Chapter 66: The Regenerating Horror
"We are about to be overwhelmed!" Ivan yelled, as he kicked away a zombie with a powerful heel stomp.
He raced past Jiggy, reaching Door-Knob's corner first. His swift, bombarding intervention immediately freed the burly man from his perilous suppression.
"Everyone should get to an advantageous position. The top of buildings would be ideal," Ivan instructed.
Door-Knob was the quickest to scale a nearby building and reach its summit. The special characters individually positioned themselves atop separate buildings. The ground and surrounding structures shook violently under the thunderous, rushing arrival of a horde of over three hundred zombies.
The texture of Door-Knob's bazooka barrel visibly changed. Intricate, overlapping layers appeared on the weapon, transforming its monotonous silver colour to a striking mix of silver and dark green. A glowing red rocket was loaded onto the weapon. The rocket seemed to draw in the surrounding light, which vanished upon reaching its tip, akin to a miniature black hole.
The monsters poured onto the street mindlessly. Door-Knob unleashed his attack. A huge cloud of temporal flames and acrid smoke erupted, carrying the grim scent of roasted meat. He couldn't immediately follow up the attack with another; he had just employed a special attack and had to wait for forty seconds for another red rocket to form on the bazooka.
From the thick cloud of smoke that obscured the scene on the street below, a single ripper zombie launched itself with terrifying speed towards Door-Knob. He leapt nimbly to the side and powerfully whacked the monster with his exaggerated RPG barrel, splitting the creature's head like a 20mm bullet ramming through a watermelon.
A dozen more monsters launched themselves onto the rooftop. Door-Knob was forced to leap off this precarious vantage point. Mid-air, he momentarily considered firing the fully formed rocket at the monsters on the roof, but he decided against it.
'There could be someone hiding on this building,' Door-Knob reminded himself.
He landed on the next rooftop. The smoke on the street below had somewhat cleared, and visibility was now manageable.
BOOM! The street shook once more under the violent impact of Door-Knob's rocket.
Ivan and Jiggy were equally engaged. Monsters had also launched themselves at them. Jiggy, being an expert swordsman, dealt with the string of monsters and then leapt over to the roof that Door-Knob had just vacated. As he swiftly closed in, he meticulously calculated his next moves. One zombie decided to attack him. SLASH! The monster's lifeless corpse fell to the street below.
He slid to a stop on the roof and then expertly weaved his way through the remaining monsters. With three measured moves, he efficiently took down all the creatures on the roof.
Ivan wasn't having an easy time. Monsters kept relentlessly coming at him. He was being overwhelmed. He felt the feracious bites and clawing attacks on his body. Had he not been wearing his formidable armour, he would have suffered numerous grievous injuries.
Plop! Plop! Plop! Blurp! Ivan was forced to brutally crush heads. He desperately reached around, grabbing monsters' heads and popping them with his bare hands. Blood flowed like a shallow stream across this rooftop. He managed to find a small space, and once more drew Black Riot from its sheath. He wildly slashed wide from right to left, cleaving monsters in half in the path of his blade. His wild, rotational momentum threw away the monsters that had mounted his back.
Freed from the relentless suppression, he launched a furious offensive against the monsters. He attacked with a devastating combination of stomp kicks, overhead kicks, roundhouse kicks, drop kicks, and erratic sword slashes. He was like a psychotic serial killer granted a sword to survive a zombie apocalypse.
He was down to one final zombie. The zombie climbed upon his back, grappling tightly onto his neck and continuously biting down. Ivan reached over with his arms, grabbing onto the zombie's tattered shirt and shoulder. He pulled the zombie over his head, bringing it before him. He quickly followed up with a brutal overhead suplex slam, squashing the head and breaking the zombie's spine, simultaneously leaving a noticeable dent in the flat concrete rooftop.
Absolutely brutal! Blood dripped from Ivan's now stained armour.
A third red rocket violently struck the street, and a powerful explosion shook the entire area. Ivan had caught a brief glimpse of the rocket's trajectory. Thick smoke once again clouded the street. Wind then blew through the street, clearing a significant amount of the smoke. Ivan gazed intently at the point where the rocket had hit. It was as he had guessed; Door-Knob had targeted the giant polymastic zombie.
The explosion completely shredded the zombie to naught. Suddenly, more than a dozen freshly zombified human beings emerged from the buildings around the shredded zombie corpse. These zombified victims then began to melt into viscous puddles, one after the other. With each victim melting, the body of the shredded polymastic zombie meticulously reconstructed, bit by bit, until completion. A few victims were spared from melting after the zombie's body completed its horrifying reconstruction.
"Die!" Door-Knob fired the fourth red rocket at the monstrous creature. He turned visibly pale; the formation of the red rockets was clearly taking a heavy toll on his vitality and stamina.
Unfortunately, the giant zombie knocked away the rocket with its exaggerated left arm. The missile violently collided into a building on the monster's left side. The ensuing explosion brought the entire building crashing down to rubble.
The monster raised its massive head, locking eyes with Door-Knob.
"Ahh!" Door-Knob yelled as he leapt off the roof, acting on the urgent warning prompt from his danger instincts.
The rooftop he had just vacated cracked and rumbled into ruin. The giant zombie had barrelled itself into the roof in a desperate bid to exterminate Door-Knob.
Door-Knob's trajectory led him to crash violently into an apartment through a window. He quickly got back on his feet.
"Growl!" A zombified human being slowly staggered towards him. He whacked open the zombie's head with his barrel. Then, he dived to the side, narrowly dodging another bulldozing attack from the giant zombie. The attack severely compromised the integrity of this apartment's floor. This was the tenth floor of a seventeen-floor building.
The giant zombie and the now weakened floor fell onto the ninth floor. Door-Knob barely held onto the edge of the remnant tenth floor. The impact from the crashing floor and the Zombie's immense weight broke through the ninth floor. The zombie then fell onto the eighth floor. The shockwaves from the second crash violently shook Door-Knob's grip, and he descended through the gaping floor below.
Meanwhile, Jiggy and Ivan rapidly descended from their respective positions, rushing to aid Door-Knob in escaping the relentless fury of the giant zombie.
Ivan and Jiggy suspected that the giant zombie's overall strength could be ranked as an Honoured Bronze rank.
