Chapter 230: Chapter 229: A New World (Part 3)
"I never expected it to be this world," Daniel thought, standing among the crowd, watching an excited eleven or twelve-year-old boy with short black hair, wearing a green shirt and shorts, holding a uniquely shaped fishing rod.
The boy's name was Gon Freecss, the protagonist of the Hunter world. Daniel was surprised to find himself in this world. He had landed directly on Whale Island, and after some inquiry, he understood where he was. On Whale Island, there were only two children of Gon's age—a boy and a girl.
Normally, one might think these two were childhood sweethearts, but they merely knew each other because Gon was a wild child who loved spending time in the forests of Whale Island, with animals.
Whale Island only had these two children not because the residents didn't have kids, but because their children didn't stay on the island. Whale Island was more of a retirement place.
Realizing he was in the Hunter world, Daniel felt a surge of excitement, as learning Nen would be extremely beneficial to him at this time.
Daniel decided to stay on Whale Island temporarily as a visitor. In the Hunter world, the Hunter Exam was a legitimate way to learn Nen, and following Gon could easily lead him to the exam site.
Daniel didn't have to wait long on the island. Two days after his arrival, Gon caught the King of the Swamp, a massive and peculiar fish with claws.
The Hunter world, much like the pirate world, was full of extraordinary creatures. Due to someone's love for mahjong, the exact nature of the Dark Continent remained unknown, though Ging's words hinted at its extreme danger. Even the powerful Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc was only rated as a B-level threat in the Dark Continent.
"This year's Hunter Exam is taking place directly on a nearby ship, eliminating the need for Gon to find the exam site. Ging must have planned this," Daniel mused.
If it weren't for his Observation Haki detecting no powerful life forms nearby, Daniel would have suspected Ging was watching Gon from somewhere.
Maybe Ging had been here but was hiding. Daniel vaguely remembered that Nen abilities could include concealment.
Not that Daniel was paranoid, but while waiting for Gon to catch the King of the Swamp, he had researched the Hunter Exam. The first step was registration and then finding the exam site.
This wasn't easy because the Hunter Exam was global, but the exam site was singular. Participants often had to travel across continents, like Killua, who had traveled from another continent to the exam site.
Daniel didn't underestimate Gon, but if the exam location hadn't been nearby and was on another continent, Gon might not have reached it in time.
Annually, millions registered for the Hunter Exam, but only a few hundred reached the exam site.
So many people applied not because they understood what a Hunter was, but because the profession came with numerous privileges. Simply passing the exam, obtaining a Hunter License, and selling it could make one a billionaire. The license itself came with various privileges.
Such an opportunity for instant wealth was highly attractive to most people. The Hunter Exam couldn't be compared to the civil service exams in Daniel's original world.
"Aunt Mito, take care. I'll come back after finding Ging," Gon said as he prepared to leave, having caught the King of the Swamp. Mito could no longer stop Gon from taking the Hunter Exam and could only pray for his safety.
"A twelve-year-old protagonist," Daniel thought as he waited at the port. With Gon present, Daniel didn't need to worry about finding answers to the Hunter Exam questions or locating the exam site.
Once the ship arrived, Daniel and Gon boarded. The deck was filled with people, most carrying weapons.
Scanning the deck, Daniel found a corner to lean against quietly while Gon excitedly explored, as this was his first time leaving Whale Island.
As the ship sailed, Gon suddenly sniffed the air and agilely leapt onto the mast, sniffing deeply.
After a moment, Gon leapt down and approached the captain, saying, "Captain, a storm is coming."
"Oh? How do you know?" the captain asked, nonchalantly sipping his drink.
Gon pointed to a few seagulls in the sky and said, "I can smell it in the wind, and they told me."
"This kid..." The captain's eyes flashed, and he immediately ordered the crew to lower the sails.
Soon, the storm hit. The ship was tossed around violently, barely avoiding capsizing thanks to the captain's skills. The wild ride left most passengers incapacitated.
Many were thrown overboard, their fates left to chance in the raging sea.
When the storm passed, only four people remained unaffected: Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and Daniel, who had retreated to the cabin during the storm.
"A bigger storm is coming," Gon said after sniffing the air again.
"Attention, a stronger storm is approaching. Be prepared," the captain announced. The passengers, terrified, threw out lifeboats and life rings, abandoning the ship to escape.
Soon, only the captain, crew, and the four remaining passengers were left on board.
