Chapter 52: Chapter 52: The Necromancer
Inside the exam grounds, wizard apprentices were using all they had learned to battle their opponents. Outside, a group of wizards gathered in the hall on the 101st floor of the Central Black Tower, collectively observing the exam. This exam was both a selection process and a showcase for self-promotion. Wizards often discovered hidden talents during exams and took them as formal apprentices.
For most wizards, however, this exam was an entertaining diversion.
"Lofty, your apprentice is doing well. In just two days, he's already scored fifteen points," a gaunt, skeletal wizard remarked with a grin.
In the crystal ball before him, an apprentice was using elemental spells to obliterate his enemies.
On the other side, a wizard half-wreathed in flames commented, "Your apprentice is impressive too. Though he's a blockhead, he's tougher than diamond."
"Look at Freud's student; he's taken the path of faith and asceticism. Freud, are you using formal apprentices for experiments now?" a ghostly, spectral wizard suddenly shouted.
A wizard in white robes, who appeared holy and benevolent, bristled with indignation.
"He chose that path himself; it has nothing to do with me."
...
Conversations like these filled the hall.
For wizards with formal apprentices, the exam was a chance to showcase their students. For rival wizards, it was a proxy war, where their apprentice's success was a reflection of their own prowess.
"Jolord, your apprentice seems to be struggling," a skeletal wizard taunted.
In his crystal ball, Richard's score was a mere four, unimpressive even among ordinary apprentices.
Jolord adjusted his glasses, responding coldly:
"Aejon, not everyone shares your love for killing."
In Jolord's crystal ball, Aejon's apprentice was nearing twenty points, accompanied by a skeletal giant radiating death energy that withered plants around it.
"Is that so? Jolord," Aejon mocked, "I heard your student isn't like this at the academy. Isn't he quite the fighter?"
Jolord retorted, "It's called an eye for an eye; a murderer like you wouldn't understand."
The surrounding wizards watched the exchange with amused interest.
The feud between Jolord and Aejon was long-standing, not easily summarized. However, Jolord had consistently come out on top in apprentice competitions over the decades. Both Anna and Chaxes had consistently outperformed Aejon's apprentices.
Richard's lackluster performance seemed to give Aejon an opportunity.
...
In the exam grounds, Richard rubbed his nose. He had just sneezed several times, as if someone were talking about him.
"Who's talking about me now? Could Ellie be in trouble?"
Shaking his head, Richard continued toward the center of the exam grounds, greatsword on his back. But after a few steps, he felt a subtle tremor.
"Something's coming," Richard muttered, touching the ground and looking to his left.
Switching his perspective to the airborne Wuni, he quickly identified the source of the tremor—a skeletal giant accompanied by a robed figure.
"Seems like a formidable opponent," Richard mused, debating whether to engage.
He hadn't killed many not because he didn't want to compete for leaderboard spots, but because hunting down apprentices one by one was inefficient.
The apprentices he'd encountered fled at the first sign of conflict, making it challenging to secure marks.
Since all apprentices had to be eliminated eventually, the rewards for killing early and late were disproportionate. Surviving apprentices would be stronger, but Richard considered himself capable.
They were all apprentices; he had more magic stones and equipment. Even if he couldn't win, he could still escape.
While he deliberated, the distant Sly noticed him through a spell.
"Not running away after spotting me? You've chosen death," Sly cackled.
Since entering the exam grounds, Sly felt like he was in paradise, encountering only weak apprentices. Some hadn't even reached intermediate level and still dared to act in the exam. To Sly, they were walking magic stones.
One apprentice mark equaled 100 magic stones, ten marks made 1,000. With over 4,000 apprentices in the exam, that's over 40,000 magic stones.
Even if he claimed just one percent, 4,000 stones was a substantial fortune.
Imagining this scenario, Sly waved his staff, sending the skeletal giant charging at Richard.
"Hmm?"
Richard sensed danger.
Watching the giant approach, he shook his head with a smile.
"Why hesitate?"
With that, Richard exhaled white breath, his muscles and height expanding instantly, transforming into a two-meter-tall black-scaled giant as Wuni moved into position above.
Seeing this, Sly frowned, "An apprentice practicing blood alchemy, at least twice."
Then he grinned maniacally.
Blood alchemy was insignificant; necromancers were the bane of physical-focused apprentices.
If he could merge this apprentice into the skeletal giant, its constitution would greatly improve, possibly reaching thirty-nine points in the exam.
Thinking this, Sly felt the heavens favored him.
Boom, boom, boom...
On the ground, two colossal figures clashed with thunderous impacts, kicking up clouds of dust.
Before the dust settled, a gust ripped it apart, revealing the scene.
Richard wielded his Devourer of Magic greatsword, the blade leaving faint afterimages as he swung.
Since becoming an intermediate apprentice, Richard's Wind Crow Slash, inherited from Duke Blackwood, had evolved. It no longer screeched but struck with the silence of death.
The skeletal giant, unfazed by the blade, swung its pillar-like arms at Richard's head.
Boom.
A gust swept over Richard's head as he ducked at the last moment, his sword slicing through the giant like butter.
In an instant, yellow-green pus spilled from the giant's wound, a stench like rotting pork assaulting Richard's nose.
"Ugh."
Ri
chard retched but kept moving.
Inside the wound, a shriveled heart, seemingly fusing life and death, beat faintly.
