Chapter 443: Water
I looked at the clock, and it was already going to be seven soon, so I would have to cook soon. Now that I think about it, we don't have many groceries. Well, this is going to take longer than expected.
I walked towards the couch where the two were sitting chatting for a long while with a movie playing on the television. It was pretty refreshing seeing Akira in our house for a much longer time and just having fun. After everything that happened, Ai was stubborn about having Akira stay with us today. No matter how much Akira was against this idea, once Ai had decided on something, there was no way to convince her, and I wasn't even against her proposal.
"But I think Kazuki-sama and Ai-sama would be needing their personal time," Akira said, trying her best to convince Ai, but she failed.
"I will have that too, it's not like I am letting Kazu-kun leave this place," she said, holding onto both of our arms.
"Please stay, Akira," I requested, and she let out a sigh before agreeing to our request.
I really liked the idea of her staying because Ai's mood was great, and just seeing her interacting and getting close to more people I know I can trust is just great to see. Also, after the fact that Akira broke down before us, I was not too keen on letting her just leave. I could feel us getting closer to her, but I still kept this distance that she created as if shielding one of the parties from something horrible. I don't really know much about her past, but I can guess it has a big role to play in this behaviour of hers.
"We are out of groceries," I announced to the two who turned their heads looking at me. "Who is ready for grocery shopping?"
"Oh! That means we can stock up on snacks!" Ai said with sparkles in her eyes; however, Akira looked more unsure about this proposal.
"Kazuki-sama, it has gotten pretty late. Are you sure going outside at such a time will be wise?" She framed her question in the most respectful way possible.
"Well, we won't be walking there, so I don't really mind," I said, and both of them tilted their head in confusion. After a few seconds, both their eyes widened, and Ai looked at Akira with excitement on her face.
"Good thing you both catch on quick. Get ready to head out," I said, walking to the shoe rack to get my outdoor shoes.
Ai followed me happily, and Akira did the same, still looking unsure about this. Now that I think about it, does she even have outdoor shoes? All I've normally seen her in are her black leather shoes and sometimes indoor sandals.
"Worry not, Kazuki-sama, I have some outdoor shoes too," Akira said, holding her black shoes in her hands. When did she? "Since I know there is no convincing you both, I got them when you both were changing."
"Do you know where the grocery store is?" I asked her since we haven't really gone there with her.
"Yes, I do, Kazuki-sama. Whenever you both leave the apartment, I am constantly monitoring your location. I have also memorized every single street and building within a one-kilometre radius around us," she explained and looked quite proud about it. "Things like these are not hard when you don't have too much work on you."
"I'm so glad you are on our side," I said, and Ai nodded, agreeing with me. "So, shall we?"
As I said that, we were already teleported right next to the grocery store. I looked around, and luckily, there weren't a lot of people around, so it didn't look like it would have too much suspicion. We walked into the store, and the bright light shone on all our faces. I went to the dairy section first since we were out of cheese, milk, butter, and yogurt. Ai was in charge of getting the snacks and vegetables. She quite loved her job, and seeing her always come back with a mountain of snacks is quite the adorable sight. However, it always gets reduced to a tenth of its size, which still lasts us for weeks.
Half-vampires really have a different sense of calories. Apparently, it is because both her human and vampiric age indicates that she must eat a lot more than normal to keep up her energy. I can only guess how much I would need to be eating when I reach that level. Good thing the VEO pays us well.
Did we run out of rice? I don't really think so, but I know don't have any more flour. I did see a lot of cake recipes on my phone today, and it really got me interested in baking more. Ai will definitely love all these recipes, and I do enjoy eating different types of sweets, so it will be win-win.
"All-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder…" As I was reading off the mental list, my eyes fell onto the vegetable aisle where both Ai and Akira were standing. Akira did look a little uncomfortable there. I made my way towards them, wondering what was going on. "Is something wrong?"
"Oh, I asked Akira to grab some vegetables for me, but she doesn't want to approach it," Ai said with her hands full of snacks. Seriously, this girl.
"What's wrong, Akira?" I asked her, and she looked at me with a saddened look on her face.
"My sincerest apologies, Kazuki-sama, but the vegetables are placed under light UV-lights. It doesn't burn like standing in the sun, but it will still sting a lot," she said, bowing before me. All eyes were on us, mostly due to Ai and Akira being quite pretty, so I panicked and quickly made Akira stand up straight.
"Hey, no need to apologize for stuff like this. It's okay," I said and looked back at Ai. "How about helping her put most of these snacks away? There are too many."
"But didn't you say this was the norm for half-vampires?" Akira asked Ai, and she had a sweat drop falling down her forehead.
"Ehehehe…did I? I said since Akira is here, we should get some for her too. Yes, that is exactly what I said," Ai said proudly nodding her head. We both stared at her with a blank expression. "Hey, it's not like she can't eat this stuff."
"Is that true?" I asked Akira, and she nodded her head.
"While blood is how we get all of our nourishment, we can still consume human food, though it has no real nutritional value to us, which is why most vampires tend not to consume it. There are a few vampires out there who relish the taste of certain human foods they used to eat before they were vampires, but that is mostly for nostalgic reasons. The scent and taste of blood have completely overlapped all these flavours, and we crave that more than any other," she explained.
"Is there something in particular you would like to try?" I asked Akira she shook her head.
"Kazuki-sama doesn't have to worry about stuff like that. I am quite contempt with the blood I drink every day," she said.
"Now we know for sure there is something you want to try," Ai said playfully, bumping into Akira. "What is it? Kazu-kun makes the best food in the entire world, so I'm sure he can make you that. Right Kazu-kun?"
"Is that even a question?" I said, smiling at them. "So, what do you want to eat?"
"I can't possibly ask Kazuki-sama to prepare something for me. As his servant, it would be very disgraceful for me to ask such a thing," she kept on denying.
"Akira," Ai said with the biggest mischievous smile on her face. Akira's eyes widened, knowing full well what she was about to say.
"Ai-sama, please do- "
"That is an order, tell us what you want to eat," Ai said, and Akira's shoulders dropped in defeat. "And don't even think about lying to us."
"I can't ever lie to you. My position doesn't allow it," she said with her head down, but her ears were turning red. "…please."
"What?" We couldn't hear anything because she said it in such a little voice.
"I said…" Akira tried her best to hold back the words, but given the situation we put her in. "A hamburger steak, please…"
"Noted, we are having hamburger steak for dinner," I announced, and Ai cheered alongside me. I went over to the meat section to buy the ingredients for it. "Ai, please get us some white onions, we ran out of those."
"Roger, Kazu-kun!" Ai cheered happily, saluting me.
"And Akira, please help her put most of the snacks back," I said, and Ai whined but was dragged away by Akira, helping her put away the snacks.
It was honestly quite a funny sight to see. Something inside of me started feeling a little warm as I chose the ground beef and pork for the patties. We would also need some eggs. We luckily do have panko and the stuff for the sauces at home, so I won't have to buy them.
Just like that, the menu for dinner was decided.
