Chapter 15: War Cry or Celebration?
Selene's POV
I was highly delighted to learn from Allison, sensitive information that I could use in future to my advantage.
My immediate concern was to find out my mate's whereabouts. He was critical to my plan. I could not have carried out my plan if he had been kidnapped and murdered. I gave it my top priority to search for him.
I was expecting Allison to carryout this task because he was close to Alpha King Mark Donnell.
I could now trust him completely, but a lingering doubt still persisted with me. My dad had taught me to never, never, never, ever trust anyone, especially in matters relating to statesmanship.
It is difficult to trust those who have a high intelligence quotient. Allison is highly intelligent. Even when he exudes a positive aroma, he is capable of thinking multi-dimensionally.
I am sure he would be weighing pros and cons of his allegiance with me and comparing the same with the cost of loyalty to Alpha William Wolf. If the conditions appeared favorable to align with the Alpha King, an intelligent person would want to have his cake and eat it too.
Allison could enhance his chances. It was quite possible. He could act like a double agent. He could ditch me anytime if my chances to regain the throne were unlikely.
I did not want to take any chances with this possibility.
I was suddenly alarmed when Allison asked me politely, "What are you overthinking your Highness?"
I was instantly startled thinking, could Allison read my thoughts.
"Nothing serious," I smiled back, "but yes, I will discuss with you sensitive matters when you come back after fulfilling this task."
Allison smiled back without saying a word.
I was still struggling with the thought of whether it would be a good idea to trust Allison. Did I have a choice? A counter thought surged within me.
I thought hard about it and eventually came to a plan. It was not something big. I could not monitor Allison 24x7. I could not have him under the constant vigil of ferocious wolves.
I could not have trusted even with his mate and the kid under my custody because intelligent men are also ambitious and capable of harming their families to meet their self-interest.
It came as a flash – the idea.
I summoned Dr. David and discussed with him my idea in the privacy of my chamber.
It had been already too late. I was expecting the restoration of electricity. The darkness indicated that either the messenger had misinformed or that the messenger had not yet arrived at the royal palace.
As the time passed, my palpitations and heartbeats increased. I was getting restless. I anticipated a surprise attack on this police station. The most critical moments in my life have been the moments of uncertainty.
I hated uncertainties, especially when life and death were at stake.
A few days ago, I had asked the lone wolf, who had attacked Jackson to make a safe hideout for us somewhere in the areas bordering the Southern Territory.
This lone wolf, Lima was no ordinary wolf as I came to know. I cannot reveal all the information I have right now about him except that he was already tried and tested. There was no reason to be suspicious of him.
I had zeroed in on a special location for meetings with him. The meeting days were already decided to coincide with the Full Moon Night of the month. On this night we would shift and pray.
Rita was more loyal to me than anyone else. Next to Rita, Dr. David was also loyal. I planned to operationalize my base from this place. Only Rita and David were to stay with me. The others were expected to remain at the Police Station in the service of the state. They were my men but they would act for the state to keep me informed. My hideout would be unknown to me.
When the darkness did not end, I grew increasingly suspicious and began strengthening my defense.
I summoned Allison. "I have something important to discuss with you," I said.
"Yes, Your Highness, I am ready to serve you."
"I am expecting an attack at this station. We may not handle the ferocity of the stack, if we decide to fight. We have to handle it with tact and diplomacy."
"Yes, Your Highness, I understand."
"They will come looking for me, most probably. I guess, it was a bad decision to arrest the messenger, even for a short while."
Allison nodded.
"His suspicion could have enraged Alpha William Wolf. He may have read in it more than the poor messenger."
"I agree Your Highness,"
"I think, Alpha William Wolf may attack this station anytime under the cover of darkness. The lack of electricity is a sure indication of the impending doom."
"We don't have much time, " I said, "You know how best to handle the situation."
As I was instructing Allison, we heard wolves howling. They were several miles away. Allison and the others got alarmed, while I tried smelling their collective odor.
The force immediately became alert with guns loaded, ready to shoot if the pack approached.
Allison was ready with ammunition.
"We are ready, Your Highness, to take on this rag-tag pack, even William Wolf has sent them against us."
"No, I cautioned, you don't have to initiate the attack. Keep your white flag ready. Close all the doors and windows. Ask them why they are here. If they insist on taking me with them to be punished, convince them that you have already done the job.
The pack had come considerably closer now. They were barely two miles away from us. I tried smelling their scent. They smelled positive and jubilant. Yet I had to be careful. I instructed the officers to close all doors and windows.
I wondered, what was the occasion for their celebration. The pack smelled friendly. Their howls were clearly one of celebration and jubilation, but I wondered why were they approaching us.
I did not want to take any risk. I reassured the officers not to get scared. The pack approaching us is a friendly pack and they mean no harm. I asked the officers to take care, while I along with Rita and Dr. David left the police station.
For the next 24 hours, I was under intense suspense till I came to know what happened last night.
