Chapter 10: The Rogue Wolf
Myrah's POV
Hours later, Queen Selene returned. She was bubbling with excitement. She was happy and energetic. We were waiting to hear her.
"I am thrilled," she said addressing us, "to announce that we have taken our first step to the mission we have."
As I said, when she came back a surprise awaited us. Her announcement of her mission was a surprise but I did not know exactly what the mission was. She didn't disclose it.
I guess no one there knew of her mission.
She just referred to "mission" and was secretive about it.
She didn't trust everyone there. Probably, she didn't trust me.
I dare not interrupt her to ask, what the mission was.
The distrust was still in the air. We had to work under lamp or torchlight in the night. Our cellular phones' battery The power snap was not yet restored.
"This darkness has to go, soon enough," she said.
Then she had a thought. She abruptly stopped speaking to us.
"Jackson," she commanded, "I want to see Allison immediately".
I wondered, why she wanted to see Allison. I dare not ask her. I did not want to irritate her. I did not want to lose the benefits offered to our child, Ketto.
Queen Luna Selene went inside the cell along with Inspector Jacob. Inspector Jacob came out of the cell alone barely moments later, while Luna Selene was left alone with Allison.
We could only guess, what they were discussing. They discussed it for a long time.
My only worry was that their discussion could end badly because Allison was temperamentally unpredictable. If he hated someone because of his suspicion, he was incapable of hiding his hatred and disgust.
I was fearful that I might not get the medical benefits for my child if my mate quarreled with the Queen.
I also felt scared that my mate would remain incarcerated forever or would be killed.
I kept praying to Goddess Luna for a happy outcome of their meeting.
Everything was quiet now.
And then suddenly, a lone wolf sprang up inside the police station from nowhere. The surprise attack was horrendous.
The violent wolf jumped at the jugular of Inspector Jacob who was vigilant and guarding the station.
The inspector fell and his blood spilled everywhere. By now the police force had become alert.
The cops surrounded the lone wolf, who appeared violent. He saw the cops with his bloodshot eyes as the blood of Inspector Jackson kept dripping out of his mouth.
These events were taking place at lightning speed. Suddenly, Queen Selene rushed out from the cell shouting "Stop, stop, no one will kill."
The cops about to shoot the lone wolf froze at the command. They did not harm the lone wolf while physically immobilizing him.
"We don't want him killed. He may have important information to share with us," Queen Luna Selene said.
We were intrigued.
It was evident that this was no ordinary event. Something important was brewing that no one was aware of or probably only the Queen was aware of.
Things were getting mysterious for me now. I desperately wanted to know the conversation that was going on between the Queen and Allison. I was also curious about the lone wolf that was arrested. I wanted to know his purpose. I wasn't sure whether this lone wolf was a random rogue or someone highly connected.
Doctor David was quick to react after Jacob fell bleeding. He felt his pulse, and remarked to the Queen, "His pulse is very weak. He has lost too much blood and I guess he may not survive unless we have a blood transfusion for him immediately."
I was beyond words, and never more surprised when the Queen stepped forward, saying, "Here, take my blood, if that serves the purpose".
The others watching her immediately volunteered. "Take mine, take mine," they competing with one another.
I marveled at the leadership quality of the Queen. She knew the skill of turning the crowd in her favor. The more I watched her, the more I was becoming her fan.
The doctor was overwhelmed. "I need to match the blood."
"Oh, here it is," the doctor said taking out the ID card of Jacob from his pocket, "A+". Anyone A+ here."
Several volunteers stepped forward, while Dr David took one of the healthy volunteers with him.
All of us were relieved. Inspector Jacob would survive with timely intervention.
I saw the lone wolf standing in a corner, arrested.
The Queen did not ask anyone to interrogate him. Perhaps she did not want anyone else to interrogate him. Who knows what information he had and whether it was wise to share that information with anyone except the most trustworthy officers?
When the Queen said, "I will interrogate this traitor," I thought it was the right decision.
But the cops were baying for his blood. This rogue wolf had just attacked their senior and fellow officer.
Our pack is vehemently aggressive, if their fellow wolf is attacked. For the pack leaders an eye for an eye is an old dictum, they follow the punitive dictum of two eyes for an eye.
They were barely able to control themselves. I could see some of the cops shifting. The extreme rage can make them shift. Rage is a raw emotion, and any raw emotion can make them shift.
If some of them did actually shift, it would be difficult to control them. They would certainly attack the rogue wolf and tear it apart.
Queen Luna Selene was quick to note their shifting form and she intervened just in the nick of time; "Stop that!" she thundered, "I don't want any violence here. Any further blood bath must stop. I will ensure the culprit is punished."
Queen Luna Selene's words had a sobering effect. The cops about to transform into their violent wolf form suddenly stopped and reversed back into fine disciplined cops.
But, if the Queen did not act swiftly, I knew it would be difficult to control the ire of the cops.
Realizing the sensitivity of the issue, the Queen violently took hold of the rogue wolf by his collar and dragged him to a separate room for questioning.
I don't know what happened after a brief questioning or what information did the queen gather but she came out dragging the rogue by his collar.
"This rogue deserves the most severe punishment," she announced.
"But not here. I don't want any blood bath here," she said while dragging him outside the Police Station. She instructed us to stay there and wait for her return.
I desperately wanted to know what conversation she had with my mate. It also makes me curious to know the rogue wolf's identity and what she would do with him. What information she got? Will she kill the rogue wolf?"
