Chapter 136: If the Home-keeping Immortal loses his home, what can he protect? _1
A large amount of bones and mud rolled out of the Yuan River.
Wang Linchi's surprise attack was very effective. Even though the Jealous Wife River God noticed someone peeping at her, she just didn't expect Wang Linchi to take immediate action. He had poured a staggering 9,000 points of spiritual power into his Fanciful and Fickle attack; if that didn't obliterate her, he was prepared to flee.
Fortunately, the effect was excellent. Not only was the Jealous Wife River God destroyed, but the entire Shui Mansion was also turned into a complete mess.
"Is that it?" The Fox Ghost seemed incredulous.
"Not yet," Wang Linchi said. The main reason is that the event hasn't settled yet.
This was clearly an event. He could understand the Jealous Wife River God not dropping a Soul Kind, as that wasn't guaranteed, but an event settlement definitely should yield a Soul Kind. However, up to now, nothing had happened. Either the Jealous Wife River God isn't truly dead, or this matter isn't over yet.
"Could it be that this Jealous Wife isn't dead?!" The Fox Ghost was also startled. "Logically, she should be. Wang Linchi's attack had turned the entire Shui Mansion upside down, and the corpses from below had all been tossed to the river's surface. It's highly unlikely she survived that."
"She's dead, but this matter isn't finished." Wang Linchi furrowed his brow. "I was a bit too hasty. If I'd known, I wouldn't have killed her so directly. Now the trail is cold."
This move was like skipping the tutorial—he'd killed the boss, but now he didn't know what to do next.
"Could it be you're overthinking it? The Jealous Wife River God has been in the Yuan River for decades, and I've never heard of her having any connections with others." The Fox Ghost didn't really care about any follow-up; he only cared that the Jealous Wife River God was dead and he had successfully avenged the Xu Family.
"It's probably connections she made during all those years as the Jealous Wife River God." Wang Linchi rolled his eyes. "Could you have monitored her constantly? Not when she was alive, and certainly not after she died?"
With the Fox Ghost's meager power, considering the Jealous Wife River God had an advantage in the water and he couldn't even defeat her on land, thinking he could monitor her underwater was indeed delusional.
"Well, let's go now. We can help you find the Detained Fox Ghost method in the meantime," the Fox Ghost urged Wang Linchi to leave quickly.
"I've lived for so many years, and this is the first time I've met someone so eager for their own demise..." Wang Linchi complained. This Fox Ghost is truly sincere. After getting his revenge, he's actually urging me to end him.
"It's mainly because I don't have long to live. If we don't find the Detained Fox Ghost method quickly, you won't have a perfect way to handle things later," the Fox Ghost said. He had long accepted his impending death. Now that his great revenge had been achieved, and with his remaining lifespan short, it was natural for him to want to fulfill his promise sooner for a quicker release.
"Alright then, let's leave first. Anyway, staying here isn't helping..." Wang Linchi stopped mid-sentence and glanced back. Just then, he felt something watching him, a sensation that vanished as quickly as it appeared.
"Did you feel something watching us?" Wang Linchi asked.
"No. You know I'm just a mascot." After achieving his revenge, the Fox Ghost seemed somewhat listless, even abandoning the scholarly demeanor he had maintained before.
"I think it's the follow-up event. Let's go after it... No, wait." Wang Linchi reconsidered. "I need to find a place to rest first." Naturally, he wanted to pursue the enemy.
But then he glanced at his Golden Core, which only had 1,000 points of spiritual power left, and he abandoned the idea.
No mana. If I chase them, I'm afraid I'll be counter-killed. After all, I'm like an assassin: if I can one-shot the target, I win; if not, I run. Although I can divide this attack, I usually use it to one-shot bosses, not mobs.
"What is it? Danger?" The Fox Ghost seemed puzzled.
"Yes, how could there not be danger? Wait until I've rested, then we'll leave via the north gate... Actually, forget resting. Let's just run now." Wang Linchi quickly assessed his situation. No mana means no combat power. The best solution is to run. Reward? Forget it. At most, it would be an Excellent Level Soul Kind, and it's not like I'm short on those.
Hearing Wang Linchi's words, the Fox Ghost didn't object and followed him towards the north gate.
However, the city gates were already under martial law. The lockdown wasn't because Wang Linchi had killed the Jealous Wife River God, but because he had exterminated thirteen members of the Qi family. Yuan City didn't care about the death of a ghost, but they did care about the annihilation of an entire prominent household.
"Do you have an exit permit?" a city guard at the gate asked. Seeing Wang Linchi's uncommon attire, his attitude softened considerably.
