A Comfortable Craftsmanship Life in the corner of Another World: The Workshop the Goddess Gave Me Was a Little Overkill

Episode 9: Living Together with the Elves

I decided not to return to the riverside shelter.

It’s not like I have any particular attachments to that place.

When I asked Mystia if there was a more convenient place, she said yes, so I headed there.

A place with a little bit of space between the trees and a flat ground with few stones. It’s a location that could be used as a tent site.

“nice”

“Isn’t that so? Then I’ll set up a monster avoidance around here. Please don’t cut down trees with strange emblems.”

“You got it”

It seems that Mystia lived in a tent, turf, and a hammock. There was a magical device to hide from the demonic beast, but that monster bird accidentally broke it and laid waste to Mystia’s base, and apparently set its sights on the elf who was bathing.

“Still, I was able to be saved by Soujirou, so my luck is still intact.”

That was a typical Mystia impression.

Well, we’re going to build a new base from here.

As expected, Mystia seems to be skilled at survival, and we all agree.

“Then I’ll go over there.”

She pointed to a place about 10 meters away.

“Ah, wait a minute. Mystia’s hidden storage room only had spare cloth like blankets, right? As a thank you for avoiding monsters, I’ll prepare the walls and ceiling for you.”

“Is it okay? The most difficult part…I mean, if that’s the case, it’s almost finished.”

“Good. It’s not even noon yet. There’s enough room for two people in , and I want to get used to the Sacred Treasure.”

A fallen branch is less hard than a living tree that is still standing. It seems that Mystia was planning to collect it and process it with magic.

In comparison, with , you can even cut down standing trees and make boards without having to collect them. It’s the right person in the right place.

“If there’s anything I can do, please let me know.”

“I’ll do so”

I decided to make a new shelter by making more use of the power of . The one I made yesterday was perfect for survival. It’s not beyond the scope of what you can make with just one knife. It was made as small as possible to save labor.

However, considering the power of the Sacred Treasure, it doesn’t seem to be a problem to find a hardware store nearby, let alone a knife. Let’s enlarge the production to a scale that allows us to make workshop tools and craft gear.

In fact, it would be a waste if we didn’t do that much. The truth is that I want to draw out the capabilities of tools and techniques to create something magnificent.

“Well, I did build a goat shed a long time ago…”

I started work while digging through my vague memories.

First, level the ground. The shovel is safe and treated as a tool. The hoe was impossible. By the way, the name “shovel” has regional characteristics, and is completely reversed depending on the region. I call the part I put my foot on a shovel.

It penetrated tree roots and stones like pudding, so leveling the ground was completed in no time. Once you hit the leveled ground with a tamper to harden it, you’re ready to go.

We gathered building materials by cutting down trees that were reasonably thick, about the size of a two-liter plastic bottle. I had some failures at first, but gradually I was able to determine how far I had to insert the blade to make it fall.

First, cut out the trunk on the side you want to kill into a wedge shape. Next, make a slit from the opposite side a little above the gouged area, leaving one finger length. After that, if you push it lightly, it will fall in that direction under its own weight.

Even if my hands and tools were a miracle from the beginning, the speed of the work would increase depending on my decisions and procedures. If you do a lot of work, your work will naturally improve.

The tools are so versatile that they’re perfect for Mystia. I want to gain proficiency.

While I was trimming the limbs of the fallen tree, Mystia, who seemed to have finished setting the spell, returned.

“Hey! What, did you use magic?”

“You’re the magician.”

“I don’t think my magic can do this. Um, is there anything I can do to help?”

“Then carry the logs to the campsite.”

“Good. Let me help!”

With Mystia’s help, the log collection went smoothly.

Build pillars using thick logs at the four corners of the leveled ground. I also put up some more in between, and finally connected the horizontal logs. I made a skeleton that looks like a rectangular parallelepiped (each face is a parallelogram) frame.

Decide on the entrance and create the shape of the ceiling by adding a right-angled triangular frame with the entrance side raised higher.

The frame of the house is now complete.

“…It’s faster when you know what to do.”

The next step was to arrange and stack the logs that had been cut down to make walls and floors.

Driving wedges into logs collected from felled trees and splitting them in half lengthwise. If you want to split a log lengthwise, a wedge made of wood will suffice. When I hit the wedge with a Craft Gear hammer, it cracked open with one hit.

