Chapter 135: Ambush
Alvin, Milia, and Nori were surprised to hear that, but they didn't show it on their faces. After what they passed in the war, they got some experience. Above all, that gave them an element of surprise if they were truly being targeted.
Linfel landed on Alvin's shoulder, and their group kept on their way back to the outside of the Forest. As they got further away from the settlement, the number of Maguses and Familiars around also went down. They didn't stop, though. Finally, they got far enough that it would be hard to bump into any Familiar or Magus, especially since they were following another route.
*Sush, sush, sush...*
Suddenly, four Maguses jumped out of the trees ahead, already using their Master Familiar connection with their Familiars. Linfel looked at them through the MCOM, but only one of them was marked as a Killer. They others seemed to be in the clean.
"Well, well, well... so we have Level Three newcomers. How unfortunate for you guys," said the guy with Killer Mark. He was obviously this group leader, especially since he was the only Level Five Magus there. "How about we make things easy for big brother Vantun here? Just transfer your Ventis Credits to me, and of course, show me your accounts, and then you can leave.
No harm done."
Alvin had a scared expression while Milia hid behind him. They were the full picture of a mouse in a trap. "P-Please, we don't want trouble. We don't have many Ventis Credits either. Wh-Why would you even care about the Ventis Credits of such low-level experts like us?" Alvin asked.
Vantun snorted in response. "It is exactly because you are this weak that you make a great target. Sure, I don't expect any of you to have many Ventis Credits, but it is a guaranteed income without any risks. Now, open your MCOM and show your credits."
Linfel looked at the other Maguses and Familiars who didn't have Killer Marks. No doubt they were there only as support and to make sure his group would escape. If a kill was truly necessary to be made, the Vantun guy most likely would do it. In exchange, he shared the Ventis Credits with his subordinates, and his subordinates could go back to the city to acquire anything Vantun needed.
Alvin, Linfel, Nori, and Milia quickly nodded at each other and took out their MCOMs. Sure enough, their full balances came into view, surprising Vantun. "Now, that's unexpected. I wonder how long it took you guys to earn all these Ventis Credits. Although it is not that much to me, it is still a lot more than I expected from ants like you."
Vantun then approached while releasing his Magic Energy, pressuring Alvin and Milia together with Linfel and Nori. His subordinates also approached from the sides with their weapons pointed at Linfel's group and ready to attack at any moment.
Out there in the open, one couldn't simply transfer their Ventis Credits. That only worked in the cities. To make the transfers, one had to make contact with the other's MCOM. Such a limitation was created exactly so the assailants would have to approach their targets, giving more chances for sudden developments. The Ventis Sect wanted to see as many struggles as possible.
Vantun touched Alvin's MCOM first, thinking him to be the leader of Linfel's group. None of his people were the least bit worried. They were all Level Four, while Vantun was Level Five. The difference in strength was just too great.
*Sush!*
Suddenly, a Magic Beast came running at their group. It wasn't anything out of the norm. They were in the middle of the Magic Beast Forest, after all. One of Vantun's companions immediately broke formation and faced the Level Four Magic Beast.
However, that sudden movement still robbed Vantun and his group out of their attention for a split second.
*Kabrum!*
From the very start, Linfel was connected to Alvin, and the two worked together. That allowed him to use not only his own Magic Energy but also Alvin's. That made him even faster since he could bring Magic Energy out from both his and Alvin's cores to complete his attack.
The same blade of Lightning, filled with Soul Power, appeared in mid-air and pierced through Vantun's body in half! Linfel didn't just aim at Vantun's body, though. He aimed at both Vantun and his Familiar, which had a breastplate form while using his Master Familiar connection. Linfel and Alvin, working together, took down a Level Five Magus and Familiar.
Everything was planned from the start. Linfel guided the group to this area until he found a Magic Beast inside his Magic Sense. Then, he stopped close enough to attract its attention eventually. When the Magic Beast came out, Vantun and the others were bound to divert their attention, even if just for an extremely short moment.
Milia wasn't any slower. The moment the Magic Beast appeared and one of the guys broke out to intercept it, she also connected to Nori and slashed out at one of the guys.
Too bad that she wasn't as fast as Linfel. The guy she aimed at was able to move in the last moment, avoiding a fatal injury. Nonetheless, he was still caught by the side, and his arm flew off while the flames cauterized the injury, adding to the pain. Milia had no mercy for anyone who helped with such schemes.
"You!" The third guy saw how a Level Five Magus died in an instant while his other friend lost an arm. However, he believed that only happened because they were careless, having underestimated Linfel's group because of their level.
Water Element gathered around his body before it froze and created several icicles that shot in Linfel and Alvin's direction. The guy who lost an arm was also furious. Unfortunately for him, the arm he lost was his dominant one, so he got a lot weaker, especially due to the pain. Milia followed with a barrage of attacks, not giving him time to recover. The battle was just starting.
