Chapter 32: CORE HUNT
Magic Training Against Monsters and Collecting Their Cores
The morning sun cast a soft, golden light over the training fields as the academy's instructors gathered students for a practical lesson. The fields stretched out beyond the academy walls, blending into the dense, mysterious forest that whispered tales of magical beasts. Today was no ordinary class; it was the first hands-on training session.
They would be heading into the wild to face monsters and collect their magical cores—a rite of passage for all budding mages.
As Kit Mi Kai, Olamsuri, Kipkemboi, and Jajwok assembled on the grounds, they felt a mixture of excitement and anticipation. Each of them had donned their new academy uniforms: tailored coats embroidered with symbols representing their magical affinities, long protective gloves, and sturdy boots.
Kit Mi Kai adjusted his earth-colored coat, which bore a small silver crest symbolizing his earth affinity, while Jajwok's crackled with lightning patterns. Olamsuri and Kipkemboi, equally vibrant, had their elemental symbols stitched with intricate detail, making them stand out as students with great potential.
The professor in charge of the training, a battle-hardened mage named Professor Aldon, began explaining the rules.
"Today, you'll venture beyond the academy's protective boundaries. Your goal is to defeat monsters and harvest their magical cores. Each core represents the essence of a monster's magic, and absorbing these will allow you to unlock more about your own potential. But remember—these creatures can be fierce, and some will fight back with everything they've got."
He gestured to the forest edge, where shadows seemed to shift ominously. "Stick together. Even though I'll be observing from a distance, out there, you'll be relying on each other. The deeper you go, the stronger the monsters. Don't let greed take you too far."
The group exchanged determined glances, and as they took their first steps beyond the academy's boundaries, the thrill of adventure filled the air.
The forest's atmosphere was enchanting, tinged with an earthy musk and illuminated by specks of sunlight filtering through the dense canopy. The sounds of birds and distant growls echoed around them, heightening their senses. They soon encountered their first challenge—a pack of mana wolves prowling between the trees. Their eyes glowed a menacing blue, signaling a strong magical presence.
"Alright, let's test our powers," Kipkemboi said, unsheathing his katana, its blade reflecting the light as he steadied himself. He reached into his aura, calling upon the skill he'd gained and a transparent, giant, human-shaped figure materialized around him.
"Let's go!" he shouted, charging forward as his aura creation swung a sword formed of pure energy, slicing through the air. The wolves snarled, leaping to dodge the attack.
Jajwok joined, his fingers crackling with blue lightning. "Let's see how they handle a shock." He thrust his hand toward the ground, sending bolts surging through the earth. The electricity reached the wolves, stunning them just long enough for Kit Mi Kai to lift boulders from the ground with a motion of his hands, hurling them with precision.
Olamsuri darted between her friends, teleporting with flashes of void magic. With her rungu in hand, she appeared next to a wolf, striking it down before it had a chance to react.
They moved in perfect harmony, each attack flowing into the next, exploiting the wolves' every weakness. Within moments, they stood victorious, the defeated wolves disappearing into motes of energy, leaving behind small, shimmering crystals—their magical cores.
Kit Mi Kai knelt to examine one of the cores, holding it up to the light. "This core… it feels alive. The energy within it is still pulsing."
Professor Aldon's voice boomed from the distance. "Good work! These cores contain raw magical power. Collect them—they'll be useful for enhancing your abilities."
With a growing sense of accomplishment, they ventured deeper into the forest, encountering more creatures. Each battle grew more intense, pushing them to tap into new strategies and levels of control over their abilities.
After an hour of trekking, they stumbled upon a clearing filled with massive, armored beetles. These creatures were unlike the wolves; their magic was defensive, making them resilient to direct attacks. As they clashed with the beetles, the squad found themselves struggling to pierce their thick shells.
"I can't get through!" Olamsuri panted, teleporting out of the way as a beetle charged.
"Leave that to me," Kipkemboi declared. Summoning his aura construct, he concentrated, forming a spear that pulsed with raw energy. With a swift thrust, he pierced through one of the beetles, cracking its armor and causing it to collapse.
Jajwok smirked. "Nice! Now let's electrify things." He launched a bolt of lightning at another beetle, exploiting the crack in its shell created by Kit Mi Kai's rock barrage. The lightning surged through the creature, causing it to shudder and fall.
With coordination, they dispatched the rest of the beetles, each dropping a core larger and brighter than those of the wolves. Their bags were beginning to fill with cores, each pulsating with magical energy.
Just as they started to relax, a low growl rumbled through the clearing. From the shadows emerged a massive, bear-like creature with fur that shimmered like starlight. Its eyes were filled with intelligence and malice, and they realized it was no ordinary beast.
"Is that… a starlit grizzly? From one of the lessons from the class" Kit Mi Kai whispered, his voice laced with awe and a hint of fear. Starlit grizzlies were creatures of legend, known for their power to absorb magic and reflect it back at their attackers.
