Age of Ascension: Forging an Immortal Realm from Nothing

chapter 27 - The Timid Legendary Hero (3/4)

"The wedding day?" Wu Chi blurted out, the thought connecting audibly.
"Wait, so you weren't summoned after you… you know, died?"
The question hung in the air, thick with unspoken implications. Wu Chi stared, his gamer brain trying to process the information. Summoning a hero from after their death was standard isekai logic. It was clean, no loose ends. But summoning someone mid-event? That was a whole different can of worms.
"No," Qin Keqing answered, her voice barely a whisper. She looked down at her own impossibly intricate wedding gown as if seeing it for the first time. A blush crept up her neck.
"Young Master summoned me here… I wonder what chaos my disappearance will cause at the wedding."
Oh, great. So not only did I crash a wedding, I kidnapped the bride. Wu Chi winced internally.
“Ahem… So you’re different from Lin Daiyu,” he said, trying to sound like a competent and not-at-all-panicked leader.
“Well, from now on, you're one of my heroes. You should have received the basic info package. If there’s anything you don’t understand, or just want to know, you can ask me.” He gestured vaguely towards the door. “Outside, you have a partner waiting. Her name is Lin Daiyu.”
The Era of Sovereigns the Endless void, the Myriad Realms, Gods, Demons, and the clash of ten thousand races… The data stream flooded Qin Keqing’s mind. For a hero, this was standard procedure, a basic information download so the Lord didn’t have to explain everything from scratch. But the sheer, world-shattering scale of it all left her reeling.
One moment, she was in her bridal chamber, her heart a frantic drum of anxiety, resigned to a fate arranged by her adoptive parents—a marriage to Jia Rong. The next, she wasn't just out of the room, she was out of her entire world, thrust into a glorious, terrifying new era. And the man before her… was her master.

Qin Keqing was not, by nature, a strong-willed person. Her defining characteristic had always been her gentle compliance. She looked at Wu Chi with a timid, frightened gaze, her mind screaming but her voice only managing a soft whimper of acknowledgment. At worst, it is only death, she thought, steeling herself for whatever horror was to come.
But the horror never came. Wu Chi didn't loom over her or make any untoward advances. He just explained the situation with a kind of awkward friendliness. He was even going to introduce her to a partner? A tiny warmth bloomed in her chest, pushing back some of the cold fear.
“Right, that phoenix crown and wedding dress look super inconvenient,” Wu Chi said, smacking his forehead as if just remembering. He pulled out the several sets of dresses he’d won from his disastrous gacha streak.
“Here, pick one of these and change into something more comfortable.”
“I will listen to the Young Master,” Qin Keqing murmured. She reached up with slender, delicate hands and lifted the heavy phoenix crown from her head. A cascade of silky black hair tumbled down over her shoulders. Without the imposing headpiece, her face seemed softer, younger. The crimson eyeshadow couldn't hide the beautiful, startling color of her eyes.
Her gaze fell upon the clothes laid out on the table, and her eyes widened in genuine surprise. Each garment was a masterpiece of design and material, flawless to the last stitch. In her world, not even a thousand gold pieces could buy such finery. A pretty dress is always a weakness for a woman, and a spark of genuine delight flickered in her eyes.
She reached for one, then paused, her hand hovering in the air. She remembered Wu Chi was still standing there. A fresh wave of panic washed over her. She wanted to ask him to leave, but she was terrified of angering him. He was her master now. What if he refused? What if he got angry?
After a moment of agonizing indecision, she bit her lip. Her hands trembling slightly, she began to slowly untie the sash of her wedding gown. With a soft clatter, the heavy robes and a dozen accompanying accessories fell to the floor.
Wu Chi, who had been trying very hard to study a particularly interesting spot on the ceiling, but the sound made him look. And then his brain promptly shut down.
Stripped of the bulky gown, Qin Keqing stood there in only her thin inner garments. Her long hair framed a face that was a devastating combination of shy, bright, and fragile. The dress had completely hidden a figure that was curved and proportioned in a way that could only be described as perfect. Wu Chi felt his mouth go dry.
"Young Master…" she squeaked, her voice a fragile, trembling thing, cheeks burning with shame as she tried to cover herself with her arms.
That rebooted his brain. Wu Chi's face went from pale to beet-red in half a second.
"RIGHT! OUTSIDE! I'LL BE WAITING OUTSIDE!" he yelped, spinning around and power-walking out the door so fast he almost tripped.
Watching him leave, Qin Keqing finally let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. A small, relieved smile touched her lips, and with a newfound sense of excitement, she turned to the beautiful clothes on the table and began to choose.

Outside the [Red Chamber], Wu Chi sucked in a long, shaky breath and immediately chugged half a bottle of mineral water.
Leaning against the doorframe, Lin Daiyu watched him, an amused smile playing on her lips. "
Young Master, is the new sister a great beauty? You seem to be in quite a hurry."
"You should know her. It's Qin Keqing," Wu Chi managed, after another large gulp of water. He cleared his throat.
"But, ah, there's a catch. I summoned her right from her wedding to Jia Rong."
"Is such a thing even possible?" Lin Daiyu's eyes widened in genuine surprise. She had no real connection to Qin Keqing in their original story, but she knew of the poor girl's fate, destroyed by that vile father and son duo of the Jia clan.
"Well, that is for the best. If she had married into the Ningguo Mansion, she would have been doomed to die sooner or later."
She gave a small, knowing smile, her gaze turning teasingly towards Wu Chi.
"And the Young Master should be happy as well. After all, she is an untouched maiden, is she not?"
"…."  Wu Chi's brain, which had just started to cool down, began to smoke again.
Wait a minute, he thought, the cogs in his brain starting to turn in a very ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ different direction. When you put it like that…
A slow, goofy grin spread across his face.
This was, perhaps, not so bad after all.
