Chapter 7: Allison's Family
Selene's POV
I Luna Selene vow to rescue my mate and restore order in the state. If it is not done immediately, it will be too late.
I could not trust the old patriarch William Wolf, who had gone senile.
I was appalled that he hatched a plan to execute me and my mate, his son.
Allison was given the task of eliminating me.
It would be too foolish if I killed Allison instead. It was the easiest thing for me to execute him.
I remembered the words of my dad, Alpha King Darius, "If you learn the art of turning adversity in your favor, you are unbeatable in the long run."
I knew this was the time of my adversity. I hadn't lost a battle yet. It was the time to gather my resources. It was the time to recognize my real friends and real enemies, and it was the time to turn foes into friends.
I wondered if Allison could be tamed to be brought into my camp.
I had to clear his misconceptions. I had to gift and bribe him. I had already set Rita on this task. She had to identify a weakness of Allison that I could use to my advantage.
I thanked my stars that the state had snapped the power connection. If the power connection was not snapped, my game would have been over. The state could have found out about my activities in real-time.
If the power connection had been intact, the state would have certainly tried to contact Allison. Allison's lack of communication might have raised their suspicion. Fortunately, the power had not been restored.
The power could be restored any moment now. At least that was my guess. They would not restore power at least till the time I was alive. I had to make them believe that I was dead.
My father-in-law was a vicious person, who would not believe I was dead unless he saw me dead with his own eyes. He was unlikely to believe even if Allison told him that I was dead.
I was waiting for Rita to arrive before I could make my next move.
It was also not the right time to visit Allison in his prison cell. Whenever he saw me, he would scowl his face in disgust at my sight. I knew if I visited him he might lose his temper and inflict abuses on me. It would not only be insulting to me but could also put a brake to my plan which was now going in the right direction.
Just then, I saw Rita coming. There was a lady and a young kid with her.
I wondered who Rita had brought with her.
"Your Highness, let me introduce you to Allison's wife, Myrah, and their young child Ketto."
As Rita introduced them to me, they bowed their head in salutation, while I smiled affectionately.
"I will make them sit comfortably in the waiting room, Your Highness before I speak to you."
"Yes, please," I said, "and treat them well. Ensure that they have everything they need."
Rita came back to me and began speaking to me in a hush-hush tone.
"Allison's greatest weakness, Your Highness is his family – Myrah and Ketto."
I was listening to her attentively.
"It is unfortunate, Your Highness that the poor kid barely 6 or 7 years old suffers from a terrible disease. Allison did his best to get the best treatment but the burden of treatment is too heavy. Our state has unfortunately no policy on healthcare."
I knew Rita was faithfully reporting to me. Our state has no policy on healthcare and each man is left to fend for himself.
I walked up to the lady waiting in the waiting room.
"What ailment does your child suffer from, lady, if I may ask?" I queried.
"Multiple Sclerosis, Your Highness" she replied in a weak, submissive voice.
"Cheer up lady! I said patting her back. MS is no longer a dreaded ailment. We have our full sympathy with you. Your child will suffer no more. Nor will your family. From now on, your child is the state's responsibility."
I saw a spark of happiness in the eyes of the lady. She smiled with a lit-up face, stood up, head bowed down, and said, "Thank you, Your Highness. We will never forget your kindness."
I liked her response and knew it would be easy to wean Allison to my camp.
"Don't thank me, I am only doing my duty expected of the state," I said, "If you want to thank someone, thank Rita, my ADC. I have instructed her to visit places to find unfortunate citizens in need of our assistance."
Myrah stood up once again, "Thank you, madam," she said addressing Rita.
Rita's face lit up with happiness and pride.
My Dad used to say, "You can win anyone to your side Selene, if you know how to respect an individual."
I thought, it was the best time to send Myrah and Ketto to meet Allison, who had recovered from the harsh beating by now.
I did not need to brainwash or indoctrinate the lady. I did not even need to instruct her what to talk about and discuss with her husband because I knew anything – good or bad – I might say would only go against me.
I knew Allison would never like the way we treated him. No matter how well his mate spoke about me, it would be difficult to get over his biases.
It was quite possible that they might begin bickering and quarreling over me when I would come with an incredible and irresistible offer that Allison could never refuse.
I think my intervention before Myrah's meeting with her mate would not work. The best time for me to intervene would be after Myrah's meeting or at the time when they would begin bickering.
"Myrah, one reason we called you here was to meet your mate. You might have been worried about missing him for two days. He is a nice gentleman but we had to arrest him because he attempted to assassinate me, Your Queen Luna…"
"Oh My God!" She opened her mouth in shock and surprise as she covered her mouth with her palm.
"No…no…no…Holy Luna! I will speak to him, Your Highness, and pray Goddess Luna to make him see right from wrong."
"Yes, please go and meet him, and don't worry about me. Speak with your mate as much as you want. We will not listen to a word exchanged between you two…"
I knew I was lying. I had to listen to each word they exchanged.
As it is I could not trust anyone….and I was right!
