Chapter 203
Who would have imagined it? That a Dragon’s Bone would exist in this land. Hot waves of heat seemed to shimmer above the towering Bone Mountain.
This was not an illusion.
[It’s a place that always emits intense heat. Judging by the influence it still has on this world even in death, it must have been an extraordinary creature.]
I frowned at Simon’s explanation. It seemed he was unaware that the mountain emitting heat was made of Dragon’s Bones.
“When did that bone mountain come into existence?”
[It has existed since before I was born. Only Skasha would have the precise information.]
Atop the mountain radiating heat, there was indeed a large castle as Simon had said. It also appeared to be built of bones, displaying a white color.
Even if I concentrated mana in my eyes, I saw nothing. It felt as if a hazy curtain was draped around, blocking my view with a special power.
“So, Skasha is up there?”
[It’s not certain. I merely brought you to Skasha’s territory.]
It seemed unlikely that I could extract any additional information from Simon. He did not appear to know much.
I sighed heavily as I tucked Simon into my bag. In this place, nothing was visible. That meant I had to approach closer to confirm Skasha’s existence.
Entering a wizard’s domain recklessly was truly foolish, but as I was now, I had no other choice.
Before climbing the mountain filled with hot heat, I needed to prepare a few things.
“Phew…”
A faint mana mixed with my exhaled breath. This was a method I had used when I first encountered the study of magic, to make up for my lack of mana.
“Phew…”
Repeating my inhalations and exhalations, the unfamiliar mana streaming into my body began to rebel against the mana I possessed.
To resolve this issue, I had created a Circle that resided in my heart. It would store the traits of mana and form a great ring to draw from whenever needed.
However, that wasn’t necessary now. It would take considerable time for a new Circle to be created and for the mana in my body to acclimate to the mana of the Grimshade Kingdom.
Therefore, I began to channel the absorbed mana outward. The Evil Mana filled with intense heat started to flow out of my body and envelop me.
This was similar to the mana barrier meant for protection. Of course, since it wasn’t a defensive magic, I didn’t add complex formulas.
The mana within my body was hidden from presence, and the mana absorbed from outside cloaked me. The moment these two types of magic coexisted, the faint presence I had been emitting disappeared completely.
I looked down to examine my hands. I could feel them through my bodily senses, but all I saw was a blurry shape.
A strange, unfamiliar sensation. It felt as if I was standing on the boundary between dream and reality. I even wondered if I would vanish if I closed my eyes and ceased to think.
Such thoughts were pointless. I shook my head and slowly set my feet toward Skasha’s territory.
When I inspected the magical traces swirling around me, it was clear that several precautionary magic spells had been installed to guard against intruders. However, the two magic spells I had used seemed to have had a significant effect, as no magic was triggered despite entering Skasha’s realm.
As I climbed the mountain, the closer I got to the white castle, the temperature rose. Now, a faint flame began to flicker at the heat surging from the mountain below.
How long had I been walking like that? When the castle, which had looked small in the distance, had grown larger, I could sense Skasha’s presence.
The sharp spikes of bone formed the castle walls. Looking up along the walls created in such a way revealed a gigantic altar close to the sky.
Skasha stood upon that altar, caressing a massive crystal ball.
Its gigantic form, appearing to be at least ten meters tall. The armor made of bones and the black flames billowing beneath it blurred my vision.
The skull with four protruding horns was also engulfed in black flames, but its empty eyes shone with a bright red flame.
Fortunately, it seemed Skasha hadn’t sensed my approach. I cautiously lowered my gaze, fearing it would meet mine. Then the massive crystal ball that Skasha held came into view.
There was no sign of the Evil Mana characteristic of Dark Magic emanating from the shimmering crystal ball. It was the moment I concentrated mana to verify more accurate information.
Whoosh-!
Suddenly, hot flames surged forth. Like a dog welcoming its owner by wagging its tail, the dazzling flames intertwined around my body.
The flames ignited by Kalbain’s bones didn’t cause substantial harm to me. However, at the moment the flames enveloped me, my concealed presence was revealed, and the effects of the two magic spells I had cast dissipated.
