Chapter 280, Eleanor's Brother Harkins Comes_1
Eleanor's death shocked the entire Xileruo World.
The Alliance of All-Gods did not react. Being killed by a Corrupted Hero did not warrant an investigation, and the fact that the Goddess died at the hands of a Corrupted Hero was indisputable.
However, the Bach Family was different. Eleanor was their Goddess, and her death was very difficult to comprehend.
How did Eleanor die? Where did Eleanor die? As a Goddess, how could she have been killed by a Corrupted Hero?
The Bach Family dispatched a powerful investigator to find answers: Eleanor's brother, Harkins.
「Within the Gregory Family residence.」
All members of the Gregory Family stood by, with Arlene and Arno also present. Harkins's face was gloomy. "My sister is dead," he said, "killed by a Corrupted Hero."
"Can anyone tell me how she died at the hands of a Corrupted Hero? The one who killed her was a Third-stage Corrupted Hero, and my sister was protected by over a dozen Fourth-stage Masters, who have also disappeared without a trace."
"Anyone could have killed them, but my sister is dead, her death so bizarre. Do any of you have anything to say about this?"
Arno remained expressionless.
Harkins looked at the silent crowd and sneered.
Roy stepped forward. "Master Harkins, we are also unclear about this matter. She was a Goddess; perhaps she went somewhere else and was ambushed."
"Ambushed? My sister was a Goddess, her equipment legendary. Only a Son of God from the Difiled Camp could have possibly killed her; otherwise, an average Corrupted Hero would stand no chance."
"Even though the Alliance doesn't investigate, she was my sister. I've come here on orders to deal with the Underworld Clan, and now she has died mysteriously at the hands of the Difiled Camp. Don't you find this suspicious?" Harkins spoke calmly.
Seeing the crowd remain silent, Harkins continued, "Also, I've heard that a Swordsman had a conflict with my sister. Is that true?"
"Eleanor wanted to subdue him, but the Swordsman refused. Where is he now?"
Arno stepped forward. "He's called Jiang Chen. He is not a member of the Gregory Family; he is my friend. To protect my sister, I had him join the Secret Sword Legion. Indeed, there was a conflict between Lady Eleanor and Jiang Chen."
"Where is he?" Harkins demanded.
"He's not here," Arno replied.
"Summon him. I want to understand the whole situation."
Arno looked at Arlene. "Contact Jiang Chen using the Badge."
DING! DING! DING!
「Jiang Chen read the Legion's message.」
Arlene: "Come to the Clan. Eleanor's brother, Harkins, has arrived. He wants to know about Eleanor."
Jiang Chen read the message. Eleanor's brother? he thought.
Jiang Chen: "No time."
Arlene: "Don't be like that. My brother asked you to come. Harkins is furious; he suspects his sister's death is very strange."
Jiang Chen: "If he wants to know anything, tell him to find me. I'll wait for him at the Nibao Tavern."
Jiang Chen closed the communication.
Arlene's face colored with embarrassment. "He said he'll wait for you at the Nibao Tavern."
Harkins sneered. "Conceited indeed. Even I, a Son of God, cannot summon him. No wonder my sister could not subdue him."
Harkins left with his entourage, exiting the castle.
Roy looked at Arno. "Come to my study."
「Inside the study.」
Roy stared at Arno, asking pointedly, "I want to know if you had anything to do with this?"
"No."
"Really?"
"It has nothing to do with me. Eleanor died at the hands of a Corrupted Hero. That's perfectly normal and has absolutely nothing to do with me."
"Too normal to be normal! Do you think Harkins is a fool? How did she die? Where did she die? And the person who killed her was just a Hero? Don't you find that suspicious?"
"Not suspicious."
Roy exploded in anger. From Arno's reaction, it was clear he was involved.
If any other Son of God had died, it would have been just another death, but this was Eleanor. And Eleanor had been staying with their Clan.
Roy sighed. "I hope you don't drag the Clan into hell. Go on, attend to your duties."
Arno turned and left.
Roy shook his head. Jiang Chen was definitely involved, and Arno clearly played a part. Roy could roughly guess the truth: the Corrupted Hero was just a scapegoat.
