Chapter 14: Fourteen
"We can still talk." He picked a little dried leaf from my hair, must have fallen from a tree while we walked here.
"Thanks." I smiled. "I should go." Why did I say that?!! I was getting too nervous now.
"Oh. Okay. I actually have to do something for my dad, it's why I came back." He said scratching the back of his neck again.
I started to walk in, I was mad about what I just said and did, now I had to go in. I didn't even have anything to do when I got inside. When I got to the porch, I took the keys from under the plant pot, Nick said they will be there.
Once I was inside, I stood behind the door and took in a long deep breath. Taking off my school bag, I tossed it on the small sofa in the living room, going directly to the window to see if he was gone. He was heading to the door, I didn't know why. I quickly shut the curtains and waited for him to knock.
"I think this is yours." He was holding a folded sheet. I looked at it for a while before realizing it was my test paper. Oh no, it had fallen from my pocket, must have been when I put my hands in my pocket.
"I don't think so." I shook my head hoping he would just toss it away immediately.
"It has your name on it." He showed it to me.
"Oh yeah." I feigned surprise, taking it from him, screaming in my thoughts.
"If you want I could give you math lessons." I heard him say.
"Me?"
"There's no one else here?" He smiled.
"Yeah, you should totally give me math lessons, I mean you are very smart." I praised him hoping I didn't sound too awkward.
"Ok, you can text me when you will be free, maybe weekends." He said still smiling."I should go now, bye." He walked away before I could say bye too so I just raised my hands and did a small wave.
When I got upstairs, I quickly unlocked my phone to check through my messages. I saw it almost immediately I went to the app. There was just one HI message from the unsaved number, it had to be him.
'Hi👋" The number sent again, he must have noticed I was online.
'I thought you had to do something.' I texted.
'Yes, through my laptop.'
'Just to be sure, this is Uche right?'
'😂😂'
'Yeah, it is.'
I smiled when I saw his message, deciding to save the number before I forgot.
'Am I distracting you?'
'Yes, but I don't mind.' I smiled at his text again.
'About the math lesson you offered to give me, tommorow sounds okay.'' He didn't reply immediately and I was just sitting on the bed waiting.
' It's Saturday, so it sounds just okay.' I added but he still didn't reply so I kept the phone down and took off my shoes and jacket.
After that, I checked and he still hadn't replied, he had gone offline. I sighed plugging in my phone's charger and going offline myself. My phone's notification sound beeped almost immediately, making me go back to my phone.
'Have you eaten yet?' It was a text but it wasn't Uche, it was Nick. I hissed, plugging in my phone again but he called.
"What?" I asked him.
"Did you eat yet?"
"No?"
"Why not?" He questioned.
"What do you care?"
"Right, I don't, I just wanna know you plan on eating, I don't want the whole thing with my yesterday repeating itself." He explained, sounding as unpleased as I was about this call.
"I haven't eaten yet but I will, don't call me."
"please, I beg you, don't forget to eat."
"I'm hanging up." I told him about to actually do so. When I hung up, I checked but Uche still wasn't back online so I dropped it like before.
I decided to shower and changed into my night clothes even if it was just around five pm or so. I didn't feel like eating, even though I was hungry, I also didn't feel like doing my homework even though I knew I might forget to do them later. I didn't really feel like doing anything rather than just laying in bed.
When I woke up, it was darker outside. I had fallen asleep while laying lazily In bed. I wondered if my aunt was back yet. I went outside my room to check and every where was quiet.
My aunt definitely wasn't back because if she was then everywhere won't be this quiet, it was like when I was always alone with mum at home, very quiet.
I wondered if Nick was home too, I had returned the house keys back where I got them from after I opened the door earlier.
"Nick?!" I banged on his room door but he didn't answer even after I kept on calling, I opened his room's door and his room looked more arranged than the other day, but he wasn't there.
I went back to my room and got my phone, it was late for him not to be back, not too late but it got me worried. I tried calling Nick but his phone just rang without him picking up.
I looked through my window hoping to see Uche he would surely know, maybe Nick was there. His lights were turned off, so I couldn't tell if he was there.
It suddenly occured to me that I had his number too, so I dialed him and he picked up almost immediately.
"Julie?" He called before I could say anything over the phone.
"I was just about to call you, please come open your front door and hurry."
"What?"
"Hurry, before your aunt gets home, Nick would be in so much trouble." He said again, sounding like he was tugging something heavy.
Without thinking and without hanging up, I quickly ran downstairs and looked through the window there. Uche was holding Nick, so I quickly opened the door. I watched him dragged Nick inside, making me wonder what was wrong with Nick.
"Is he okay?"
