with the flashlight face up. He then zipped down his jacket planning on fashioning his inside shirt into bandage strips for Seo-joon.

However, Seo-joon suddenly shook his head and said.

"No, just go."

Hearing this, Jin-woo's actions froze and he stared at Seo-joon's face which had become pale due to a loss of blood.

"Don't be stupid, you're still alive so why would I leave?"

Jin-woo ignored Seo-joon's words and continued to take off his upper wear, his actions becoming faster and more frantic.

"No, stop."

Jin-woo didn't stop.

"Damn it Jin, I said stop!"

Seo-joon yelled as he reached out and grabbed Jin-woo's hand finally making him stop. However, his shout echoed loudly and finally drew the attention of the zombies in the hallway, causing them to immediately rush in this direction.

Seeing this, Jin-woo gritted his teeth and quickly picked up the gun on the ground and fired at them. His ability to auto-aim was gone, but he still managed to headshot the six zombies.

When the last zombies fell below the steps, Jin-woo turned to glare at Seo-joon on the ground and said through gritted teeth.

"You did that on purpose."

As soon as Jin-woo said that loud screeching echoed out down the hallway past the stairs. Not long after, intense and rapid footsteps could be heard approaching their direction.