The logs are then split in half and “fixed” to the frame to create a wall. It was easier than using power tools because it could be “fixed” in an instant without the need for nails or screws.

Again, with Mystia’s help, I quickly built the wall.

Cut the excess protruding parts of the logs stacked as walls together. Then pile it up again on the next side. Repeat this four times to complete the wall.

Once the walls are made, the last step is to make the ceiling.

Well, it’s a very simple one-sided ceiling. The method of making it is not much different from that of a wall. Just fill in the spaces between the bones with material.

What you need to be careful about is that unlike walls, if you make it with logs, you are bound to have a lot of rain leaking through the gaps. Also, if the ceiling is made heavier, the load on the pillars will increase, and if it collapses, the people inside will be crushed.

To solve this problem, a lot of the bark was peeled off in advance.

The bark sheet made from scraped bark is an excellent product that does not allow water to pass through. First, attach this to the ceiling rafters.

It’s not strong enough, so I use Craft Gear to “fix” it so it won’t tear even if an elephant rides on it.

And make the roofing material.

Make a rectangular frame and “fix” the bark by stretching it taut.

The result is a square roofing material with a structure that resembles the canvas of a painting.

The only thing left to do is to put on the roofing material.

“It’s floating and I’m riding it! That’s insane! Ahaha!”

In order to climb to high places, I was “fixing” logs in the air and using them as stairs, and Mystia was thrilled. This looks like a video of a bug in a game. It looks quite strange.

By the way, there is one problem. Naturally, it would be dark inside the hut, which had both walls and ceilings.

However, when I asked about it, Mystia said nonchalantly.

“Light? I can turn it on.”

Mystia used magic to place a light inside the hut. A white light that looked like an LED, brighter than a fire, was installed near the ceiling. I’m really grateful.

…I want to use it too.

“I hardly feel any magic from Soujirou. He’s a typical person who can’t use magic.”

The elf ruthlessly told me this reality when I subtly asked her to teach me magic.

…I wanted to use it. No, really.

Mystia said in shock as her shoulders slumped.

“A sacred treasure is convenient enough, isn’t it?”

That’s for sure.

In any case, once we’ve reached the ceiling, we clean the area around the hut again and then dig a trench. It was dug around the hut, so that even if it rained, the water would flow through the ditch and go elsewhere.

Make a cover so that you can walk on the groove only on the entrance side.

While I was doing some civil engineering work, matsukaze who had been running around, came up to me and sat down, looking at me.

“what’s up?”

Matsukaze answers with a lazy cry.

It jumped into the drain that had been dug and started digging in the ground with its legs. At first, all I could think was “Hori Hori…”, but as I was doing it, I got excited and was like “Baba ba baba”.

I finished installing the drainage ditch while occasionally stroking the pine beetle.

“Do you want to take a break?”

Collect the dirt-covered pine beetle. The puppy I picked up continued to feel the excitement of digging, twisting in my arms and running around in circles at my feet.

We head to the river together and wash off the dirt. Matsukaze was not afraid of water and seemed to enjoy having his feet thoroughly washed.

As I was relaxing by the riverside, soaking my feet and sitting on a handy rock, Mystia appeared with the sound of water.

“Sojiro! There was some good soil!”

“Um, Mystia, are you done yet? I was thinking of helping you from now on.”

“If you’re going to make two, you’ll have to do it really hard.”

While I was building the hut, Mystia used the primitive cart I made to dig up clay.

It’s a simple cart with a minimal framework made of wood, a bark container placed in the center, and wheels made by cutting logs into rings.

The shovel is also made of wood. Thanks to the hardness of the wood, it seemed like if the blade was “fixed” it wouldn’t break even if it dug through clay.

Mystia quickly washed the dirt off her hands and feet and sat down next to me.

The fact that there is a beautiful woman with her clothes rolled up and her bare legs so close to each other that they can almost touch each other gives me a feeling of bad manners.

“I mean, all I can do is gather the materials as I’m told. I have to do my best to do what I can.”

“I can help a lot with just the magic light.”

“That doesn’t make sense!”

Mystia says that, but unlike a bonfire, a magic light doesn’t smell like smoke, and there’s no need to worry about suffocation even if you don’t ventilate it. Moreover, the amount of light is comparable to that of an LED.

