Chapter 11: Eleven
I was squatting to take out books from my locker when I heard someone.
"Heyy Julie."
I looked up and it was Casey. She squatted next to me but I got up, I didn't want her company.
"So..." She got up too.
"Casey, stop." I thought I should stop her before she assumed I was accepting her friendship."Look, I know you've been nice to me but I don't..... I'm not in on friendships." I said to her as simple as I could.
"Oh."
"Yeah." I nodded. "But we can still talk once in a while, I mean we are seating next to each other in class, we have to."
"Okay." She just said smiling dryly till she left.
"Heyy." I heard someone behind me, I turned to know who it was and it was Kim, the boy whose basement we had hung out the other day.
I didn't say anything, I didn't want to start a conversation with him, so I just raised my right eyebrow in a way it asked 'what do you want.'
"You remember me right?" He asked.
"Yeah, Kim."
"Okay....I just wanted to tell you that our teacher would be giving us an impromptu test today."
"And.....?"
"Nothing else. I'm letting you know, so you could go through your notes before the test."
"Okay thanks." I said about to walk away, before our talk got any longer.
"Do you need my note?"
"N..." He stopped me from saying no.
"...My math note, I mean you joined us midterm, so you don't have most of the things we have learnt so far this term."
"No, I don't need your note, thanks though." I said as calmly as I could but if he stopped me again, I might just switch to very rude Julie.
"Are you sure?" He asked and I knew I was done standing there with him and I just began walking to class.
After our English period, the teacher had this smile on his face while changing the subject written on the board to mathematics in capital letters.
My mind went back to what Kim had said earlier. The test; it had to be what was the cause for our teacher's smile. I smiled in place of laughter, I knew I couldn't laugh in class right now but it was funny that he thought no one knew he was about to give the class a surprise test, I could bet the whole class knew.
Using the marker again he added test in capitals also to the already written mathematics on the white board. Some persons began to mumble like they were surprised, I guess I was wrong became not everybody knew.
"Julie." I heard Casey whisper my name. I looked at her with disinterest hoping she would stop talking but she went on. "Did you know about the test?"
"Why? You didn't know?" I replied with a question not wanting to give a direct answer.
"I did. I was gonna tell you earlier this morning when we were at your locker but you said....."
"Thanks." I said because I didn't want her to repeat what I told her this morning, I didn't want to feel bad about it.
"Quiet! All of you, quiet." Mr Ralph said out loud, making the chorused mumbling stop. "Take out a sheet and just your pen, I want nothing else on your table."
He started to walk in between the spaces that separated our seats and rows, holding some papers in his hands..
I took out my sheet and laid it next to my pen on the desk. I looked over at Uche, he had done same and was just tapping his fingers on the desk without making any audible sounds. He looked relaxed.
"Julie." I heard my name again and it wasn't Casey, It was Mr Ralph."You can sit this one out."
"I want to write."
"It's not the main test, just to see if they've been reading, besides what are you going to write, you weren't here when I taught the rest of the class some of the topics I'm gonna be setting my questions from."
"I'll write anything."
"You are sure you want to write?" He asked again and I was pretty sure everyone's attention was on me, why did he have to start this.
"I used to go to a school before coming here and the state uses the same scheme for students, so I'm sure."
"Alright, your choice." He agreed, placing a question paper on my desk and then Casey's.
He started to distribute papers to everyone, row by row. We weren't permitted to start till he( Mr Ralph) had distributed the questions to everyone's desk, so I looked at Uche again, he was still tapping his fingers.
He suddenly looked in my direction and I quickly looked back at my desk. I could feel my face heat up, I just hoped my cheeks weren't pink. I think he just caught me looking at him, I hope he didn't think of me as weird.
I looked back at him but his head was still turned to where I sat, it was like he was waiting for me to look at him again so he could catch me red handed.
He smiled looking back at his paper. I found myself smiling too. Mr Ralph walked back to the front of the class.
"Alright, you can all start now." He said taking his seat.
I looked at the questions laying in front of me and they made my smile disappear, maybe I should have listened to the teacher. Maybe I should have agreed not to write this test.
Not all the questions looked hard to solve, just a majority of them but not all, at least I could attempt some, math wasn't really my thing.
