Chapter 164- Take hit
The giant turtle hunched deeper into its shell, the ground beneath it fracturing from its sheer weight. Every strike only seemed to make the barrier harder, like the creature was mocking them by refusing to budge.
Lea spat dust from her mouth and cracked her knuckles, her grin sharp despite the frustration in her eyes. "Fine. You want to hide? Let's see how long that shell lasts."
Emma's flames coiled hotter around her arms, the air shimmering as heat waves rippled outward. "If brute force won't crack it, then we'll burn it until it cooks from the inside."
Fey shook her head, her eyes narrowing as her aura flared, her skill manifesting like a liquid wrapping around her body. "You two are too reckless. If we hit blindly, we'll only waste energy. We need to strike together."
Lea smirked, slamming her fists together with a thunderous crack. "Easy to say, strategist."
The ground vibrated as Emma's flames roared higher, sparks igniting around her. Fey closed her eyes, sensing the faintest movement inside the shell, waiting for that crucial instant.
"Now!" she shouted.
Lea launched forward, her fist slamming down with raw force, shaking the shell with a deafening boom. At that exact moment, Emma unleashed a concentrated inferno, flames piercing into the cracks forming under Lea's impact. Fey followed, slicing through the air, her liquid compressing the fire, forcing it deeper into the shell's weak points.
The mutant turtle screeched, a guttural, resonant sound, as smoke and fire hissed from the gaps. Its massive body trembled, the impenetrable shell showing its first visible fractures.
Lea grinned wildly. "Ha! Got you, you damn fortress!"
The cracks on the turtle's shell spread like spiderwebs, smoke rising as its muffled screeches echoed across the battlefield. For the first time, the creature looked shaken.
But then its body convulsed. A surge of energy rippled through its massive frame, and suddenly the shell snapped open. From within, a violent shockwave of force burst outward, shards of rock and energy scattering like shrapnel.
"Move!" Fey shouted, liquid spilling from her palms, spreading under her allies' feet like a slick current. In a blink, she manipulated the fluid to carry them out of the blast radius. Lea skidded across the ground with a curse, while Emma's flames flared up to shield her as she rolled into cover.
The spot they had just been standing on erupted into ruin, ground torn apart, fire and dust blasting skyward. The turtle roared, its glowing eyes scanning for them, furious that its shell had been breached.
Lea wiped the blood from her cheek and grinned. "Heh, ugly's finally mad. Perfect."
Emma rose to her feet, flames already building around her hands. "No more playing defense. We finish this."
Fey clenched her fists, the liquid around her body surging like a tide. It hardened into dense, high-pressure streams, swirling around her like whips. "Then we push together. Don't hold back."
Lea charged first, her fists glowing with raw power. She slammed into the turtle's front, pinning its attention. At the same time, Emma unleashed a concentrated blast of searing fire at its exposed neck, while Fey's liquid lashed forward, snaking into the weakened cracks of the shell, forcing pressure deep inside.
The creature screamed again, thrashing, its defense crumbling under the relentless assault. For the first time, the massive turtle staggered back.
Fey spread her arms wide, her liquid skill surging forward like a tidal wave. The shimmering mass coiled and solidified around the turtle's body, locking it in place. The creature roared and struggled, but every thrash only made the liquid cling tighter, wrapping it in an unyielding prison.
"Now!" Fey shouted.
Lea's eyes gleamed as her Stage 3 power burst awake. Her aura flared, raw energy radiating off her skin. With a growl, she lunged forward, fist crashing into the turtle's head with bone-shaking force. The ground quaked as the impact echoed, and before the beast could recover, Lea twisted her body, leaping with fluid grace. She spun midair and delivered a brutal kick right to the top of its shell, cracking it even further.
Emma was already waiting. Flames blazed to life around her, swelling into a searing inferno. With a sharp thrust of her palms, she released it all, a torrent of fire that engulfed the turtle's restrained body. The monster screeched, smoke and steam exploding around it.