"Aren't you going to leave?" the captain asked, surprised.
"No need," Gon replied with a smile.
Daniel, Kurapika, and Leorio remained silent.
"Excellent, you pass," the captain suddenly declared.
"What do you mean?" Leorio finally reacted.
"Simple, I'm an initial examiner hired by the Hunter Association," the captain explained. With millions of applicants, the Hunter Association hired many people like the captain to conduct initial screenings.
"Why do you want to become Hunters?" the captain continued, seemingly unconcerned about the approaching storm.
"I want to find my father, a professional Hunter," Gon said immediately.
"I don't want to say," Kurapika responded.
"Is this relevant to the exam?" Leorio asked, unwilling to answer.
"The world is vast, and I want to see it," Daniel gave a classic answer.
"If you don't state your purpose, I'll have to disqualify you," the captain said, turning to Kurapika and Leorio.
Reluctantly, Kurapika and Leorio revealed their motives: revenge and money, respectively.
Their differing ideals soon led to a heated argument, escalating to a duel on the deck, despite the ship's violent shaking.
Daniel, curious, watched from the cabin doorway as Kurapika and Leorio faced off.
Kurapika wielded wooden swords, while Leorio had a small knife, likely a scalpel, reflecting his aspiration to be a doctor.
However, medical school was expensive, prompting Leorio to take the Hunter Exam for the privileges it offered, including free tuition at any university.
"Ah," a sailor cried as he was blown overboard. Both Kurapika and Leorio simultaneously moved to save him but couldn't reach in time. Gon then rushed out and rescued the sailor.
"What a perfect synergy," Daniel thought, returning to the cabin. Soon after, Gon, Kurapika, Leorio, and the saved sailor joined him, with Kurapika and Leorio seemingly on better terms.
"I have a tip for you. To reach the exam site, head for the tree on the mountaintop," the captain advised Gon as he prepared to disembark at Dolle Harbor.
Gon shared this tip with Kurapika, Leorio, and Daniel.
"But the exam site is supposed to be in Zaban City," Leorio argued, skeptical of the captain's advice.
Despite his skepticism, Leorio eventually decided to accompany Gon, Kurapika, and Daniel to the mountaintop.
Soon, Leorio began to struggle, his physical stamina lagging behind the others, with Gon being the strongest, not counting Daniel.
The group eventually reached an apparently deserted area, where an old woman and several others appeared, acting as examiners for this stage. They had to answer the old woman's question to proceed.
Before Daniel and the others could respond, a man with two swords on his back rushed forward, claiming he could answer first.
The old woman's question was a classic dilemma: if both your mother and girlfriend were drowning, who would you save first?
"Of course, you save them both," Daniel thought to himself.
The man quickly answered and, with a smug look, walked away, only to scream moments later, likely meeting a grim fate.
Daniel chose not to answer such a pointless question, as there was no fixed answer, and everyone's response would differ based on their personality.
Following Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio, Daniel silently watched as they reached the guide at the mountaintop and observed.
"Impressive, he identified the two chimera ants," Daniel noted, watching Gon's interaction with the creatures. He focused on the chimera ants, trying to discern how Gon recognized the difference in their faces.
Kurapika and Leorio were equally intrigued.
Thanks to Gon, the chimera ant happily guided the group to Zaban City, where the Hunter Association protected non-aggressive magical beasts.
"Starving," Leorio complained as they arrived at the exam site, a small hotel, where he eagerly devoured a steak.
After everyone had eaten their fill, they descended to the actual exam site on the 100th underground floor, receiving their number tags. Daniel's number was 402.
The underground hall was already crowded with hundreds of examinees.
"Strange, there are only 398 people," Gon noted, using his heightened senses to count the people in the hall.
"You're wondering about that," a voice said nearby. "It's because some idiots got themselves killed earlier," said Tonpa, a short, fat, sleazy-looking veteran examinee.
"I've taken the Hunter Exam thirty-five times, so I have plenty of experience."
"You've taken it that many times without passing? What use is that experience?" Leorio interrupted.
"Don't underestimate the Hunter Exam. The people here are all experts, like that one
," Tonpa said, pointing out various skilled participants.
With his extensive experience, Tonpa was familiar with many repeat examinees. For most, passing the exam on the first try was difficult; initial attempts were often for gaining experience.
Tonpa's intelligence was impressive, quickly providing details about several notable participants.
While he spoke, some of those mentioned glared at him, but none interrupted.