“Ah…”
A foolish sigh escaped my lips, filled with mixed emotions.
[You…]
As I blinked while clutching my racing heart, I caught sight of Skasha’s gaze fixed upon me. It seemed even it was startled by my sudden appearance.
A brief silence. As our eyes met, in the second that followed, every muscle of my body tensed up to an extreme level. My heart raced, and the speed of the blood flowing through my veins quickened. The Circle lodged in my heart began to rotate rapidly, hastening the mana within my body.
One second passed. The minimal preparations for combat had been completed.
Crack-!
An odd shattering sound suddenly echoed. The very fabric of space felt as if it was being crushed, and in that moment, I swiftly drew my Fire Dragon Sword and swung it.
Clang-!
“Grrr…”
The shock transmitted through the blade was considerable. I frowned and hurriedly leaped back. At that moment, strange mana began to gather in the direction I was flying.
It was the activation of space-related magic. That magic, which had yanked me out of the airship, was surely a Forced Teleport.
The instant I recognized the activation of space magic, my eyes flared with heat as I calculated to reverse the spell. Even now, the magic was being activated, with the distortion of space increasing, but it couldn’t be faster than my thought process.
I poured my mana into the activated magic. While I couldn’t cancel the magic that had already been triggered, I could modify the results with slight interference.
At least. I believed that.
Magic is such that if one possesses a steadfast belief that their spell can succeed and harbors a vivid image, even ridiculous phenomena can manifest in this world.
Thus began my intense desire and faith, birthing a small mystery. With the Teleport coordinates altered, the ends of the cloak trailing behind me ripped away and vanished.
The vanished cloak piece appeared right in front of Skasha. It unhesitatingly grasped the suddenly manifested piece of cloak.
If I hadn’t altered the teleport coordinates, what would have been caught would have been not the piece of cloak, but me.
[I was just thinking of coming to see you… once this task is complete.]
The moment Skasha’s voice flowed out, I sensed a strange mana’s current behind me. It was a precursor to the same spatial magic from before.
Again, it was the moment when I interfered with the magic to shake the coordinates.
Boom-!
What appeared after a fleeting distortion was Skasha’s gigantic form.
Crash-!
Before I even had the chance to scream, the impact shook my body. In a single blow, the mana barrier protecting me shattered, and my bones went out of alignment.
As I sustained injuries, my body began to regenerate. The form of the Dragon appeared quickly outside as my physical durability surged to its peak. The moment horns sprouted on my head, I used Blink to create distance.
Zap-!
[Too slow.]
“This…!”
The suddenly audible familiar voice. As I turned around, Skasha’s massive fist was flying towards me.
Did it read the coordinates for Blink? I set aside the small doubt that popped into my mind and desperately swung my sword.
Clang-!
There was no margin for error in the exchange. Each time the sword, entwined with mana, clashed with Skasha’s fist, my mana broke off in chunks.
With the activation of physical enhancement and the Fire Dragon Sword and Ice Dragon Sword, alongside the continuous use of healing magic to treat my wounds, my mana rapidly diminished.
The magic I could use while fighting Skasha was limited. At most, it was only Blink or Magic Missile, which require extremely short preparation time.
How wonderful would it have been if the Golden Dragon’s body, which would protect me, were nearby?
I bit my lip, casting a glance at the shortbow draped over my shoulder. Just once, an elf’s treasure that could save me from any danger.
The moment I use it, I would be transported to a safe place. It would generally be a wise decision to use it. If I continued fighting, I could only foresee the future where I’d exhaust all my mana and be smashed into the ground by Skasha’s fist.
However, the thought that lingered in my mind was the allied forces that would remain here after I disappeared. Just then, my hesitant hand lingered near the shortbow.
Boom-!
Without any special precursor, a colossal mana erupted. A massive magic circle rose into the air, encompassing the entire area, which included the great mountain, as if to declare that this mana stemmed from Skasha.
It was the very moment our fiery gazes met. Its mouth opened wide, and from within it flowed a peculiar voice.
