Chapter 74 - Blood Test I
Bai Xi followed Han Zhuo through streets and alleys of all sizes. If he was a little disappointed when they first left, his curiosity completely replaced that feeling by this point. However, Mr. Han didn’t seem to intend to tell him the answer in advance until the two stopped in front of a school entrance.
“Hulu Street No. 3 Middle School?” Bai Xi asked in a low voice. “Is there also a research institute for superpowers hidden here?”
Han Zhuo motioned for him to look to the left. “It has nothing to do with the school. This is our destination today.”
An inconspicuous bookstore was squeezed into a corner. Like many shops near schools, it had several wire beds protruding from the door, filled with various snacks and celebrity posters. Looking inside, Bai Xi saw various teaching aids, books, and stationery, but since it was the weekend, there wasn’t much business.
“Knowledge Bookstore?” Bai Xi was puzzled. “What are we doing here?”
“Meeting a person,” Han Zhuo led him into the store, greeted the napping salesperson, and walked straight to the back. The air was filled with the smell of ink and paper. It was a large warehouse filled with teaching aids and exam simulation questions. Bai Xi picked up a few scattered books from the ground and placed them aside. He felt that the place was a little dark and looked around, just as he was trying to find a light source when a door quietly opened in front of him.
A cold wind blew in his face, mixed with a faint smell of disinfectant. Bai Xi frowned slightly, guessing that this might be another research institute for superpowers. Han Zhuo seemed to see through his thoughts, put his arm around his shoulders, and whispered, “There are no experimental subjects, so don’t be afraid.”
The further they went in, the stronger the smell of disinfectant became. However, the walls on both sides of the corridor didn’t have the serious atmosphere of medical and scientific research at all. Instead, they were covered with pink wallpaper, with wings, stars, and a spaceship painted on them. The little pilot in the spaceship looked familiar.
“Is this you when you were a child?” Bai Xi observed carefully.
Han Zhuo coughed and said awkwardly, “Can you recognize it?”
“Yes,” Bai Xi said with a smile, “It’s very childlike.”
“Welcome, our great King,” the two of them were talking when a grey-haired man suddenly appeared behind them. He looked at Bai Xi and added, “And this cute little maid, you are the one who wants to donate blood today?”
Bai Xi was speechless.
“Watch your wording, he is my employer,” Han Zhuo threw a diamond and asked, “Where’s the laboratory?”
“Everything is ready.” The man turned sideways, made an invitation gesture like a waiter, winked at Bai Xi, and whispered, “Don’t be afraid, the needle isn’t thick, and we only need you to have about… uh, 1000ML of blood?”
Bai Xi looked at Han Zhuo.
Mr. Han closed the laboratory door behind him and slapped the chattering administrator outside.
There was sterilizing equipment and syringes on a tray. Only then did Bai Xi realize: “Do I need to donate blood?”
“This is Gwen’s laboratory,” Han Zhuo said. “I want to do a blood test on you.” This was a sudden idea he had the previous night. Since he suspected that the person standing behind Bai Xi and Linda was the same person, there might be some connections that could be found in the blood.
“Why didn’t you tell me last night?” Bai Xi unbuttoned the cuffs of his shirt. “Were you worried that I would refuse?”
“Of course not. Why do you think so?” Han Zhuo was a little surprised. “If you don’t want to, I won’t force it.”
Bai Xi placed his arm on the cushion. “Go ahead, 1000ML.”
“It only takes five millilitres, but that’s not the point.” Han Zhuo shook his head, pulled down his sleeves, and asked tentatively, “You look very unhappy. Did I do something wrong?”
Bai Xi stared at him for a while, feeling a little dumbfounded. He repeated it again, “I’m really not angry.”
However, Mr. Han was still explaining. He said, “I just wanted you to have a good rest, so I didn’t tell you last night, and I didn’t think it was a big deal. Of course, if you don’t want to, we can leave here right away.”
Bai Xi felt dizzy and lay on the experimental table with his arms stretched out. “Do you want the blood or not?”
Han Zhuo replied decisively, “No more blood donation, let’s go home.”
Bai Xi: “…”
Han Zhuo picked up his coat from the sofa and was about to take him away. When things developed to this extent, Bai Xi’s mood was hard to describe. He had to hold Han Zhuo back and solemnly declared again, “I am really, completely, not angry because of the blood test.”
Han Zhuo looked into his eyes, leaned forward slightly, and said, “But you have to have a reason to be angry. I want to know so that I can do better in the future.”
His tone was sincere, so sincere that people couldn’t bear to refuse. Bai Xi sincerely envied the girls at that moment because no matter how unreasonable they were, they could still blame everything on… their mood, but he couldn’t.
Han Zhuo still looked guilty and seemed to have reflected a hundred times in his heart, but he really hadn’t done anything wrong and truly didn’t deserve this kind of “punishment.” Bai Xi had no choice but to accept his fate and said dejectedly, “I’m not angry about the blood test, and it’s totally okay that you didn’t tell me in advance, but last night, I thought it was a date.”
This time, it was Mr. Han’s turn to be silent, but his silence wasn’t sincere. He seemed to be smiling, and his eyes behind the lenses were shining softly, as if many little stars had gathered to watch the fun.
“So, in the end, this matter was still my fault.” Han Zhuo held his hands, brought them to his mouth and kissed them, “We are going on a date now.”
“Let’s draw blood first,” Bai Xi rolled up his sleeves and spoke. “Be gentle.”
The sharp needle penetrated the skin, but it didn’t sting much. Han Zhuo pressed the needle hole with alcohol cotton and asked him considerately, “Does it hurt?”
“It doesn’t hurt,” Bai Xi replied. “Your technique is very good.”
Han Zhuo lowered his head, and while helping him press the wound, he raised the corners of his mouth uncontrollably. “Thank you for the compliment.”
It wasn’t until five seconds later that Bai Xi realized the other meaning of this sentence, and the blood instantly burned to his face. When the two of them left, the administrator behind them, who was worried about the world not in chaos, even repeated the words at the top of his lungs: “Your technique is very good.”
Han Zhuo asked in a low voice, “Do you want me to beat up this parrot?”
Bai Xi blushed and grabbed his clothes, almost dragging him out of the bookstore.
“We’re going the wrong way,” Han Zhuo reminded him with a smile. “Let’s go to the left.”
“Where are we going?” Bai Xi finally stopped.
“A date,” Han Zhuo picked up a bag of potato chips from the stall and handed them to him. “I’ll take you to the amusement park.”
There were haunted houses and roller coasters, and it was mentioned in books and movies; it was really a good place for a date.
