Chapter 31: Assistance
This was a contest of patience.
The coyote was waiting, waiting for the bobcat to abandon her cubs, and then it would enter the bush for a feast.
Chen Wen was also waiting, waiting for the coyote to let its guard down, so he could capture it in one fell swoop.
And the bobcat was waiting too.
Its keen sense of smell had detected the scent on Chen Wen.
The bobcat let out a short call, but only Chen Wen on the scene understood the meaning of the call.
"Help me!"
Chen Wen remained silent.
He was afraid of startling the coyote away.
The coyote's hearing, vision, and smell were even sharper than the bobcat's.
If Chen Wen hadn't gone seven days without a bath, making his scent very wilderness-like.
By now, the coyote would likely have noticed him.
But thanks to the scent on him, the coyote didn't notice Chen Wen's presence.
Instead, the bobcat, which had interacted with Chen Wen, recognized him first.
Seeing Chen Wen not making any moves, the bobcat felt somewhat desperate.
It turned its head and glanced at the bush.
There were still two kittens inside.
By the instinct in its genes, the bobcat planned to take the kittens out by tomorrow.
After its training, in three months, the three kittens would become hunters capable of hunting on their own.
But... now it seemed unlikely.
The kittens emitted soft cries, they were terrified.
The bobcat cried out mournfully, planning one last attempt.
The coyote seemed to realize something, it growled excitedly and moved closer.
The bobcat leaped up again, avoiding nothing, directly pouncing onto the coyote.
The coyote was a little taken aback by this attack.
As an experienced hunter, it had killed more than one litter of bobcat cubs.
This bobcat was the most special.
It not only chose to fight to the end but also had new attack strategies.
However...
What use was it?
The coyote opened its long mouth and exposed its ferocious canine teeth, biting hard into the bobcat's front shoulder.
The bobcat let out a scream, falling to the ground in pain.
The coyote rejoiced greatly.
This time it could not only feast on a litter of kittens, but it could also eat an adult bobcat!
It let its guard down, growling and tearing at the bobcat.
But just as the coyote was excited.
"I'll help you!"
A roaring shout, Chen Wen charged out from the bush with a machete, shouting, "Pin it down!"
The coyote couldn't understand, but the bobcat could!
A chance for a comeback!
Realizing this, the bobcat burst with all its strength, holding down the coyote with its claws, and attempted to bite the coyote's throat to restrain its movement.
The coyote was startled by the sudden appearance of Chen Wen.
Looking at the two-legged creature rushing over with a machete, it was terrified.
The innate instincts hidden in its genes made the coyote instinctively want to flee.
But the bobcat pressed down on it with all cost, biting it with its teeth.
Making it hard to escape.
Driven to the edge, the coyote also went fierce, biting into the bobcat's foreleg.
The bobcat, in pain, struggled violently.
Suddenly, there was a crisp snapping sound.
The bobcat screamed, its foreleg showing a bizarre bend.
This bite directly broke the bobcat's forearm!
Utterly ruthless!
"Let go!"
Chen Wen's facial muscles twitched at this sight.
Wild animals, damn they are ruthless!
But this was the end!
[Swift] kicks in, guess the speed?
Chen Wen precisely grabbed the coyote's neck scruff, lifting it up directly.
The sudden sense of weightlessness made the coyote let go, and the bobcat fell to the ground.
Chen Wen didn't have time to check on the bobcat's condition.
The sinister coyote, after releasing the bobcat, twisted its body, tilting its head to bite Chen Wen.
"Die!"
Chen Wen let go, dropping the coyote from mid-air.
Just when the coyote thought it could escape.
A cold glint sliced through the air, slashing into the coyote's body.
The machete was extremely sharp!
With Chen Wen's brute strength, this slash nearly severed the coyote in two.
A large amount of blood sprayed out, splashing onto the bobcat.
The bobcat was stimulated by the scent of blood.
As soon as the coyote landed, it fiercely pounced on it.
After all, as a member of the lynx family, the bobcat's ability to seize opportunity was strong.
Taking advantage of the coyote's agony, it went straight for the throat.
"Move aside, I'm faster!"
Chen Wen shouted, telling the bobcat to step back.
As he stepped on the coyote's head, he chopped at the coyote's neck with the machete.
The coyote couldn't even whimper before twitching to death.
Chen Wen took a deep breath, slowly calming his racing heart.
He looked down, the coyote was dead beyond any doubt.
He had achieved half his purpose on this trip; the coyote meat could be eaten tonight.
Documenting it was also an easy task.
But the other half of the purpose...
Randomly turning off the recording equipment, Chen Wen looked at the still enraged bobcat: "How are you?"
The bobcat paused for a moment, seemingly unused to communicating with humans.
It hesitated, then said: "I'm okay, this injury..."
As it spoke, the bobcat was about to walk.
But its body suddenly tilted, the entire cat collapsing to the ground with a cry.
"A fracture!"
Chen Wen looked serious, the bobcat's left forelimb showed a disturbing twist.
"It hurts..."
The bobcat cried out sorrowfully.
Chen Wen shook his head, saying: "This injury is too severe, if you recover on your own it might take a long time."
"It's best to have a veterinarian..."
Chen Wen scratched his head, not continuing.
Though bobcats were considered a protected species, there were still quite a few of them.
Even if treatment were possible, no veterinarian or animal protection agency would be willing to venture into the desert to rescue it.
"No... I can recover on my own."
The bobcat rose again, looking at Chen Wen: "Anyway, thank you."
It curled its left foreleg, limping back to its den.
Chen Wen watched this scene, shaking his head.
If this continued, even if the bobcat didn't die from infection, it would suffer from bone deformities, affecting its coordination and agility.
Eventually, it would die of starvation.
Chen Wen went back and retrieved the camera.
He aimed the lens at the bloody ground, turned on the recording equipment and said: "As you can see, I acted as the fisherman again, taking advantage of the bobcat and coyote's fight to ambush the coyote. This is my result."
Seeing this bloody scene, a monitor let out an involuntary gasp.
Other assistants who were idling around instantly looked over.
"Chen Wen killed a coyote!"
The monitor, knowing what the others wanted to hear, immediately spoke up.
With a clatter, a group of assistants gathered around.
Lin Jiawei felt somewhat helpless.
Being an assistant to Chen Wen was inconvenient because the screen was often blocked by others' heads.
However, Lin Jiawei wasn't worried.
He had witnessed it all firsthand.
The cooperation between Chen Wen and the bobcat was exceptionally splendid, but it seemed this bobcat wouldn't live long.
What a pity.
...
Chen Wen skinned the coyote on the spot.
On the deserted island, he learned some culinary skills from Du Feng.
Most animals, he dare process, and he could do it quite well.
After handling the coyote's carcass, Chen Wen left the viscera behind.
To give the bobcat something.
After Chen Wen left, the bobcat emerged from the den.
It managed to hold itself up, dragging the entrails into the den.
Letting the remaining two kittens have a hearty meal.
...
Returning to the shelter.
Chen Wen immediately began processing the coyote meat.
He cut the meat into slices, roasted them into jerky, as long-term storage.
While roasting the meat, Chen Wen pondered helping the bobcat and gaining its trust.
A fracture, this injury might be treated with a splint.
Chen Wen thought for a moment, deciding to make a splint.
