Episode 10: The One to Whom Gratitude Goes
“Soujiro, are you awake yet?”
“Ah. You can come in.”
When I answered Mystia’s voice, Matsukaze came in first.
I stroked Matsukaze and calmed it down.
“I’m sorry. I completely forgot that I turned on the light. I thought I’d better turn it off if I’m going to sleep.”
While saying that, Mystia came into my cabin.
I can tell you the time, but it’s probably around 21:00. Indeed, if you wake up at sunset, it’s probably a good time to go to bed.
“I’ll be awake for just a little while. I’ll be done soon… I don’t mind if it disappears in about an hour. If you can set a timer or something, you can do it.”
“Are you still making something? What?”
In response to my answer, Mystia approached me with shining eyes.
“It’s not particularly good. But I think we should do this.”
I held out the thing I had next to me.
It’s a carved wooden statue of a god.
“Ah, is this the goddess Soujiro met? Wow, it’s beautiful.”
Mystia politely accepted it while saying this and came to sit down next to me.
“No, I couldn’t see her face or figure, so I just remembered her voice and let my hands move. So it’s mostly a fabrication.”
“It’s a creation, right? But it’s wonderful. I’m sure the goddess will be pleased.”
No matter how far you zoom in, Mystia’s face is beautiful, and she flashes a bright smile in the dimly lit cabin.
I felt relieved at the seemingly innocent reaction.
“I hope so. They were originally connected by a divine statue.”
A board was fixed in a high position in the hut. For now, I plan to display the statue there. I wondered if it was a good idea to create something like a shrine in another world, but Mystia’s reaction wasn’t bad. Seems safe.
“Thank you for showing me this. I’m surprised that it’s not finished yet, even though it’s so well made.”
“Well, I’m just polishing it up and tweaking it a bit.”
It’s already mostly finished, and I’m still making minor adjustments with a file and chisel. I have no experience in modeling work, but surprisingly the results are not bad. It’s probably either the
“Now that I think about it, I’m sorry if you’ve already asked, but do you know the goddess’s name?”
I’m not sure if I said that either. So I’ll say it again.
“Um…I think she said Ana. Ana, the mother goddess of the divine ancestors.”
The goddess herself didn’t even tell me her name. So, this is the name I guessed on my own.
“Anna… Mother Goddess of the Divine Ancestor… Hmm, I’ve never heard of it.”
Mystia looks up at the sky and tilts her head.
“An elf who has lived longer than me might know. Or even a human might be able to understand the ancient documents of a country that has been around for a long time. The knowledge of the gods is scattered and disappears, isn’t it?”
“It’s the same world as the one I was in.”
“From God’s perspective, it’s a sad story. It’s like disappearing from the world.”
“that’s true”
I look at the statue and nod.
“This goddess, Anna, said that I was the last one. If we had sent out someone with more ambition, maybe more people would have gotten to know us.”
My hopes are small. I wonder if it was a good thing to be such a person.
“That’s right. Then I’m sure–“
Mystia said while staring at the statue.
“-She was a strong god, wasn’t she?”
“why?”
“Because I chose your kindness over ambition and fame.”
Mystia was smiling.
“I’m sure he’s been doing that all along. Even when things got tough at the very end, he didn’t give up on that pride.”
The last face the goddess made flashes in my mind. It was such a gentle smile that I couldn’t believe it was her last moment.
“That doesn’t mean she’s strong. She’s a strong and kind goddess.”
When I look back on that goddess, I think,
“I like that kind of thing.”
“…I think so too.”
The goddess said, “May you have a happy life.” If that’s what that goddess is and what she’s proud of.
If I’m thinking about unnecessary things, that’s probably unnecessary.
“The goddess must have liked someone like Soujiro. He has good taste.”
“I do not think so”
“Yeah”
After that, we didn’t exchange any words, and I just focused on carving the statue.
“This completes it.”
“Thank you for your hard work. You’re really good at it.”
It was a little embarrassing to be praised by Mystia who was sitting on the bed.
The quality is great thanks to the power of
Display it on a temporary Shinto altar and worship lightly. I don’t know if this is good etiquette in this world. Well, the details would be nice.
“Thank you for hanging out with me. I’m going to sleep now.”
“Then let’s turn down the light. It’ll go out after a while.”
Mystia stood up, bowed toward the altar, and saw me at the entrance to the hut.
“Good night Sojiro. Thank you for building me a house. Really.”
“Good night. We’re both good friends. I’m helping you too.”
The elf waved and left with Matsukaze.
Inside the dimly lit hut, I look up at the altar.
I want to eat delicious food in an environment where I can enjoy it.
It’s all thanks to the goddess who made my wish come true.
“Thank you, Goddess.”
Let’s go to bed soon.
Today was a dark day.
From tomorrow, let’s take our time and improve the tent site.