"No, I don't. Can one not leave the city without one?" Wang Linchi said, discreetly handing over a small silver ingot. "I plan to visit a friend outside the city. I'd appreciate it if you could make an exception."
The guard accepted it without hesitation and immediately let them pass. "Young Master, it's better to carry an exit permit next time, to avoid putting me in a difficult position."
He says it's difficult, but it's actually no trouble at all; he's quite pleased inside. It's rare to meet such a sucker. The official price for an exit permit is much cheaper than this silver ingot, and that fee wouldn't even end up in his own hands. As for this person being the murderer? Impossible. The fellow looked so delicate and frail, clearly someone who couldn't lift a heavy load—how could he possibly have the strength to kill thirteen members of the Qi family? The targets of their investigation are mainly burly men, not pampered young masters like this one.
"I was in a hurry when I arrived, so I couldn't help it," Wang Linchi said, then left Yuan City with the Fox Ghost.
He had no idea what would happen in Yuan City next, and frankly, it had nothing to do with him. The entire family was wiped out; could anyone still seek revenge on him? Oh, it's not entirely impossible. What if one of them turned into a ghost... but that's not very realistic either. After all, he had blasted their souls into smithereens. How could they possibly turn into ghosts? They couldn't even become Corpse Ghosts. To prevent them from seeking revenge, Wang Linchi had been exceptionally ruthless.
Upon leaving Yuan City, Wang Linchi soon asked, "Which way should we go?"
The Fox Ghost looked at Wang Linchi, a bit puzzled. "You're asking me?"
"That's right. Who else would I ask? You're the one who said you'd take me to find the Restricting Ghost Fox Law," Wang Linchi stated confidently.
"How would I know where to find the Restricting Ghost Fox Law..." The Fox Ghost was rather speechless.
"You're a mascot! Just use your auspicious powers, and we'll find it," Wang Linchi urged, wanting the Fox Ghost to use its ability.
"But my ability has already become ineffective," the Fox Ghost said suddenly.
"What do you mean?" Wang Linchi was taken aback, never expecting the Fox Ghost's ability could actually fail.
"It means the Xu Family has been completely wiped out," the Fox Ghost said after a pause.
Xu Lian is dead? No, he died long ago. Could he have been utterly annihilated? Wang Linchi immediately thought of the Exam Ghost.
"No. It's because I left Yuan City. The Xu Family, which essentially consisted only of me by that point, naturally ceased to exist. As their Home-keeping Immortal, my abilities naturally became ineffective once the Xu Family was no more," the Fox Ghost explained.
"Now there's a crucial problem. If I make you into a Ghost Pattern, can I still inherit your ability?" Wang Linchi's eye twitched.
"Probably... I think so?" The Fox Ghost was uncertain.
"Then why didn't you remind me earlier?" Wang Linchi pressed his forehead, exasperated.
"I only just realized it myself." The Fox Ghost explained, "How would I know so much? I grew up in the Xu Family. The Xus weren't some wandering cultivators or a Great Family with vast knowledge about ghosts. After the Xu Family fell, besides me, the only other entity in Yuan City connected to them was the Jealous Wife River God, who was transformed from a jealous woman of the Xu Family. Home-keeping Immortals formed from fox ghosts are inherently rare, so even less is known about them."
"Is it too late if we go back now...?" Wang Linchi felt a headache coming on. This is such a mess.
"Can spilled water be gathered back up?" the Fox Ghost retorted.
"Yes, it can." Wang Linchi thought for a moment. As long as it hasn't evaporated, I can use my Thought Field to interfere and extract all the moisture from the ground. Not only can I gather it back, I could probably get even more.
"Huh?" The Fox Ghost was completely taken aback by Wang Linchi's answer.
"Never mind spilled water. Even crumpled paper or a shattered mirror, I can smooth out and weld back together," Wang Linchi said with a straight face. "You can't do it simply because your knowledge isn't sufficient."
"But what's the use of you winning this semantic argument with me?" the Fox Ghost quickly retorted. "My ability truly became ineffective because the Xu Family was destroyed. Even if I return to Yuan City, or even to the Xu Mansion, it won't be restored." He reminded Wang Linchi that even if he won the argument, the ability was still gone; that couldn't be changed.
Wang Linchi's face fell. "This is a bit of a loss. Forget it. I'll find another Fox Ghost to study later and see if I can restore yours."
It was a loss, true, but a Home-keeping Immortal still had value. He'd keep the Fox Ghost around for now to observe and collect data. He suspected the ability wasn't truly gone, just inactive.
