Chapter 53: Is Today My 80th Birthday?
"Today is a good day."
Taylor said to Li Yu, who was sitting across the table from her, looking quite pleased.
"It's been three months since we first met in this office, and during this time, the board has been observing you, witnessing your transformation and growth."
As Taylor spoke, she picked up a report in front of her, "For the past sixty days, Kaden has consistently rated you as perfect. You've worked diligently without taking a single day off, faithfully executing all the tasks assigned by the board without any compromises."
"In another dimension, you are actively promoting the unification war, speeding up the pace of missionary work." Taylor put down the report in front of her and looked at Li Yu again, "I see your latest report mentions that your army has just achieved a major victory, defeating three other throne contenders."
Li Yu nodded, "Deer Horn Gate, where Ireya defeated Allister, Conley, and Claudio, and we also used missiles to kill Conley's two dragons and most of the remaining Wing Clan warriors."
"Very good. How long do you think this Ireya will take to conquer the entire continent?"
"In Earth terms, about four to five months."
"Limit the time to within three months. I know you can do it." Taylor picked up the phone, "Send in a bottle of champagne."
After she hung up the phone, she looked at Li Yu again, her smile radiant, "And most importantly... you've finally made up your mind to undergo the test of the 'Mouth of Truth.'"
"I feel ready to prove my loyalty to the company," Li Yu said, extending his hand.
But Taylor said, "Don't rush. It's a significant moment. It's best to have all the board members present. Let me check the time... how about tomorrow night?"
"I have no problem with that," Li Yu said.
"Great, don't come to work tomorrow. Take a day off for yourself. You've been working hard for a long time. Do something you enjoy. We're about to leave this planet. Don't leave any regrets for yourself," Taylor said.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door, and Xu Mengyuan walked in with a bottle of Cook's Collection champagne.
Taylor took the champagne, opened it, took two glasses out of the drawer, poured a glass for Li Yu, and raised the other one.
"Future generations will forever remember this day, the day our Noah's Ark is about to welcome its captain."
"Is this a metaphor, or ... do we really have a spaceship?" Li Yu asked.
"Don't be anxious. After tomorrow night, you'll enter a whole new world, provided you secure that ticket. If there's nothing else, you can leave now." Taylor gave the cue to leave.
Li Yu took his glass of champagne and walked out of Taylor's office.
Suddenly not having to work overtime made him feel a bit uneasy. Li Yu glanced at his wristwatch.
It was now six in the evening, just the time for traffic jams, with endless queues of cars moving slowly on the streets.
Li Yu remembered Taylor's parting advice, so he took out his phone, called Zhang Yanlin first, then dialed Zhang Hai, Hao Xiaoxiao, and Ma Yuhan's numbers.
Li Yu even contacted Wang Guowei, who was still working overtime, inviting them to have dinner at his rented place.
Except for Ma Yuhan, who couldn't come because she had a blind date, everyone else agreed to come.
Wang Guowei even planned to ditch work and return early, but Li Yu told him not to rush.
He then went to the supermarket and the vegetable market to buy some ingredients and started cooking at home.
After putting the ribs on to stew, Li Yu remembered something and went upstairs to knock on An Yixin's door.
After about a minute, the door was opened from the inside.
An Yixin peeked out, "What's up, Uncle?"
"Nothing major, just that I'm cooking and wondering if you'd like to join for dinner." Li Yu said as he peeked inside, noticing a cup of instant noodles with the lid just ripped off on the table.
"Where's your mom? Playing mahjong again?"
"No, she's gone out for a few days with her friends, apparently won a luxury cruise in a recent raffle."
"Then come on down. A few other friends will be here too, ones you've met before from the short videos we shot at the company," Li Yu said.
"If you don't feel like seeing them, I can bring some up to you after it's done."
"No, that's too much trouble. I'll just come down and eat." An Yixin said as she went in to grab her keys.
"Also bring your homework. The meal will take some time," Li Yu added.
"Okay." With her homework in hand, An Yixin didn't bother changing shoes and came downstairs with her bunny slippers to join Li Yu.
Li Yu let An Yixin do her homework in the living room, then went back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
At 7:30, Hao Xiaoxiao was the first to arrive, greeted An Yixin, and went to the kitchen to help Li Yu. Next was Zhang Hai, who even lugged a case of beer along, insisting no one leaves unless they drink till they drop.
Then came Zhang Yanlin, and Wang Guowei was the last to arrive, by which time the dishes were already served on the table.
Just seeing the six cold dishes on the table made Wang Guowei feel it was worth sneaking back, not to mention the kitchen was still filled with enticing aromas, making Wang Guowei's mouth water.
Hao Xiaoxiao brought out all the dishes, and Wang Guowei couldn't wait to ask, "Is today my eightieth birthday or something? The meal is so lavish?"
"If you want to celebrate it, I can put a couple of candles on the cake," Li Yu said.
"I don't think I'll live that long," Wang Guowei blinked, "I didn't even dare to look at my health exam this year. Last year it already showed a bunch of issues."
At this point, Zhang Yanlin asked, "Is there a special occasion? You invited all of us here?"
"No, just that I've been really busy with work recently and might have neglected everyone a bit. So while I had time tonight, I thought I'd invite everyone over for dinner."
"So you're finally over your breakup?" Wang Guowei said casually.
"Breakup?" Everyone else perked up their ears.
"Ah, you guys didn't know?"
"That's not true, don't say things that aren't true." Li Yu handed Wang Guowei a pair of chopsticks, then said, "Alright, let's eat."
But Zhang Yanlin and others were intrigued by Wang Guowei's words. Hao Xiaoxiao said, "Boss, did you get dumped? Who was it that rejected you? An heiress? Or a celebrity?"
"No, I wasn't dumped," Li Yu said.
"But you seemed really down during that period, like you were about to die," Wang Guowei said while munching on jellyfish head, not missing a chance to spill more secrets.
"Ah, now that you mention it, I remember," Hao Xiaoxiao said, "The boss did seem gloom for a while. Seeing him put us on edge, we even thought the company was going to shut down."
