After Time Traveling, I was Forced to Marry a Wealthy Family

Chapter 48 - I

Mu Ci’s expression remained gloomy as he left Jing Mansion. The fatigue on Zheng Xuran’s face lingered in his heart, prompting him to ask Gu Huai, “Have Jing Zheng and Zheng Xuran always been like this?”

Gu Huai smiled, saying, “Not necessarily. You might not know that Zheng Xuran’s heart may die one day, but people may die before their time come.”

“Gu Huai!” Mu Ci’s face suddenly darkened.

Gu Huai, sensing Mu Ci’s anger, quickly shifted his tone, “But things are unpredictable. I guarantee that one day Jing Zheng will realize how good Zheng Xuran is, and then they’ll have a happy ending.” After saying this, Gu Huai felt a sudden twinge of bitterness and envied Jing Zheng. He thought, ‘Others can find happiness with just a few words of support. As for me, the road to pursuing my wife seems endless and uncertain.’

With complicated eyes, Gu Huai stared at Mu Ci’s profile and sighed inwardly, admitting defeat. He thought, ‘Who made me tempted first? This feels like a landslide, an irreversible collapse.’

Mu Ci glanced at Gu Huai inexplicably, perhaps wondering why the sudden silence. Though Mu Ci wasn’t fond of chatting with him, he wanted to learn more about Zheng Xuran, so he rarely asked, “Can Jing Zheng truly realize Zheng Xuran’s goodness? I don’t trust him.”

Gu Huai silently complained, thinking, ‘Even if I tell you, you won’t believe it.’

Having known Jing Zheng for over a decade, Gu Huai understood him well. For instance, the day Mu Ci accidentally entered the solitary room – if not for his intervention, Mu Ci might not have returned unscathed.

For Jing Zheng, Zheng Xuran was merely a convenient tool or a submissive and loyal pet. Love? Not even Jing Zheng, but even Gu Huai found it laughable. The idea of Jing Zheng falling in love was more shocking than the earth collapsing.

However, Gu Huai refrained from sharing these thoughts with Mu Ci to avoid disrupting his good mood. Over the past three months, Gu Huai had worked hard to coax him into changing his mind.

Gu Huai, the head of the powerful Gu family, covertly observed Mu Ci from the back seat, contemplating ways to make him happy. His gaze resembled a wolf, evident even to the driver in the rearview mirror, who silently raised the partition.

Several ideas circulated in Gu Huai’s mind until one stuck, and he asked, “Mu Ci, would you like to return to work?”

Mu Ci turned to look at him, and seeing it was effective, Gu Huai seized the opportunity, “Baby, staying at home every day gets boring. It’s the perfect time to go to the company for a change.”

While Mu Ci hadn’t considered work as a remedy for boredom, he also didn’t want to stay home every day. Mentioning Chen Jie’s place, he asked, “Should we go there?”

“No, how about a promotion?” Gu Huai suggested mischievously. “I happen to need a personal assistant.”

Mu Ci became wary, recalling a sentence from an unknown novel: ‘Be an assistant when you have something to do, and be an assistant when you have nothing to do.’

Looking at Gu Huai’s eyes, he sensed an ulterior motive.

“I’m not going!” Mu Ci glared angrily, crossed his arms, and leaned against the car window, choosing to remain silent.

Gu Huai, unaware of Mu Ci’s thoughts, innocently remarked, “Why not go? It’d be great to work together. You see as a personal assistant, I won’t make you serve tea, wash, and cook. Plus, don’t you want to see me whenever you lift your head?”

Mu Ci glanced back at him respectfully and said sincerely, “I don’t want to at all.”

Gu Huai, hurt, leaned against the car window, his heart in his hands. He looked sadly at all living beings outside the glass window, deeply feeling the world’s coldness and his wife’s ruthlessness.

.

However, Mu Ci eventually went to Hanhai to continue working, still as a model but no longer in Chen Jie’s group. Mu Ci couldn’t stand the teasing and being called ‘sister-in-law’ upon entering the door.

Although Gu Huai found such flattery useful, it was mental torture for Mu Ci. Gu Huai had to transfer him to another group.

To avoid a repeat, on the reporting day, Mu Ci left Gu Huai alone and went to the group alone. He was unanimously welcomed by the group members as a new addition. This marked the first half of the rule of going to work happily and returning home safely.

However, Gu Huai wasn’t very happy. Watching Mu Ci’s face through closed-circuit surveillance, he became increasingly irritated, successfully crushing the pen in his hand.

People like Gu Huai wanted to label Mu Ci as Mr. Gu’s little wife, warning strangers not to mistake him for someone else and punishing those who dared to touch him. However, that couldn’t be done now. Although Gu Huai desired to shelter Mu Ci in a golden house, the psychiatrist emphasized that Mu Ci needed more contact with the outside environment and communication with others, not just with Gu Huai.

Due to the doctor’s orders, Gu Huai reluctantly let Mu Ci out, watching him chat and laugh with various people.

When lunchtime approached, a young girl from the same group invited Mu Ci to have a meal with her. Mu Ci, not having been to the cafeteria yet, found it novel and forgot about the agreement to have dinner with Gu Huai, following the girl as she walked towards the cafeteria.