「Inside the Nibao Tavern.」
Christie Burton and Jiang Chen were drinking when Harkins arrived at the tavern with a dozen men. Christie Burton turned with a smile and said, "Harkins, didn't expect to see you here! Come, join us for a drink."
Harkins looked at Jiang Chen. "So, he has thrown in his lot with you."
"No," Christie Burton replied. "Jiang Chen is my friend—now and in the future. He is not my subordinate."
Harkins fixed his gaze on Jiang Chen. "I want to know how my sister died," he questioned.
"Hasn't that already been answered? Killed by a Corrupted Hero."
"Killed by a Third-stage Corrupted Hero? Do you really think I'd believe that?"
"Whether you believe it or not has nothing to do with me," Jiang Chen retorted.
Harkins frowned.
"Watch your tone, kid!" one of Harkins's men snapped.
"He is Lord Harkins, a Son of God! You'd better remember your place!"
Jiang Chen said disdainfully, "So what if he's a Son of God? Eleanor was a Goddess, and when she made a tactical error on the battlefield, I dared to call her out. I'm not afraid of other Sons of God either. Did you think I would kneel to speak with you?"
"You need to understand one thing: I am [Apostles]. I've earned merit for the Alliance of All-Gods, shed blood for it. I'm not your subordinate, so why should I obey you?"
Harkins stared intently at Jiang Chen. "Does my sister's death have anything to do with you?"
"No, it doesn't."
"Did you kill my sister?"
Jiang Chen looked at Christie Burton and exclaimed, "He's slandering me! He's slandering me!"
So what if he's slandering you? Why shout about it? Christie Burton thought.
Christie Burton coughed. "Harkins, you're out of line. Jiang Chen is a Hero of the Alliance of All-Gods. Killing a Son of God is a grave sin. If you keep saying things like that, I might have to report you."
Harkins retorted, "It doesn't matter. Do you think I'd be punished? Your name is Jiang Chen, right? I'll investigate. If her death is related to you, I won't let the murderer off easily."
Jiang Chen smiled. "Then you'll have to go to the Difiled God Camp to catch the murderer."
"You think I wouldn't dare?"
Go on then! Jiang Chen thought. What are you showing off for?
Harkins turned and left.
Christie Burton looked at Jiang Chen skeptically. "Eleanor's death... it isn't really related to you, is it?"
"You're slandering me too?"
"It had better not be. Otherwise, Harkins will investigate."
"How would he investigate?"
"Didn't you just say it? Go to the Difiled God Camp and catch the murderer."
Jiang Chen chuckled. "He wouldn't really go, would he?"
Christie Burton shook his head. "He definitely won't go personally. But don't forget the Etheric Trade Association. It's easy for them to track the scent of a Corrupted Hero."
"And there's the Orc Alliance. With enough money, that murderer will definitely be caught. Harkins will surely go to the black market to look for clues. He's not that easy to fool."
"Eleanor died at the hands of a Difiled Divine Hero. The Alliance of All-Gods won't get involved; it's a common occurrence. Just like when you killed Gresham, the Son of God, the League of Difiled Gods didn't investigate."
Well, well, well. It seems this matter isn't that simple. If Harkins goes to the black market, they'll surely trace it back to the Heavenly Earth Association. Back then, I was posing as Chen Jinnan of the Heavenly Earth Association. Then Granny Jinhua made her move, killing the Corrupted Hero blamed for Eleanor's death. The clues would definitely lead back to me. And if those three Corrupted Heroes are caught, it will definitely be traced back to me. Before Eleanor died, she had discovered my identity. Those three Corrupted Heroes never saw me, but they know about a Swordsman with a Thin Sword and a robe. That's bound to raise suspicions.
Jiang Chen asked, "What Level is Harkins?"
Christie Burton smiled mysteriously. "So, it does involve you after all."
"I just want to help. As a Hero of the Continent of All-Gods, how could I not assist in investigating Eleanor's death?"
Damn it... Christie thought. You were just badmouthing Eleanor a moment ago. Now you want to help?
"Harkins is a Fifth-stage Magic Swordsman."
Jiang Chen sank into thought. Fifth-stage... that means over Level 250.