"This is going to be tough," Kipkemboi said, gripping his katana as the aura construct formed around him once more. "But we've come this far. Let's take it down together."
The grizzly charged, its massive paws shaking the ground. Olamsuri teleported out of its path, striking it with her rungu as she reappeared, but the bear's fur absorbed the blow, glowing briefly before dimming.
Jajwok frowned. "It's like it's feeding off our attacks!"
Kit Mi Kai closed his eyes, centering himself. "Let's combine our powers. We'll need to overwhelm it."
Kipkemboi nodded, and they each focused, pouring their energy into a single, combined attack. Jajwok's lightning surged through the ground, mingling with Kit Mi Kai's rocks and Kipkemboi's aura construct. Olamsuri teleported to the bear's side, distracting it just as their combined power struck.
The bear roared, its body momentarily paralyzed as the magic overwhelmed it. Kipkemboi seized the moment, charging forward with his aura-formed spear and plunging it deep into the creature's chest.
With a final, ear-splitting roar, the grizzly collapsed, its body disintegrating into a shower of stardust, leaving behind an enormous, radiant core. They stared at it, breathing heavily, the weight of their achievement settling over them.
"We did it," Olamsuri murmured, a smile breaking through her exhaustion.
They returned to the academy, each of them carrying a bag filled with cores. As they approached the training grounds, other students stopped to stare, whispering in awe.
Professor Aldon watched them, a proud glint in his eyes. "Well done. You've proven yourselves capable. But remember—this is only the beginning. There are far greater dangers out there."
Just as the four basked in the thrill of their successful training, a sudden commotion echoed across the academy grounds. A short, broad-shouldered figure emerged from the crowd, clad in layers of intricately woven leather armor, adorned with various enchanted symbols that seemed to pulse with an otherworldly glow.
His beard was as thick and rich as an ancient tapestry, braided with silver rings and glistening gems, each one engraved with runes, it was the dwarf from the previous day he had returned after collecting data of what type of weapons would suit the students.
The dwarf strode toward them, his heavy boots thudding against the ground with each purposeful step. In his hands, he carried a large, heavily reinforced chest bound in shimmering steel. When he arrived in front of them, he gave a nod of approval.
Kit Mi Kai stepped forward, unable to hide his curiosity. "Bromir, are those… weapons?"
"Aye," Bromir said, patting the chest fondly. "And not just any weapons. These are forged from the finest metals of the dwarf kingdom. Strong, resilient, and enhanced with ancient enchantments from my clan. Let's see if you're worthy of them."
He opened the chest, and an ethereal glow poured forth, illuminating their faces with a magical shimmer. Bromir lifted Olamsuri's rungu, now modified with intricate etchings along its surface, each symbol inlaid with enchanted emeralds that sparkled like captured starlight.
"This here is now reinforced with orichalcum," Bromir explained, handing it to Olamsuri. "It'll make your void magic hit harder and travel farther. Plus, those gems will amplify your magic affinity, giving it extra punch."
Olamsuri's eyes widened as she accepted her enhanced weapon, feeling a newfound power resonate through it. She gave it an experimental twirl, and the air seemed to hum around it.
Next, Bromir lifted Kipkemboi's katana. It was transformed, its once simple steel blade now replaced with gleaming dragonstone, the edges razor-sharp and etched with fiery red runes.
"Kipkemboi," Bromir said with a nod, "this dragonstone blade will harness and amplify your aura. It'll make your strikes more precise, and with the added enchantment, it can slice through almost any defense."
Kipkemboi took the katana with reverence, feeling the strength radiate from the blade. With a single swing, he could feel the air tremble, his own aura intensifying.
Bromir then turned to Kit Mi Kai, pulling out a pair of iron gloves embedded with copper veins that glowed a faint green. "For you, lad. These iron gloves will magnify your control over earth magic. With them, you can shape and manipulate stone as if it were clay in your hands."
Kit Mi Kai slipped on the gloves, feeling the rush of connection between him and the ground below. A sense of unity with the earth flooded his senses, as if he could feel every rock and root surrounding him.
Lastly, Bromir retrieved a set of daggers for Jajwok. Unlike the others, these daggers were dark, crafted from midnight obsidian with electric blue runes that crackled along their edges.
"These are yours, Jajwok. Twin daggers forged from thunderstone. They're not just sharp—they carry lightning within them. Every strike will pulse with electricity, increasing your speed and precision in combat."
Jajwok's grin stretched wide as he tested the daggers, feeling a charge run up his arms as he swung them through the air. Sparks crackled along the blades, making him nearly giddy with excitement.
Bromir gave them each a final, satisfied look. "Now you've got weapons worthy of heroes. Use them wisely."
With that, he closed his chest, slinging it back onto his shoulder with ease. The dwarf gave them a salute and began to walk away, but not before glancing back with a wink. "Oh, and don't break 'em too quickly. Dwarven craftsmanship is tough, but even we've got limits."
