Chapter 788: 719 Undercover Standoff
Meanwhile, on a high mountain at the border of the Moon Demon Territory, a Demon Clan man accompanied by four figures in black robes looked down at the scenery below, his face always bearing a gentle and scholarly smile.
Behind him, an indifferent voice arose.
"What are you doing in a place like this?"
The speaker was a woman who approached silently to stand behind him.
She had a cold and beautiful face with a rather gentle aura, somewhat resembling a fairy descending from the moon to the mundane world. The only harshness lay in her eyes, adding an indescribable sense of danger to her presence.
The gentle and scholarly-looking Demon Clan man's smile did not change; however, when he turned around, his smile turned into an affected look of surprise.
"So you came too?"
He seemed genuinely taken aback.
The woman ignored his feigned surprise, her expression remaining icy cold.
"The leader has already issued an order for us to dispatch Angel Envoys and Envoys to locate the Hero and the Enchanting Demon before reinforcements from the Demon Clan arrive. What purpose does lingering here, wasting time, serve if you are not carrying out your mission?"
Her tone was filled with doubt and suspicion.
The aggressive stance forced the Demon Clan man to quickly raise his hands in surrender.
"Don't scare me like that. I can't withstand the intimidation of a Limit Level powerhouse like you," the Demon Clan man said reluctantly. "Haven't I already sent out my Angel Envoys and Envoys to search?"
"And what about you? You're just staying here to watch the show?" The woman didn't relent at his show of weakness, pressing further, "Are you planning to pay lip service to the leader's commands while defying them secretly?"
"That's an injustice," the Demon Clan man protested exaggeratedly. "When have I ever paid lip service to the leader's orders while defying them secretly?"
This statement made the woman's aura fluctuate with anger.
"Do you think you can deceive me?" The woman stared at him directly and said, "Whether it's recklessly creating a 'Mirage' by the Old Demon Clan Faction, releasing the Evil God Lilith, or even recommending an Imperial Concubine from the Empire that we know nothing about and suggesting that she could become the fourth Great Apostle, these little actions of yours all stray from the final goal of the leader, don't they?"
The Demon Clan man — Danass — cracked a slight smile and brazenly admitted to it.
"Indeed, these decisions were made on my initiative and have nothing to do with the father's... no, the leader's policy," Danass said calmly. "But what of it? Have my actions obstructed the organization in any way?"
"...And what about the matter involving the 'Sun'?" The woman glared fixedly at Danass, her voice turning icy. "If you've had dealings with Moro, then why didn't you inform us that the Hero who killed Moro possessed Transcend Level combat strength?"
At this point, the woman's aura became even more dangerous.
"If it weren't for you withholding information, the leader's plan wouldn't have failed, the Enchanting Demon wouldn't have escaped, and the 'Sun' wouldn't have died so unjustly. How will you bear this responsibility?"
As she spoke, the woman's Magic Power began to seep out, seemingly ready to strike Danass at any moment.
For his part, Danass could only offer a wry smile.
"I truly had no idea that Shane Beizitu was so powerful," Danass said with a bitter expression. "Moro never told me what she did in the Imperial City, and I didn't know she was killed by a hero with Transcend Level strength. I thought Moro was just a Limit Level powerhouse. It wouldn't be surprising at all if she was killed by a Legendary hero, would it?"
Even if just at the Legendary level, with the blessing of the Holy Sword, it wasn't impossible for a hero to kill a Limit Level powerhouse.
That was what Danass implied.
"I truly had no idea that the Hero had reached the level of Transcendence in strength," Danass sighed deeply.
Watching Danass like this, the woman's gaze flickered frequently.
After a moment, the woman finally spoke.
"Do you really know nothing?" the woman asked coldly. "Including what Moro did in the Imperial City, what happened there that day, and the abnormal phenomena that darkened the sky and reddened the earth—all the reasons behind these anomalies, are you truly unaware?"
"Yes." Danass met the woman's icy gaze with sincere eyes, "I only thought Moro would be a powerful ally that could strengthen us, the 'Primordial Demons,' which is why I established contact and invited her to join. Who would have known that she had her own schemes, even plans I wasn't aware of?"
Danass's tone seemed heartfelt, filled with grief and disappointment.
"If I had known she harbored ulterior motives, I would have never lent her the twelve Legendary Demon Infants. Now, not only is she dead, but her actions have also resulted in a loss of so many valuable sacrifices. I don't even know how to apologize to the leader," he lamented.
Upon hearing this, the woman finally fell completely silent.
After a long while, the woman let out a cold snort.
"I'll just choose to believe you for now," the woman said icily, "You better not be harboring any petty schemes or else..."
