Chapter 594: Deal breaker
"I see no point in further discussion... I hope you know this is going to be the best deal you could get."
As Xiaoyun left an ominous message, Lingang quickly waved goodbye to Chengyi before leaving alongside him.
"Dad... Did we really have to irritate them like this?"
"You don't understand."
Neither Chengyi nor Pinli spoke up as Wu Min looked out the window, his face seemingly to have aged several years as he looked a little exhausted.
---
"Commander, are we really going to go home without a deal?" Lingang curiously asked as they exited the building.
"What else do you think we're going to get staying there?"
Lingang awkwardly scratched his head. He felt the need to say something, but he didn't know what to say.
"Time to head back home... Lingang, what did you learn today?" Xiaoyun suddenly asked as they got inside their car.
"Um... Deals are hard to make?"
"Anything else?"
"I don't know, sir."
After starting up the car, Xiaoyun quickly pulled out of the roadside before hitting the road.
"You really are born to be a good soldier... Don't worry about it anymore."
---
As Chengyi and Pinli both left the office, Wu Min took out his phone before dialing some numbers.
"Good morning, Mister Wu Min, who would you like to call today?"
"Can you dial Zhongxiong's number?"
"Coming right up... Doo... Doo..."
The waiting sound soon ended as an old man's voice appeared from the other side of the call.
"Hello?"
"I did what you asked." Wu Min murmured.
"Great... You did your job perfectly. Enjoy the rest of your mayorship."
"I don't want to be the mayor. You know that." Wu Min argued with a hint of anger.
"Of course. But I don't have anyone else to put in charge. You're the only person I trust in this position."
Wu Min's anger dissipated for a second before it resurfaced again as the old man's voice echoed in his head.
"Oh, almost forgot. Your daughter's pill is running out soon. The supplies are running thin again."
"What more do you want from me? I already did everything you wanted."
"I'm just giving you a heads-up, that's all... It's going to be a while before a salvage team can find a pill for such a rare disease."
"If anything goes wrong with my daughter, you're dead, Zhongxiong."
As Wu Min hung up the phone call abruptly, he let out a sigh as his eyes looked towards a picture frame.
A middle-aged man who looked similar to Wu Min in a business suit. Right next to it was a modestly dressed woman holding the hands of a boy and a girl.
---
"Another long drive back home..." Xiaoyun murmured as he floored the gas pedal on the highway.
"Commander, I can drive if you want." Lingang offered.
"I'm good."
The scenery remained the same as they sped down the road, followed by several other armored cars right behind.
Everything seemed to be going as planned until the two of them suddenly noticed a small black dot in the distance.
"Lingang, can you check what's that in the distance?"
Lingang quickly took out his binoculars, looking straight at the black dot before giving Xiaoyun a shocking answer.
"A zombie horde is there. They seem to be gathering up to head towards somewhere up North."
"Time for a detour, then."
Xiaoyun quickly took the next exit available, going towards Zhuzhou instead of Xiangtan as he drove around the outskirts of the city.
---
After driving for six hours straight, the two of them finally let out a sigh of relief as Shaoguan approached in the distance.
"Thank god there was a gas station in that store earlier..."
Lingang murmured as their entire convoy almost got stranded out in the middle of nowhere in Hunan.
"Yeah."
Xiaoyun didn't say anything as he was the one who made the gas can at the back of the storage room when they entered the gas station.
"Can't believe people are just trying to go down here on foot sometimes. How could Mister Wu Min be so heartless?"
"You read the newspaper?" Xiaoyun curiously asked.
"I read the Luoping Daily every day. I even got the 2nd special edition early the day before... Commander, you've got to read the newest edition, too, right?"
"Of course."
A drop of sweat fell from Xiaoyun's forehead as he had only read the 1st edition. He didn't even know there was a second edition already in circulation.
"Like, walking from Hengyang to Shaoguan. That is such an impressive journey without being caught by the zombie hordes wandering around."
"Mhm... Certainly impressive."
"But, Commander, if we go back home without a deal, what are we going to do for our fellow countrymen who just want a better life coming from the north?"
As Lingang asked the question, Xiaoyun instantly came up with an answer prepared.
"We're just going to do it ourselves... I never expected them to agree to it anyway. This was just more of a gamble."
---
After making a short pitstop at Shaoguan and continuing the journey towards Qingyuan, he was surprised to see a little traffic building up on the right side of the road.
Someone was holding up the civilian side of the city entrance—a person whom he never expected to see at the entrance of Qingyuan.
"Can I not get this machine through? This is a critical component that I need to transport back to Luoping."
Anna and several other middle-aged men were standing right before two police guards, who seemed to have pulled her caravan of cars over to the side of the road.
"Madam, I told you, your trucks are way over-capacitated. It's going to crush the city roads. You need to drive around the outskirts."
"I already drove around the outskirts. They told me the roads there are being repaired right now and are blocked off."
"Then I'm afraid you just have to wait."
"Wait? You know how long they told me it's going to be done by? One week! I don't have time to wait for a week."
"Rules are rules, madam. No exceptions."
As the two police officers refused to budge, several of the men inside their cars, waiting, were starting to get a little rowdy.
"Just let them through! There's no way for her to U-turn here!" A middle-aged man in the car yelled out loud.
"I'm going to be late for the surgery! Move out of the way already!"
"Officer, please. I'm willing to pay for the road repair once I drive through Qingyuan. Here's my business card."
"Sorry. No exceptions." The officer on the left instantly answered, rejecting the card from Anna.
"Yanfei, just let them through. The traffic jam is only getting worse every second." The officer on the right advised.
As the buses started to beat their horns, the officer on the left remained firm in his decision.
"The damaged road could delay the possible transport of troops. I'm afraid I cannot let you through... Please, take the detour."
"Fine."
Just as Anna was seemingly about to give up, Xiaoyun finally decided to exit the car as he walked towards the crowds of people.
"No need for detour. You two, what's your name?"
"Who are you——"
"M-Mister Governor! Good evening!"
As the police officer on the right immediately saluted towards Xiaoyun, the left officer quickly realized who the person was.
"Mr.Governor, rules are rules. I'm afraid I cannot give an exemption."
"Not if I grant them as military vehicles... Anna, go tell your men to drive your cards towards the other empty lane over there."
The two police officers watched as Anna headed back to her group of caravans before the trucks began to drive towards the wide, empty lane on the left side of the road.
"Yanfei, right?" Xiaoyun asked, looking towards the left police officer who had held up the line in the first place.
"Yes, sir."
"If you read the business card for once, you would have realized she's a military contractor, do you understand that?"
"I do not know that, sir."
"Then be aware of it next time. Don't act as the court judge when you're only a traffic officer."
"I told you, you should have just let them through."
As Xiaoyun headed back into his car, he suddenly noticed someone sitting in the passenger seat.
It was no one other than Anna. Sitting there with her seatbelt attached and everything, waiting for him to drive the car.
"Why are you here? Aren't you supposed to be back in the trucks with your men?" Xiaoyun curiously asked.
"I don't want to sit next to a bunch of sweaty engineers. You're driving back to Luoping anyway, right?"
"You aren't wrong... Just don't regret it."
"What do you mean——Woah!"
As soon as Anna asked her the question, the car suddenly jumped up into the air for a whole millisecond before crashing down.
"There's a reason why most of the army goes around the outskirts rather than using this designated road."
"How am I supposed to know that? S-Slow down! You're scaring the bejesus out of me."
