Chapter 623: Battle for Shenzhen
Meanwhile, over in Shenzhen...
"What the hell is this thing?"
As two soldiers stood on top of a recently cleared building, they were a little stunned by the building in the distance.
It was all covered in red, with flesh running from the top to the bottom of the building, expanding and contracting as if it were alive.
"78th Squad, get ready to head back. Your nearby area is in the strike zone."
With the walkie-talkie's transmission going through, the senior soldier quickly took it out before answering back.
"Affirmative. We'll begin heading back."
Heading down the stairs, both of their mind was still fixated on what they had just witnessed.
They had never seen something like this. It just didn't make any sense to them how this was even possible.
"Hey, you two! Come here. We're about to leave."
As a man waved towards the two of them inside the car, they quickly ran over before hopping inside.
Driving down the road, it was empty, with no zombies other than a bunch of abandoned cars, some flipped over on the sidewalk.
"What were those red buildings?" The young soldier curiously asked.
"It's called a death zone... At least that's what my officer told me. I don't know anything else about it." The driver answered.
Just as the car was about to arrive back at the temporary base, the three of them could hear several loud bangs coming from within the base.
The ground even shook a little as the loud bang continued. Looking up, they could see a dot traveling up to the sky before vanishing.
"Finally, we can get lunch——"
"78th Squad, can you go to section number 346? We need someone to scout if the death zone building has collasped yet."
As the walkie-talkie opened transmission again, the senior officer let out a small sigh before looking over to the driver.
"Affirmative... Can you drive us back the streets earlier?"
"Sure."
After a few minutes of driving, the two of them exited the car and started going towards the tallest building near them.
Climbing through the hallway and the staircases, the two finally arrived at the top of an office building.
"What do you see?" The senior soldier asked as the young soldier took out a pair of binoculars to look through.
"Um... It looks like the same—Oh Shit!"
"What's wrong?"
"N-Nothing. I just got scared for a second... One of the artillery shells just landed at the building I was looking at."
"Did it blow up those red buildings?"
"No, it missed... Oh, here's another one."
After waiting for a few minutes, the two of them could both hear a loud explosion going off in the distance.
Through the binoculars, the young soldier could only see a bunch of dust until it settled down.
"How... The building is still there."
The senior officer quickly snatched the binoculars for himself, but what he saw next shocked him.
An artillery landed directly onto one of the buildings wrapped in red flesh, only to explode with barely any damage done.
Just a little bit of flesh fell to the ground below, with no signs of the red building collapsing any time soon.
"What are those things made out of? I need to report this."
As the senior soldier took out his walkie-talkie to report what he had witnessed, the young soldier took back the binoculars to have a look himself again.
"We clearly need something more explosive, or something that catches on fire..."
The young soldier murmured as he watched another round of artillery shells land onto the building, only to once again scratch the surface.
---
"Commander Yiming, the building is still there."
As a Colonel entered the HQ tent and reported the news out loud, Yiming and the other two Colonels froze in place before snapping back to reality.
"This is not good... How about Plan B? Zhen Ren, how did that one go?" Yiming calmly asked.
"12th Platoon still hasn't sent any messages since they drove into the death zone... They most likely had failed."
"Pause Plan C and Plan D. Don't waste any more soldiers trying to get inside."
"Yes, sir."
As Zhen Ren quickly walked out of the tent, the two Colonels could feel the cold look on Yiming's face.
Everyone in the army at this point knew the problem ahead of them. Something that they had no solution for.
"I'll go check if the scientist has arrived here yet."
"Wait, Li Qing, I need you to send a small team to extract a small sample of flesh from the death zone."
"Yes, sir."
With the other Colonel leaving, only one other officer remained in the HQ tent next to Yiming.
"Commander... Should we report this back to the command center?"
"Not yet... Yan Lin, keep all of this information sealed and cancel all approved leave for all soldiers next week."
"Yes, sir."
As Yiming stood alone in the tent, he looked down at the sandbox in front of him. He could see he had practically circled all of Shenzhen.
Every entrance and every building was cleared, except for a red circle west of the city that he now discovered.
"How do I get rid of this... No, that can't work. We don't even have that kind of weapon."
For a split second, a dangerous idea popped into his mind. One that requires an ultimate weapon that they don't have.
"How are they dealing with this in the north?" Yiming wondered as a flashback suddenly popped up in his head.
---
As the shell came to a stop, the two soldier on top of the office building put down their binocular as both looked a little disappointed.
The plan had clearly failed as their walkie-talkie opened transmission to ask them to head back to base.
Getting back downstairs and into the car, they could see soldiers nearby all going back to base with the same disappointed look.
Everyone in the army knew today's plan had failed. Whatever progress they had made was all going to disappear.
How do they know that? Because a few of them already tried shooting RPGs up close at one of the buildings in the death zone.
The building's flesh just repairs itself after the night, with more and more zombies flooding out and forcing some of them to stay up late.
"When is this stupid fighting going to end?" The young soldier murmured as they finally arrived back at the base.
"No clue... But I'm sure the higher-ups have a plan."
"I really hope so."
As the two of them headed towards their tent, they were a little surprised to see their fellow squadmate there.
"Hey Zhangfan, aren't you approved to head back home for the week?" The senior soldier curiously asked.
"It got cancelled. Everyone's leave approval got cancelled." Zhangfan responded as he loaded one last bullet into his spare magazine.
The two of them quickly realized how severe the situation might be, as they hadn't seen leave approval being cancelled before.
"Has Captain Lin come back and say anything yet?" The young soldier asked.
"No. He's busy meeting with the Lieutenant right now. You two should get some sleep soon before night duty."
"Thanks."
---
As nighttime arrived, gunshots could be heard throughout the city as zombies started flooding out of the death zone.
"Have the scientists arrived yet?"
Yiming asked as he sat in his chair, with a young officer standing right by the entrance with a notebook.
"They are currently meeting with Li Qing to arrange some operation tomorrow... Should I call them over to meet up with you?"
"No need..."
As Yiming looked back towards the sandbox in front of him, his mind suddenly started having a weird feeling.
The more he sat there with nothing much to do, the more worried he felt. For some reason, he just feels like something is going to go wrong tonight.
"Commander... You should go to sleep now. We still need you tomorrow morning."
After thinking for a bit, Yiming finally got up from his seat, walking over to the exit as he patted the young officer's shoulder.
"Wake me up if one of the colonels reports an emergency."
"Yes, sir!"
Walking underneath the moonlight, Yiming could hear gunshots in the distance, right near the Shenzhen entrances.
In his head, he could already imagine the zombies flooding out of the death zone as the soldiers in the nearby buildings shot them down.
"Why would the drones not work in the death zone?" Yiming wondered as he felt helpless with the lack of information against this weird anomaly.
Entering his tent, Yiming quickly took off his boots before sitting down on his sleeping bag.
His mind still felt a little worried, but his body was getting tired. Unable to resist the drowsiness, he got into his sleepbag and leaned down.
"I need a new plan tomorrow... What could I possibly do that's different? Why do I have that I haven't used yet?"