The woman extended a delicate jade hand and lightly touched a rock beside her.
In the next second, the rock was immediately enveloped in a soft glow as gentle as moonlight, and it directly disintegrated into sand, turning into a pile of gravel on the ground.
"Otherwise, this will be your fate."
Having left those words, the woman's body shimmered with moonlight and disappeared like grains of sand.
Danass was left alone, staring at the dust on the ground, as his face cleared of any trace of grief and disappointment.
"What a terrifying woman," Danass patted his chest, his voice tinged with lingering fear, "Indeed, compared to Parren, that man full of ambition but lacking brains, she is much more difficult to deal with."
In response to Danass's words came a childish voice that echoed only in his ears.
"She really is quite impressive. Just this move alone would probably be unstoppable by almost anyone at the Limit Level."
The childish voice of the girl was filled with admiration.
"I suppose so," Danass didn't disagree and added, "At least personally, I think she's probably the strongest among those at the Limit Level."
"I really don't know how you managed to find such talent." The girl sighed, "Transcendent level beings are rare as it is, with only three in the Demon Clan, three in the Divine Race, and none in the Human Race. In terms of numbers, they are even scarcer than Transcendent Level beings. Yet, within an Old Demon Clan Faction established for a thousand years, there are two – it seems your father really does have some capabilities."
"That's because you don't know the enormous price that came with the emergence of these two Limit Level beings," Danass said disparagingly, "Parren is not worth mentioning; he's just a petty man who dreams big. He only managed to reach the Limit Level with the help of many treasures from my father because he's followed my father the longest. Were it not for his 'Crimson Sun Hell' Unique Skill being somewhat noteworthy, he probably wouldn't have received such attention."
"That woman, however, made it to where she is today on her own. But originally, the extremely precious 'Demon King's Body' would not have been discarded if not for her birth."
"You could say, both Limit Level beings are built upon a huge price, or rather, an enormous sacrifice."
Danass's words were met with the girl's light laughter.
"So that's why you've been secretly establishing several Demon Refining Ceremony sites, using resources from 'Primordial Demons' to cultivate Limit Level Refined Demons, and then using these Limit Level Refined Demons as materials to create likewise Limit Level Demon Warriors that are utterly obedient to you?"
The girl unveiled such secrets.
"Can't help it. Since I myself cannot achieve the Limit Level, I had to use some ingenuity with Magic Life," Danass laughed lightly and said, "My father managed to create two Limit Level Great Apostles, and as a son, how could I not create a few Limit Level Demon Warriors to match?"
"Aren't you afraid that if this gets out, you'll be obliterated by your father in the name of justice?" the girl teased, "Several Limit Level sacrifices would surely be a great help in completing the 'Seventh Demon.' You even told my maidservant that it was with your father's consent – now that seems to be a huge lie."
"Who would know?" Danass felt no shame and stated as if it were a matter of course, "Do you think those missing Demon Infants I lent to your maidservant are now?"
Upon hearing Danass's words, the girl suddenly understood.
"So you swapped those Demon Infants into the ceremonial facilities you set up, using them as a means to fool your father's eyes?"
The girl once again sighed out loud.
"After all, no one knows that the Demon Infants I've cultivated have already reached the Limit Level," Danass said meaningfully, "Just place them there, and who would know that those Legendary level Demon Infants aren't the ones I've painstakingly cultivated using organization resources?"
"Clever little fellow," the girl said with a mix of laughter and dismay, "It's a pity that such Limit Level beings created in this manner only possess power in vain and will never awaken Unique Skills. When facing a real Limit Level powerhouse, they would hardly be a match."
"Then we'll use numbers to compensate," Danass said unconcernedly, "If one isn't enough, then two, if two isn't enough, then four. There's always a way to contend with a true Limit Level being."
"But don't forget," the girl reminded, "your ultimate goal isn't just the Limit Level."
"I know," Danass said with a light chuckle, "That's why I can't let my father succeed in devouring the Enchanting Demon."
"Have you figured out how to deal with your father then?" the girl asked, "Losing an Apostle who has been cultivated for a long time and having a plan that has been in the works for hundreds of years fail, he must be furious by now. Just like that little 'Moon' girl earlier, he must have started to suspect you, right?"
"Don't worry," Danass narrowed his eyes and smiled, "At the right time, I will tell him the whereabouts of Shane Beizitu and Enchanting Demon Xiefuni to exert some effort and temporarily allay his suspicions."
Seeing Danass's confident smile, as if everything was planned, the girl chuckled lightly and said no more.
Danass then returned his gaze forward.
"In this world, the chance at Transcendence is too elusive."
"But I desire that chance, so I can only apologize to you."
"My poor father..."