But Fey wasn't done. She closed her eyes, liquid tendrils absorbing the heat from Emma's fire, glowing red-hot as they tightened around the turtle. The temperature spiked violently, boiling the creature inside its own shell. Then, with a flick of her wrist, Fey changed the composition, turning parts of her liquid into a corrosive purple acid that hissed and ate away at the turtle's armor.
The creature convulsed, shrieking in agony, but still it could not break free.
"Lea," Fey said firmly, her voice cutting through the chaos, "finish it."
Lea grinned, her fists tightening. "With pleasure."
She dashed forward, her aura blazing brighter than ever, and unleashed a devastating punch straight into the weakened shell. The impact detonated like a thunderclap, sending the massive turtle reeling backward, its enormous frame crashing to the ground with a thunderous quake.
Lea raised her right hand to her forehead, squinting as if trying to focus on something in the distance. A wry smile tugged at her lips. "That punch was so hard, it makes me wonder if I'm even a woman anymore."
"Stay sharp," Fey warned, her liquid shifting uneasily around her. "I'm not convinced that turtle's dead yet."
She was right. The ground trembled as the massive beast stirred, its cracked shell groaning under the strain. With a guttural roar, the turtle forced itself upright again, towering before them. The damage was clear, but it still stood, as if their combined assault had barely scratched its defenses.
Emma's eyes widened in disbelief. "No… that's impossible!"
The turtle bellowed again, louder this time, an ear-splitting roar that shook the battlefield. Blood oozed from its wounds, crawling back along its body, patching the cracks in its shell as it began to regenerate before their eyes.
"Don't let it recover!" Fey shouted urgently. "We have to hit it now before it heals!"
Lea cracked her knuckles, fire in her gaze. "Fine by me. I'll beat it to a pulp all over again!"
But before she could charge, a swarm of smaller mutant beasts began to pour in from every direction. Rats with glowing eyes, lizards with armored hides, and buzzing insects gathered at the turtle's side, surrounding it. They piled against its body, almost as if answering its roar, forming a living barrier to protect it while it regenerated.
Emma cursed under her breath, her flames sparking wildly around her hands. "This is bad…"
The swarm descended upon them like a living tide, claws, fangs, and stingers flashing in the chaos.
Fey extended both arms, her liquid surging outward in waves that wrapped around the smaller creatures. The substance twisted and lashed like whips, cutting through clusters of lizards and insects, but more kept coming, pouring in as if endless. Her brows furrowed. "There's too many of them, if I spread myself too thin, I'll lose control!"
"Then don't hold back!" Lea roared. She slammed her fists into the ground, the shockwave throwing several beasts into the air. Her Stage Three strength let her tear through the swarm, each punch pulverizing anything foolish enough to get close. She moved like a storm in the middle of the horde, but even her brutal blows weren't enough to thin their numbers completely.
Emma's flames blazed brighter, engulfing her arms as she spun and hurled arcs of fire into the horde. Screeches filled the air as dozens of creatures burned to ash, but the smell of scorched flesh only seemed to enrage the rest. Sweat dripped down her temple. "I can burn them all day, but this will drain me fast!"
"Then focus!" Fey snapped, her liquid snapping like serpents around her, striking creatures out of the air. "We just need to hold them back until the turtle weakens again!"
The swarm kept pressing, their bodies forming a living wall around the regenerating turtle. Lea leapt into the fray, her kick sending a beast flying into a group of others, scattering them. She grinned fiercely through the chaos. "Fine! If they want to protect that monster, they'll have to go through me first!"
Still, for every wave they cut down, more seemed to arrive, their sheer numbers buying the turtle precious seconds to heal. Fey's chest tightened as she realized the danger. "Damn it… if we don't break through soon, that thing will be back at full strength!"
Emma's eyes flared like coals. She didn't bother with subtlety. "I don't care anymore, I'll blow them all to hell," she said bluntly.
Fey's liquid rippled at the command, cautious. "That's insane. If you detonate that close, we'll get torn apart too."
Lea cracked her knuckles, grin feral. "Then don't stand in front of me. I'll take the hit." She pumped her fist once, energy humming up her arm, ready to be the anchor, the physical focus that would shape the blast's direction.
