"No!" Chris gasped, his heart hammering as all seven men advanced toward him, their shadows stretching across the headlights.
Panic shot through him. He quickly locked the car doors and jammed the gear into reverse, but before he could escape, his car slammed hard into another vehicle that had silently pulled up behind him. The crunch of metal rang in his ears. They had trapped him.
His mind spun. Were these the men his mother spoke aboit? But why him? He didn't steal anything! He didn't touch the money!
Five billion. That number clawed into his mind like fire. No one could ever pay back that kind of debt. Not even if they sold their souls.
They would need to work a lifetime for such amount. Chris didn't know whether to beg the Adkins lawyers for support.
Before he could think further, a heavy bang shook the car. One of the men raised an iron bat and smashed it against the window. Cracks spread like lightning over the glass.
Chris cried out, shielding his face with his arm as another blow shattered the window into a spray of shards. Rough hands reached in, yanked the lock open, and the door flew wide.
"Wait! No! Please...!" His words cut off as they dragged him out, throwing him onto the hard asphalt.
The first punch stole his breath. The second made him choke on blood. Then came boots, fists, and iron blows raining down without mercy. His cries echoed through the night.
"I've done nothing!" Chris tried to plead, each word breaking into a groan of pain. "Please! I'm not the one you want!"
But they didn't stop. They pummeled every part of him, his face, his stomach, his ribs, even his eyes, until he was nothing but a beaten mess on the ground.
Finally, one of the men leaned close, his voice like ice.
"Go to your mother. Tell her next time she won't see you alive. We'll be the ones delivering her message, with your corpse."
They shoved his face into the dirt one last time before walking away, their black car fading back into the shadows.
Chris lay there, broken, until strangers gathered, whispering and pointing. Roughly, two men lifted him, carrying his battered body through the streets and dumping him at the entrance of his apartment.
Inside, Abby was still crying in Gregory's arms when the knock came. Her heart leapt, Chris! He must have come back, finally listening to her. She rushed to the door, ready to scold, to strike him for worrying her.
But when she opened it, the words died on her lips.
A man stood there, her son's height, her son's frame, but his face… oh God. His face was swollen beyond recognition. One eye sealed shut, the other barely open. Bruises painted his skin purple and red, blood trailing from the corner of his mouth.
Abby's knees buckled. "What is this? Who are you?" she cried, though deep inside, she already knew.
"Mum…" Chris croaked, and that single word broke her in half. Tears gushed down her cheeks as she clutched her chest, shaking her head in disbelief.
This wasn't her Chris. Her Chris was alive, untouched, whole. This broken thing before her was someone else. It hadn't even been twenty-four hours since the first plan failed, and already the enemy had come for her son.
Abby staggered back into the apartment, clutching the wall as Chris stumbled inside, each step weak and shaky. She wanted to scream, to claw at her own skin. *What have I done?*
Her greed had doomed them.
Chris collapsed onto the couch, breathing hard, shame burning through his pain. "I should have listened to you, Mother. I swear… from now on, I'll never leave your side again."
Gregory's face twisted with fury as he slammed his fist against the table. "If you'd stayed home, this wouldn't have happened! And now they've smashed the only car we had left!" His voice thundered, though beneath it was his own fear, his own guilt. "I warned you! But maybe you needed this beating to wake up!"
Abby sank to her knees beside her son, stroking his bruised face with trembling fingers. "No, no, no…" she whispered, her tears falling on him like rain. "What have I done to my family?"

At the Adkins mansion, Maybelline laughed out loud when she realized no one was on her side anymore. Since when did Penny get these men to speak up for her.
Who the hell are they? She wondered.
Here she was thinking of eliminating the madman only to discover there were more people to be dealt with.
"I... I didn't mean it that way."at laughed.
"Of course Penny isn't responsible for Ariana's eating habits. Ari had always had such great appetite since she was a child, it's just... She's been eating so much lately." May said.
"Penny dear, you were once fat right? Can you help Ari get fit like you too. She's your sister..."
"Forget it." Ari suddenly said. "I don't need her help to get in shape. I'll see doctor Pen soon. She'll help me lose some weight." Ari said proudly.
"I don't need any help from a dumb illiterate. Hmmmmm yum yum." She bit more into her food. Xavier stared at his child who only smiled at her sisters words.
Ariana was boasting about meeting Penny before Penny. It was quite comical. This daughter of his was the opposite of him. While he loved to put people in their place, his daughter was a silent destroyer.
He couldn't wait to see how she would reveal herself to being the biggest scientist in the country now. It would be a shocker to the world.
"You're right Ari." Maybelline said with a smile.
"I thought the science event date have been shifted?" Penny asked innocently.
"Looks like you'll have to wait a little longer Ari." She smiled.
"Bullshit. The apprenticeship program cannot be shifted. I already sent a mail to Miss Pen and she'll help me. Just say you're jealous I'll be beautiful again Penny." Ari blabbed.
"Why would I be jealous. You should check the website yourself." Ariana rubbed her stained hands on her dress before bringing out her cellphone. She read through the message and her eyes turned wide.
It was true. But how did Penny know about it? She opened her mouth to speak, but Maybelline cut her off quickly when she saw Hughes finally walk in with the bowl of soup.
The soup that contains Poison for the madman. Finally it was time to deal with certain people.
"Ariana don't talk to your elder sister that way. She may not have attended college, but at least she knows how to lose those weight. Something you couldn't do." May scolded her.
Penny has never felt more grateful. She was glad that her mother was seeing through Ariana's antics and was finally doing the right thing.
"But..."
"No buts Ariana. I will not have you insult your elder sister. It's not Penny's fault she didn't attend college like you. I'm sure if she did, she would have been brighter."au smiled at her eldest daughter who smiled back.
Maybe she has been wrong to judge her mother. Maybe May didn't plan the kidnap. If she did, she wouldn't have the boldness to come here today.
For the twenty years Penelope had loved with her mother, she knew one thing for sure. Maybelline didn't know how to hide her feelings. She has always been so outspoken about everything so if she loves her now, then she really did love her.
Hughes instructed the maids to place each bowl of soup before each person on the table. She winked at Maybelline, indicating she had added the poison and May smiled almost immediately. Her victory was here.
She couldn't begin to imagine how the Ma'am would die. But according to the doctors, they said he would drop dead on the floor.
"Let us eat." May announced with joy and everyone dug into their meal.
With each sip she took, her eyes landed on the madman who kept sipping from his spoon, but he wasn't dying yet.
She wondered why. Did the poison not work?
Did the stupid housekeeper not administer it well.
The table was so quiet as everyone ate their meal and then in the next second they all heard a loud sound.
Pppprrrrrtttt!
A loud fart echoed through the dining room, bouncing off the walls like a cannon shot.
