Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 101: Getting to know one another

As Violet stood at the edge of the central valley, she shook off the oddity of that trunked beast and instead turned to face her companion and new party members. She was still a touch unsure about the two girls, whilst she felt a strange connection to the other dragon. Violet was unable to pin point exactly why that was the case, this left her feeling a touch unsure.

After all Violet had learnt to listen to her instincts quite well within the central valley. And they were being oddly silent about her fellow dragon.

The dogkin was a simpler matter, at least from Violet's point of view. She just assumed that she was the companion of Rhyana, just like Luna was to her. If this was actually true or not Violet didn't quite know but just based on their general comfort around each other she assumed that to be the case.

But the fact remained that both she and Luna hardly knew these two, and if they were to travel together for a prolonged period of time, it would make sense for them to spend some time getting to know one another properly.

"So how did the two of you meet?" Violet asked, feeling that would probabally be a good topic to start with.

The two girls looked at each other and after a moments hesitation Rhyana opted to reply. "Well shortly after I was born really, my egg was sold to a farm that specialised is raising dragons. Susan was a slave there and was assigned to be my primary caretaker. She was the only one who showed any kindness to me as I grew up and over time we developed a friendship of sorts."

It was a simple answer but also quite depressing, Violet was quite unsure how to respond to that and looked furtively towards Luna hoping that she may be able to come up with something to say. Thankfully her companion pulled through for her!

"That sounds like a horrible place to live. I'm happy that you at least had each other. I know that if it wasn't for Violet here I would be long dead." Luna's voice was subdued but held a hint of hope towards the end.

A small smile grew on Susan's face at that and she looked over at Rhyana with clear affection. "Yeah, I won't lie and say that living under the chain was a pleasant experience. But as I always had an affinity with the young dragons I often found myself tending to them. Sadly most of the dragons there are…" she paused then seeming unsure on what to say, or how to say it.

Rhyana however didn't seem to care and spoke up for her. "Most of the dragons raised in captivity are already broken. They have little to no true intelligence, they can hardly even be called dragons!" Her voice was filled with scorn at the memory. "The kingdom worked hard to breed the intelligence out of dragons, from their point of view we are only worth keeping around if we are dumb, strong and listen to orders."

This deeply disturbed both Violet and Luna. The idea that an entire race had been reduced to such a state, especially one with such inherent power and intelligence as dragons was not a pleasant thing to think about. And knowing that helped them understand why Rhyana was so adamant about destroying the kingdom.

An awkward silence hung over the group for a while after that last statement, only to be broken by Susan as she decided to pick up on her original story. "So yeah whilst most of the young dragons were simple. I gained an understanding of which ones were not so, I was supposed to report this to my masters but I always tried not to. Whenever a intelligent dragon was discovered they were brought away for.. 'reeducation'"

She paused once more a look of deep saddness on her face as she remembered those memories. With a shake of her head she carried on her story. "Anyway when I was first assigned to look after Rhyana here I knew right away that she was different. She acted like all of the other dragons yet her eyes held a spark of intelligence that all the others lacked." She smiled then as she looked over at the blue dragon.

"I knew right that that she was special, so I tried my best to look after her, I tried to bring her extra food and spent time playing with her when no one else was around. We grew to become fond of each other as time passed. Then months later when she was about to be sold off to the royal army the system gave an announcement."

She gave Violet a meaningful look then before continuing. "When the system announced the birth of a wild dragon a miracle happened. All of Rhyanas chains simply fell off her, she then grabbed me and instantly took off flying." She paused as she laughed lightly. "I didn't have a clue what was happening and was scared half to death, I had never flown before and was being held under her as she tried to fly away."

Rhyana chose to speak up then, her voice holding a hint of embarrassment at the memory. "Well I had never flown before and I was trying to focus both on that and not dropping you whilst trying to get away from any soldiers. I don't think I did too badly!" A hint of defensiveness crept into her voice then. That only caused Susan's smile to widen.

Luna meanwhile had a big grin on her face as she looked over at Violet, Violet meanwhile got a bad feeling as she looked at her companions faux innocent expression.

"Well at least Rhyana seemed to be able to properly fly on her first attempt. Violet here"

However, Violet tried to interrupt. "I don't think we need to talk about that just yet…" yet her plee was ignored as Luna carried on unperturbed.

"When Violet first tried to fly.. she managed to stay airborn for around 4 seconds before she crashed! She only managed to fly after several hours of practice!"

Violet shrank back in on herself in embarrassment at the memory of her terrible first attempts at flying. That embarrassment only grew when Luna continued talking. "Then when she finally got to know how to fly she decided that we should jump off a cliff for the first time she took me flying. Thankfully that went well. At least until it came time to landing." An evil grin crept onto Luna's face then as she turned to Violet.

"Why don't you tell them how we managed to land after that first flight?"

Feeling the expectant eyes of their two new companions Violet stoically looked away, yet she still answered under the continual stares. "I hit a tree with my wing and we crashed into the ground."

"Yup we crashed spectacularly, it was a small miracle that we didn't get injured!" Then she let out a light laugh which was quickly joined by Susan.

"Well that sounds about the same as how our first landing went! Rhyana flew us away for a good hour or two before she tried to go in for a landing of her own, except she seemed to have forgotten that I was still dangling beneath her at the time." This time it was Rhyana that looked away in embarrassment.

"So as we were coming into land she went too close to the ground and I ended up hitting a tree! This naturally brought me to a stop and knocked Rhyana right off her ballence, she did a half flip in the air and crashed right into the ground aswell! Thankfully neither of us was properly hurt, well unless you count her pride anyway."

At that the two beastkin laughed at their dragons shared embarrassment as they began to recount more embarrassing moments that they had witnessed their respective dragons do.

Said dragons meanwhile shrank in on themselves slightly as they endured the stories their people cruelly shared.