I’m very grateful that I’ve received the same benefits as the LED lanterns developed by geniuses in scientific civilization.

If you have ever walked on a mountain trail in the countryside, you will be familiar with the unreliability and difficulty of using torches, and the depth of darkness in the mountains and fields where you would be in trouble without one.

A world where you can die just by walking in the dark. That is nature.

Or rather, did I feel indebted for overdoing it? As I was thinking about this, Mystia tilted her head and turned around.

“Besides, don’t you think it’s a bit unsatisfactory with just magic? After all, isn’t it fun to create something creatively?”

He said that with a carefree smile, and I threw away my jumbled thoughts.

“…That’s right. It’s fun.”

A camper is someone who carefully examines the equipment, down to the tent and peg, before going camping.

Even though it was a Sabaka campaign, it wasn’t like there was no fun in testing my own wits and skills.

“That’s right! I’m with Soujiro this time, so it’s a lot more fun than usual. It’s my first time using a wooden shovel!”

“No, that’s a shovel.”

“Scoop datteba”

Mystia, who was sitting next to me, retorted, bumping my shoulder. However, his face is smiling.

My face was also smiling.

Now, it’s time for the clay that Mystia dug up.

With this, you can eliminate gaps from the walls of your hut.

Dig a hole in the ground and mix clay, dead grass, and sand with water to get the right hardness.

It’s a deteriorating mortar made of composite material.

I painted it on the outside wall of the hut. If you do this, there will be no drafts in the walls of the hut, which are just stacked logs.

I had never done plastering before, but perhaps thanks to Craft Gear, I was able to get the clay hard and paint the wall in one go without making any mistakes.

In my opinion, the construction is as easy as applying paint to drawing paper, but the finish is smooth and there are no unnecessary bumps that are worse than the poor quality of the material.

With this, half of the indoor cold protection measures have been completed.

Let’s start on the other half.

Make a hole in the outer wall of the hut and build a furnace and chimney at the back using stones and soil. Stone-laying can be completed fairly quickly by dropping the top, bottom, left and right sides of the stone with a craft gear, flattening it, and then “fixing” it while assembling. Finally, connect the holes in the outer wall with deteriorated mortar.

Now, even if you light a bonfire inside the hut, the smoke will escape outside. That means it has a mini fireplace. You can warm yourself up with charcoal or a bonfire, and you can do light cooking or make hot water without having to go outside.

Finally, hang a bark sheet over the entrance to use as a door.

“Okay, today’s portion is complete!”

A hut made of wood and earth was completed.

“Yay!”

When I made the declaration, Mystia clapped.

“Wow, that’s amazing. You can’t make this in a day. It’s big! I really want to live here, right?”

“Mystia helped me so much, so please live here proudly. There will be no point in building two of them.”

Two mud huts have been built, one for me and one for Mystia.

We tried to do it all at the same time, but it took until the evening. It gets dark early in the forest, so Mystia’s lights are already floating here and there to illuminate the tent sites.

I’m really grateful.

“Thank you Mystia for making the bed too.”

“Absolutely. That’s all I can afford.”

Collect a large amount of soft grass and tie it into bundles. If you dry them over a bonfire and line them up in large quantities, you can create something like a bed of straw bundles. As long as you cover it with cloth sheets, it is completely a bed, albeit a wild one.

Inside the hut, we made a picture frame sheet large enough for a person to lie down on, and “fixed” it at about knee height. A grass bundle was placed on top of it.

It’s possible to sit or sleep, so if you claim it’s a sofa bed, you can call it that.

However, just “fixing” the bark sheet feels sloppy.

“I’ll make a more proper bed tomorrow.”

When I said that, Mystia looked at me from the side and laughed.

“Yay!”

“Why?”

“People in the village used to say, Men who are particular about their beds spend a lot of time in brothels.”

“That’s the one that’s naughty.”

“Aha, I’ll tell you when I meet that girl.”

“Wait. Is that a girl?”

“Ah, this hut is amazing. The ground is leveled properly! I’m very grateful to God Soujiro and Divine Seal Regalia! It’s great that it has a furnace! Even in the rain, I can make hot water without getting wet! Wow!!”

Mystia stepped into the prefab hut and screamed with joy.

I haven’t heard it anymore.

…Well, I’m glad that you’re happy.

As I listened to the happy voice of the free-spirited elf, I enjoyed it as the result of a great job.
