Chapter 2: Chapter 2: A Cannibal Flower
As Jiang Yan's thoughts willed it, a nearly transparent Vine swiftly formed from the void.
At the end of the Vine was a Cannibal Flower resembling the bloodthirsty, sharp-toothed plants from the game Plants vs. Zombies!
She tried it out, and found that the Vine which bore the Cannibal Flower could reach as far as the iron door.
After the trial, Jiang Yan thought "withdraw," and then gently coiled one of the Cannibal Flower's side branches around the iron bars of the headboard. The wire bed's iron bars immediately buckled under the force.
It seemed that the Vine was very strong, and it didn't leave behind any trace.
If that was the case, she could let the Cannibal Flower Devour one, leaving the other to be directly strangled by a side branch of the Vine.
But there was one problem: the fact that she couldn't hide the remaining body for long.
After all, it was still a society governed by law, not yet the apocalypse.
She needed to use this month to hoard items like crazy and be fully prepared for everything, rather than being entangled in a lawsuit or even risking the chance of being forced to "sew."
Although, given the hidden nature of this basement as arranged by Song Deming, the probability of the bodies being discovered should be small, she didn't need to take risks.
And simply letting the two fiends die in one second like that would be letting them off too easy!
Jiang Yan thought for a moment, and a plan for revenge quickly surfaced in her mind.
After testing the Cannibal Flower, Jiang Yan resumed her sleeping position, closed her eyes, and quietly waited for Song Deming and Zhang Kai to arrive.
"Clang!"
A few minutes passed, and the iron door was pushed open again. The two beasts walked in, one after the other.
Zhang Kai placed the solid wood chopping block next to Jiang Yan's wrist, lifted her hand wearing the jade bracelet onto it, and said, "Brother Song, I'll hold it. You're stronger, why don't you do it?"
"Okay," replied Song Deming as he set his phone down by the foot of the bed and crouched down.
The two greedily eyed the jade bracelet on Jiang Yan's wrist, completely unaware that a transparent Vine had silently appeared behind them.
"Whoosh!"
"Whoosh!"
"Whoosh!"
Three transparent Vines quickly emerged from the void. Two aimed directly at the bodies of Song Deming and Zhang Kai, and one shot straight for the hand that held the knife.
The two men stumbled as they crouched, falling to the ground on their buttocks.
Meanwhile, an invisible force bound their hands and feet.
They tried to reach out to pull off the force that held them, only to grasp at empty air.
"!!!!!" Song Deming's breathing halted, and his pupils constricted.
But the alert Song grabbed the machete next to him.
"Brother Song, what the hell is this?? Shit! I swear I'm hallucinating Plants vs. Zombies in magnified version!!! I—" Zhang Kai was not as collected, seeing a Cannibal Flower from the void with its mouth wide open and a scarlet tongue, famished and staring at him, his pupils shrunk, his pants wet, scared to the point of urinating himself.
But soon, the fear in his eyes turned into pain:
Because Song Deming was staring with wide eyes, holding a machete aimed at him.
"Splat!!"
"Ahhhh!!!!!"
"..."
A few minutes later, two more gruesomely mutilated beast-like corpses lay among puddles of blood on the floor.
Song Deming died a particularly brutal death, with half his head chopped off.
The other half of his skull was scattered about, which Jiang Yan had snatched from the mouth of the Cannibal Flower.
She didn't say a word the entire time, enduring the bloody scenes and foul smell in the room, continuing to curl up on the wire bed.
Bearing it for an hour, guessing that the effects of the hypnotic should have worn off, she finally stood up from the bed.
Using a corner of the bedsheet to cushion her hand, Jiang Yan picked up Song Deming's phone and dialed the police.
*
Five hours later.
Jiang Yan, having completed her statement and checks at the police station, appeared weak and powerless as she took her little bear backpack from a female officer.
The bag contained her ID card, passport, phone, mask, hat, and some bank cards.
Originally, there were also bundles of unused cash and foreign currency, but they had already been taken by Song Deming.
This bag had been brought back along with other evidence by the police who arrived at Jiang Yan's house.
According to her memory from the past life, this backpack and its contents had been burned clean by Song Deming and Zhang Kai the night she was locked in the basement.
Fortunately, she had come back early in her reincarnation.
Otherwise, replacing her ID and passport would have been extremely troublesome.
After all, to survive in the apocalypse, besides hoarding supplies, one also needed firearms.
And clearly, firearms could only be procured overseas.
At the police station, the only weapon found at the scene bore only the fingerprints of Zhang Kai and Song Deming.
The motive for the crime began with a temporary struggle over Jiang Yan's jade bracelet, worth over a billion yuan, and expanded to her family's tens of billions in assets, which triggered a mutual desire to silence each other.
At the same time, the police also discovered Song Deming's massive gambling debts abroad over the past year.
As for the only eyewitness at the scene, Jiang Yan, she had been injected with a strong hypnotic and had been asleep the entire time.
She was also locked with a short chain, her range of movement limited to the wire bed.
Although there were some aspects of the scene that could not be explained scientifically, and there were many doubts, they indeed had nothing to do with Jiang Yan.
Furthermore, the villa was in a remote suburb, and in order not to leave any trace of himself, Song Deming had removed all the surveillance equipment; the housekeepers and gardeners had been dismissed a long time ago, which, rather ironically, ended up facilitating Jiang Yan's plan perfectly.
*
Standing at the entrance of the police station, Jiang Yan, reborn and having successfully dealt with her first nemesis, finally saw the long-missed sunshine and breathed fresh air.
But now was not the time for her to completely relax. The apocalypse would come in three months, and she needed to start preparing early.
As for the one that got away, Zhang Qiqi, when the cataclysm arrived, she would eventually settle the score!
Taking a hat and a mask out of her backpack, Jiang Yan turned her phone back on, hailed a cab, and headed straight for the small villa where she had lived alone before.
Although the apocalypse was three months away on August 8th, in reality, she didn't have as much time as she thought; she had to plan carefully.
*
"Ding-dong!"
Just as Jiang Yan entered the living room and changed into slippers, the doorbell rang.
She glanced at the monitor; it was the delivery she had ordered halfway home.
Putting the mask back on, she went to open the door.
Jiang Yan's wealth in Anming City was nothing extraordinary, but since her mother's mysterious death abroad a week ago, her family was thrust into the limelight.
Though Song Deming was cleared of criminal suspicions, gossip hinted that her mother's disappearance was like a real-life version of "Gone Girl."
With today's abduction of Jiang Yan and the deaths of Song Deming and Zhang Kai, the police station had considered the continual "impact" on her family and specially notified internally, forbidding any leakage of this news.
Otherwise, Jiang Yan figured she would have been hounded by reporters as soon as she left the station.
She was not afraid, but that would make liquidating her assets and her hoarding plan increasingly more difficult.
