Chapter 121: Chapter 121
"This place sure keeps getting spookier. When are these creepy hallways ever gonna end?" Chachamaru took a deep breath and fought his way through the dark.
Despite having good vision even in the abyss, he insisted on staying behind Douma and letting the blonde do the navigating. Douma was braver than he was and had excellent vision even in the dark so he might as well hand it over to him for this expedition.
"I didn't agree to getting squeezed by these walls!"
"It's a short distance Chachamaru what are you talking about?" There was a dead end right in front of them. Douma came to a stop in front of the wall and shone his torch to inspect it better.
The feline snapped and clawed his arms fearfully. "Well yeah but it's really spooky look at those corners."
Paying no attention to Chachamaru's cowardice, Douma prodded the wall slightly waiting for a response from the other side.
Chachamaru widened his eyes at the dead end, only realizing now that there wasn't any other way to get around this particular part of the ancient temple. "What's a dead end doing here of all places?! Great, just great." He squawked.
While Chachamaru was ranting about the ancient temple, Douma stood there keeping an eye on the wall. This left Chachamaru a little confused, there was nothing special about that wall. Why would his friend spend so much time staring at it? As much as he didn't want to say it, whatever Douma was planning must be absolutely ridiculous.
"Are you just gonna stand there? It's a dead end don't you get it?"
"No look."
Turns out the dead end was actually a stone door that opened on its own, revealing a dark hallway on the other side.
Both Douma and Chachamaru carried on down the hall, raising their torches to lit up the place.
"This ancient temple is full of surprises, man that got me."
A sound of a hiss echoed throughout the hallway several times, sending a chill down Chachamaru's spine when he recognized what it was.
"There's a snake here!" Chachamaru cried as he looked around in panic.
Slithering from the crevices of the walls was the faint figure of the serpent that was lurking around the hallway. It hanged from the ceiling, blending in with the shadows and hissing at the two guests of the ancient temple. The vicious fangs and look of ill intent on its face that came off as a warning for those exploring further.
"Yikes!" Chachamaru pointed at the green snake on the ceiling that lashed out at him, falling from the ceiling and landing on the feline who grabbed its body that was slowly wrapping itself on his wrists.
When the viper was about to bite down on his flesh, Chachamaru pulled it away from his arm and threw it to the floor, watching the animal slither away into the cracks in the corners.
"What was that!" Chachamaru sighed and continued following Douma who was approaching another dead end which left the feline disappointed.
"This is one big confinement for a small snake." The blonde said, trying to decipher the hieroglyphics on the wall.
With a crossed face, Chachamaru stomped towards Douma and snorted very loudly on purpose. "Another dead end? What's the plan now I'm not taking anymore risks!" Chachamaru recalled the dangerous trap they encountered and the viper that almost took a bite out of him. He really wanted to get this done and over with but with these dangers he might as well abort the mission, maybe there was nothing to find here, the meteorite could be somewhere else.
Taking a deep breath, Chachamaru spoke, "Look it's not like the meteorite or some treasure is gonna appear in this ancient temple of all places," He tried not to offend Douma in any way after all they came here to find the meteorite. "We're better off looking someplace else."
"What makes you think the meteorite is really here? That giant could be lying to lure people into his trap. He must be a ruthless barbarian to be able to survive these conditions-"
Similar to the previous stone door, the wall split into two revealing another quiet and dark area, only this time it appeared to be wider with a slope facing them.
Before the two friends could move an inch to proceed further, they heard the sound of something heavy rolling down the slope.
Douma saw the outline of a large sphere heading towards them, he immediately turned around, telling Chachamaru who also knew what was about to happen, to run away fast.
"This keeps happening!" The feline sprinted down the narrow hallway hoping to find an exit ahead or along the corners of the walls. It was too much of a hassle especially with a giant sphere rolling behind them at the same speed.
An opening in the ground appeared a few meters away from them, both Douma and Chachamaru ran faster to get to this exit. There appeared to be another area located under this hallway which was brighter and more spacious.
Douma and Chachamaru exchanged glances with each other knowing what they had to do, once the two of them got close to the opening, they jumped down and landed on the floor as the rolling sphere above them crashed into the wall ahead resulting in the entire place shaking vigorously from the impact.
Unfortunately it wasn't the time to take a break yet as Douma noticed something peculiar about the flooring and instantly told Chachamaru to get up and follow him out of this place, which the feline quickly did out of fear.
The floor which was a platform started sinking with magma slowly flowing in from the sides.
Douma got to the other side and reached out to Chachamaru who leaped up and grabbed the edge of the other platform, pushing himself desperately, he could feel the heat from below rising and heating up the place.
The blonde grabbed Chachamaru's arm and helped him up the platform. Chachamaru took one last glance at the lava that had seeped onto the floor he sat on, it was hard to believe that even the most harmful of things can be extremely deadly.
"That was close." Chachamaru said, catching his breath.
Both Douma and Chachamaru then headed down the stairs which led to another part of the ancient temple that awaited them.
