Zombie Apocalypse: Creation

Chapter 590: Work-Life Balance

"And then what about our work? Are we quitting to become full-time Moms like Le... Mom?"

Nami quickly changed her words at the very last second as she almost accidentally said out of her mind.

"Not that..."

"You're just worrying over nothing. Come on, bring out the breakfast. I don't want to be late for work."

"Maybe you're right..."

As Yuqi carried two bowls of noodles down onto the table, others began entering the kitchen one by one as they all woke up for breakfast.

"Morning."

"Morning Wuli, Morning Shuli... Breakfast is in the pot."

"You cooked breakfast today? What a crazy day."

Wuli jokingly commented as she walked towards the stove before getting a bowl of noodles from the pot.

"Yuqi, is there something on your mind?" Shuli asked, noticing the worried look on her face.

"I'm fine."

"She's thinking about whether or not we need to quit our jobs to spend more time with our babies."

"That's not what I said, Nami."

"Yuqi said that out of all people? Did I really hear that right? The woman who didn't come down yesterday because of work?"

Seeing Wuli walking back with two bowls of noodles in the same joking manner, Yuqi stared at her with a full, serious face.

"Okay, okay. I didn't mean to say it that way... But you're actually serious? Are you actually thinking of leaving your job?"

Wuli curiously asked as she took a seat next to Shuli, handing her a bowl of noodles before picking up the chopsticks.

"No. I'm not quitting my job. At least not in such urgent times... I just said I feel like we barely spend any time with our babies."

Both Shuli and Wuli fell into silence.

They sat still with their chopstick in the air. Their minds were trying to think back to the last time they properly spent time taking care of their kid.

"We always push the dirty work onto Mom... Are the babies even going to think of us as their actual mother?"

This time, the entire table fell into silence. Even Nami froze in place as if everyone was seriously thinking about Yuqi's point.

"Morning, everyone... Um, why are you all looking frozen? Hello?"

As Tianci entered the kitchen, she was a little confused to see them sitting, staring at the air despite having the food right in front of them.

She tried to wave her hand in front of Nami, only to have her instantly put it aside before snapping back to reality.

"Yuqi, you're right. We can't have that happen... Sooner or later, all of our babies are only going to call Mom mommy."

"What are you guys on about?"

Tianci curiously asked, taking a seat next to Nami. Her mind still does not understand a single thing that's happening at the kitchen table.

"But we can't quit our jobs. That's unthinkable." Wuli argued as she finally snapped out of her thought bubble.

"We don't have to quit our job... I was just thinking of spending more time with the baby. Like on the weekend and after work."

"Good idea."

Shuli murmured as both Wuli and Nami nodded in agreement with Yuqi's thinking process, reaching a common understanding between the four of them.

"I'm so confused..."

"You don't have to worry about it yet. You'll know it soon in a few months... Oh, the breakfast is at the stove."

"A few months?"

As Tianci fell into deep thoughts, walking towards the pot, Yuqi instantly shifted her attention back to the three of them.

"What do you guys think of this? How about we spend the next few weekends all at home?"

"Isn't that what we do almost every weekend now?" Nami questioned.

"Without entertainment. We're just going to be next to our babies and play with whatever they want the entire day."

Both Wuli and Shuli didn't object to the idea, but Nami still looked a little annoyed by the plan.

"That sounds so boring..."

"If you think it's boring, then you can have Xuanhua call you as Mom and Leyan as Mommy."

"Hell no!"

As Nami rejected Yuqi's prediction, Tianci finally came back from the stove with a bowl of noodles.

Her face was flushed red as she took a seat next to Nami again. She had finally realized what Yuqi was talking about earlier.

"Hey Tianci, are you free this weekend?" Yuqi curiously asked.

"I-I might need to work at the lab. I have a few projects that need me." Tianci instantly replied as she went back to eating noodles.

"That's a shame... I was thinking of having Mom teach you about labor preparation——"

"What labor preparation are you guys talking about?"

The moment Kate entered the room, Tianci immediately started blinking rapidly as if she wanted Yuqi to keep it off.

"Just some work stuff... You okay? Your eyes look a little..."

"I know, I know. I just slept late yesterday... Is Yueyue or Leyan awake yet?" Kate curiously asked as she took a seat next to Tianci.

"Leyan is in the guest rooms right now. I don't know about Yueyue... Hey Nami, how's Lily not awake yet?"

"She went to school already. She has a morning self-study session now." Nami explained as she finished up her breakfast.

"Morning self-study session? What's that?" Kate murmured as she began walking off into the kitchen to get her breakfast.

"I never heard of her going to that," Shuli commented as she thought back to her time in school.

"Don't ask me. She just decided to go... Wait, aren't you her teacher?" Nami instantly flipped the question back to her.

"Hey, I'm not the teacher. I'm actually the principal. And I can't spend time on her when I need to talk with teachers about the end-of-year exam."

"End of the year exams? When did that exist again?"

As Leyan came out of the guest hallway, Nami immediately got up from her seat and ran out of the kitchen.

"Sorry, got to go!"

"Didn't even put her bowls away... Anyway, Shuli, what do you mean by end-of-the-year exam?"

"Just a last-minute exam to make sure we can accurately measure every student's capability... It shouldn't affect their future."

"That's good, that's good..." Leyan murmured to herself.

"Speaking of end-of-the-year exams, usually the second week of June is when we have Gaokao, isn't it?"

"What's Gaokao?" Kate curiously asked as she came back with two bowls of noodles before putting one down for Leyan.

"Thank you."

"Gaokao is our national college entrance exam... It's like your SAT or ACT but a lot harder." Shuli explained.

"Oh god... I can't imagine it being harder. Is that thing still here?"

Kate nervously asked, her face looking a little scared as if it had triggered some bad memories.

"Not anymore... The professors couldn't agree on an exam that would be the right difficulty for the students." Shuli explained.

"That's no good. We need this exam to filter out those who need education and those who should just go straight to the factories."

"Hey, that's uncalled for. Don't make it sound like manual work is bad work." Wuli argued, her tone filled with a hint of anger as if she was upset by Yuqi's words.

"Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude... But there's no point in having students in new colleges when they can be in the workforce."

"We are already planning to have the professor interview the students after the teacher gave a list of students who excelled at their studies as a temporary measure."

"Good."

As the table fell into a brief silence, Yueyue finally arrived in the kitchen. Her eyes were full of dark circles, looking almost just like Kate's.

"Yueyue, you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine... Just couldn't sleep last night." Yueyue replied as she let out a small yawn before taking a seat.

"Two people who can't sleep last night... You two weren't up to some funny business, right?" Wuli questioned.

"Of course not!"

As soon as Yueyue and Kate answered at the same time, everyone at the table immediately knew something was off.

"Mom can be my alibi. The two of us ran into each other at the bathroom stalls." Yueyue argued.

With Leyan nodding, the suspicion instantly landed on Kate's court. But she only shrugged her shoulders as if she didn't need any explanation.

"I just slept late. I was on my phone in my room. What more can I say?"

"Whatever... Oh snap, it's almost ten, I need to go to work now."

As Shuli and Tianci both got up and left the kitchen, Leyan quickly noticed the number of people still at the table.

"You guys don't have work today?"

"I can go to work at any time I want... The soldiers are going to train themselves anyway." Wuli responded as she grabbed a small piece of toast.

"I'm just going in later today... Hey Mom, do you have time on the weekend? I just want to talk to you for a bit."

"Sure."
