Alpha’s Obsession, Luna’s Revenge:

Chapter 6: My Speech

The Royal Guard outside my cell would sneak inside to ask me if I needed anything. I was too weak, too down, and depressed to think properly.

This guard had come to me like my Man Friday. I might not have survived my undignified and depressive confinement in the damp, cold cell had it not been for that kind guard.

Initially, I did not trust the guard as Selene used to caution me never to trust anyone unless I had strong reasons to believe otherwise.

It was the thoughts and motivating words of my mate that kept me alive with the motivational fire her words always had. She used to tell me, "Never, Never, Never, Ever Give up."

I did not believe initially that the guard was really on my side. He was the only one who showed me some respect. He used to care for me. Since Selene had taught me not to trust anyone, I thought his behavior was exaggerated, unlike any other guard. I suspected that he was deliberately planted to monitor me. He could be snooping on me.

It was unfortunate that I did not trust the guard initially. Yet I heard him attentively.

He would inform me about the ongoing activities in the palace.

It was through him that I came to know that my dad had once again assumed the title of Alpha King. My dad was a harsh ruler. After he resumed the throne, he went on a killing spree. His immediate goal was to purge the traitors.

This poor guard also told me that Dad had installed snooping devices all over the country. Fortunately for us, these devices are ineffective now, the guard had informed me. My dad had snapped the power connection to stop the traitors from communicating. With power gone, these devices were not effective.

The poor soul didn't know, he was so ignorant.

I have been in the highest seat of power. I know the ways of these Royal people and their double standards. They would secure themselves first before taking any step against the common folks. This strategy of snapping the power was used several times in the past but the rule didn't apply to the inner precincts of the Royal Palace.

The Palace would look dark from the outside to give the general impression that the palace was no exception to the order passed for everyone. But no one within the inner precincts of the palace suffered the power outage.

When the guard spoke of fear for his life but being safe now because of the power outage, I smiled at his innocence. The poor soul had not only endangered my life but also his own life. I was sure these snooping devices within the prison cells would be active.

When I became the Alpha King, I dismantled these snooping devices on the advice of my dearest Selene, whose ideas were democratic and forward-looking with the welfare of people as her top priority.

I felt bad that my dad was hell-bent on taking the state to primitive days.

When the guard informed me about the snooping devices, I was sure I would be caught red-handed along with this guard, whom I had begun to trust somewhat.

I had to think of ways to save myself.

Selene, my mate used to tell me that oratory has the power to tilt the balance in your favor. She had explained to me the importance of timing in oratory. What to say, when, and how is critical to the success of oratory.

I knew my dad was going to be my audience. I had to convince him of my credibility as a speaker and connect with him emotionally. It didn't matter whether I was logical or not. It was not the time to be logical but to highlight the element of pathos. Selene mostly focused on pathos.

"Pathos in your speech can move the audience in your favor, Donnell," she would smile and ask me to deliver my mock speech once again."

I was not mentally prepared to take the action. It didn't matter that I was going to make this poor guard a victim, even if I had begun to trust him somewhat.

I wasn't unscrupulous but my Queen Luna, my dear wife, often told me that sacrifices are needed for a larger cause. She reminded me that I was the King and no cause was more ethical and greater than the safety and survival of the King because if a King is lost, the country is lost."

I felt highly motivated when I remembered her words.

When the guard told me, "Your Highness! I am sorry to inform you that our Queen Luna Selene has most probably been eliminated by now. I think she has been assassinated in cold blood. I have credible evidence to believe that your Dad ordered Inspector Allison to eliminate her in cold blood."

As soon as I heard these words, my head bowed down in reverence and at the impact of this sad news. I felt pathetic, forlorn, and devoid of my energy. I could not help tears falling down my eyes.

But I was now determined. I had to take command of the circumstances and rise to the occasion.

"Don't blurt out this dirty name, you Omega!" I howled, "I hate traitors. Don't even call her a Queen, you idiot. She was a traitor and a traitor deserves to be punished the way she met her end."

I stopped for a moment as I looked at the terror-stricken face of this guard.

I was still not sure whether snooping devices had been installed in prison cells or not and even if installed, whether they were working or not. But I took a chance presuming, they were working. It was a chance to regain my freedom.

"If I was the King, I might have beheaded you right away. You are lucky, I am confined in chains. Traitors are the worst enemies of the state even if, they are my relatives. She was a traitor, and I am not here to listen to the glories of traitors. They must be punished wherever they may be."

After my speech, I slumped down in disappointment. The guard had sneaked out. I was overcome with guilt for having abused my mate, who always stood by me.

I wondered if the statements I just made were heard beyond the confines of the cell.

The next day, I had reasons to believe that my statements were heard, but something unexpected happened that I was not ready for.
