Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Aftermath
Crack!
A bolt of lightning lit up the night sky.
Beside Joseph's body, a black-robed wizard examined the corpse, surrounded by dozens of academy monitors perched on branches.
"Have you confirmed the identity?" the black-robed wizard asked.
"Yes, it's Joseph, Ulrich's formal apprentice."
"Ulrich's apprentice? That's a bit troublesome." The black-robed wizard stood up, holding a deformed piece of dark gray metal.
"Did this kid have any enemies?"
"He had a few, but they all have alibis."
Ereks, the black-robed wizard, pondered the bullet, musing aloud, "I should ask more specifically—did he have any enemies in the Alchemy school?"
"There's perhaps one: Richard, Jolord's apprentice, who was just cursed. He and Joseph had business conflicts."
At this point, one of the monitors shrieked in frustration:
"So how did he die, Ereks? We've found no clues or suspicious apprentices in the vicinity. Yet here he is, dead without a trace!"
Ereks rubbed his ears, gesturing for silence.
"It's normal you found nothing on the ground, because the attack didn't come from there."
Ereks pointed upwards. "The attack was launched from the sky using this little device."
He displayed the deformed bullet to the monitors.
"The attacker struck from above, exploiting the anti-magic metal's magic-repelling properties to pierce the magical barrier and hit the target. Due to its high speed and unique shape, Joseph—" Ereks mimed an explosion, "—went 'boom.'"
"That's impossible, Ereks!" a monitor exclaimed. "Wizard apprentices can't cast spells from that distance without us noticing."
"But that's the reality," Ereks floated slightly off the ground. "Don't worry, I'll handle this. These incidents won't happen again."
With that, he flew towards the central Black Tower.
...
"Come, have a drink, senior!"
On the fifty-sixth floor of the Black Tower, Richard clinked glasses with Chaxes, both in high spirits.
After dealing with Joseph, Richard chose not to return to his dorm but stayed in the Black Tower instead.
He wasn't sure if the monitors had found any clues about him. If they had, returning to his dorm might lead to immediate capture and complications. Staying in the Black Tower was different; it was wizard territory, and he was currently in Jolord's domain.
As long as there was no decisive evidence, Jolord could protect him.
"Cheers, I'll join you," Chaxes said, downing his drink.
As they enjoyed their drinks, footsteps approached, growing louder.
"Damn, senior sister's here," Chaxes whispered, quickly tidying up the table.
Bang.
"Senior sister, what brings you here?" Chaxes feigned innocence.
Anna shot him a cold glance before turning to Richard, handing him a potion.
"Richard, drink this. The teacher wants to see you."
Richard sniffed the potion—it was a sobering draught—and drank it in one go before following Anna to the ninety-ninth floor.
In the lab, Jolord was having a lively conversation with Ereks.
"Jolord, your apprentice is something else. Those owl monitors were completely baffled, asking me what happened."
Jolord stroked his beard. "Vice Principal, without decisive evidence, you can't make such claims. My student is usually reclusive, always learning. He's not as capable as you suggest."
"No evidence, Jolord, but who else in this academy besides your student could devise such an outlandish method of murder?" Ereks grinned, producing the deformed bullet. "How about I take this to the Curse school for divination and see where it points?"
Jolord's expression shifted slightly.
Knock knock knock.
"Teacher, Richard is here."
"He's here," Jolord said, raising an eyebrow and using magical threads to open the lab door. "Richard, come in. Our vice principal seems to have some misconceptions about you."
Entering the lab, Richard steadied his nerves and stood beside Jolord.
"Teacher, you wanted to see me."
"Yes, Vice Principal, my student is here. He was just drinking with another student. How could he be the murderer you speak of?"
Richard swallowed.
It was indeed about Joseph.
Ereks squinted, scrutinizing Richard.
"You're Richard, right? Tonight, an apprentice died in the academy. Did you know?"
Richard shook his head. "Vice Principal, I've been on the fifty-sixth floor drinking all night. I haven't heard about this."
"Really?" Ereks shook his head. "I heard you and Joseph had significant disagreements."
"A minor dispute, really—my potions affected his business, that's all," Richard replied nonchalantly.
"Oh, seems I might be mistaken." Ereks raised an eyebrow, displaying the deformed bullet. "I wonder if the Curse school's divination would find him. Then it won't be so easily dismissed."
"Vice Principal," Richard's voice was surprisingly firm, "I truly don't know anything about this."
Richard had anticipated leaving the bullet as evidence before the killing. He had given it to Ellie to use a curse spell to erase any connections to him.
Even if a curse wizard attempted divination now, they wouldn't find anything linking it to him.
Ereks studied Richard, then burst into laughter.
"Jolord, you've got a good student. But let's not have such incidents in the academy again."
With that, Ereks placed the bullet on a nearby desk and floated out the lab window.
Shortly after, Jolord picked up the bullet, a ghostly blue flame consuming it instantly.
"Richard, did you hear what the Vice Principal said?"
"Yes."
"Don't let this happen again," Jolord said calmly. "Also, you'll stay in the Black Tower from now on. Ulrich can be petty. Since you did this to his grandson, I'm not sure how he'll react."
"Hm?" Richard noticed Jolord's choice of words.
"Joseph isn't dead?"
"Of course not," Jolord laughed, shaking his head. "Ulrich made him a life-bound phylactery. After he died, his soul returned to the phylactery. With a new body, he can live again."
"However, the cost of cloning spells is hefty. Even for a low-level apprentice, it takes thousands of magic stones. Plus, the body adaptation period is over a decade. You probably won't see him until after you graduate."
With that, Jolord returned to his desk, resuming his reading.
"Aren't you angry with me?" Richard couldn't help but ask.
Such an incident would typically warrant at least a reprimand.
"Why blame you?" Jolord replied without looking up. "You're my student. Someone cursed you, and you retaliated. It's an eye for an eye, a faultless approach."
"My students should be like that."
"Of course," Jolord suddenly looked up, winking playfully, "it would've been better if you waited for the bloody exams to settle it."
