Chapter 521: Unexpected Strength
Xia Tian held a paper box almost the size of a milk crate in her arms, unsure of what it contained.
For her, the weight seemed quite burdensome. This made her need to stop occasionally while walking to prop it up with her knee, preventing the contents from falling.
Under the scorching sun, a thin layer of sweat quickly appeared on her forehead.
Nan Zhihao, seeing this, despite the many questions in his mind, couldn't help but want to step forward to assist.
Xia Tian smiled and politely declined: "Heave ho... Mr. Nan, you might have heard some details about the case hearing from friends lately, isn't it strange that I'm particularly concerned about your case? And today, calling you out of the blue, not discussing matters inside the court?"
Suddenly turning to serious topics caught Nan Zhihao off guard for a moment.
He tugged at his mask, his gaze fixed on the floor tiles two meters ahead: "Mm, I'm really grateful to Assistant Xia. According to what my friends say, staff that liaise with them wouldn't be so attentive in guiding them on preparing evidence..."
Xia Tian nodded with a smile: "It's because my dad is in the police."
Nan Zhihao was stunned.
Xia Tian paused to catch her breath, and said with a smile: "When I was back home, I met some police uncles and brothers. They would sometimes encounter scammers. Sometimes due to lack of experience, or encountering cunning groups, many were deceived."
"..." Nan Zhihao blinked his eyes.
"But... for various reasons," Xia Tian said, "they eventually got justice, but the results often left something to be desired, feeling like it fell just short."
"So when I saw your case, Mr. Nan, I particularly noticed it. You and others are retired military personnel, and the group's tactics were so vile. I wanted to help you gain compensation to a reasonable extent and let that group receive their due punishment."
The undisguised sincerity in her words made Nan Zhihao involuntarily raise his head to look in Xia Tian's direction.
The next second, he lowered his head, feeling unable to meet the bright sparkle in Xia Tian's eyes.
After a pause, Nan Zhihao said: "Yes, I know. I know Assistant Xia is considering for me, and so is that lawyer..."
"But, there will be many people during the hearing, right? I heard there will be a live broadcast? I feel unprepared, and recently I'm considering returning..."
Xia Tian said: "Yes, there will be many people, and possibly a live broadcast, because the court wants to make this case a typical one—but none of that matters anymore."
Being interrupted, Nan Zhihao paused again.
What Xia Tian said afterward left him even more stunned.
All he heard was Xia Tian continuing: "We here are just providing you a reference and choice, Mr. Nan, and in the end, however you choose, we will respect your wishes."
Her smile seemed to momentarily overshadow the sun's light: "Our job is only to maintain during the case review period. But the life afterward is your own, Mr. Nan. We know that no matter what decision, it is a difficult one for you; therefore, whatever decision you make, we respect it."
Xia Tian took a breath, shook her head, her hair and cheeks covered with a sheen of sweat, but with this motion, a faint fragrance seemed to linger.
Then she showed an apologetic expression: "Initially, this matter should have ended here, but regardless of the final outcome, there's something I feel you need to know. That's why I called you here specifically today, and in this manner of conversation—I'm really sorry."
"No, no..." The sudden apology made Nan Zhihao wave his hand.
Then he pressed his lips together, unable to resist asking: "So, what's the matter today?"
"It's about that group." Xia Tian replied.
The young girl's expression grew serious: "They are a very meticulous and experienced crime group. They started committing crimes very early on and left hardly any traces. In theory, wanting to catch them still requires the police to put in significant effort over a long period."
"But—they came across you, Mr. Nan."
This puzzled Nan Zhihao, making him point to himself: "Me?"
Xia Tian nodded: "Previous victims either lacked vigilance and were led by the nose, realizing only after being scammed; or lost the courage to resist after being threatened, even not daring to report it; or were overly cautious and hung up immediately upon detecting signs of fraud—basically, not leaving any useful clues."
"But you are different, Mr. Nan. You ran to the police station at the first instance of receiving a scam call, keeping the other side engaged with conversation, and ultimately handed your phone to an officer while the scam was still happening."
"Although we couldn't stop the criminals from harming you in time..." Xia Tian's expression showed some regret.
Then she became excited: "But because your phone arrived promptly, the police technicians were able to seize a precious opportunity to backtrack and obtain important leads, leading to their capture!"
She looked at Nan Zhihao, her eyes shining even brighter: "In other words, it's because of your efforts that we were able to break this group. Also, because of that, your comrades have a chance for justice."
"Mr. Nan, you're the biggest contributor to this case!"
"You might not want to appear in court, and might not pay attention to this case afterward. But about this message, I believe it's important you know!"
Nan Zhihao was stunned.
His steps halted, as if he were a statue, unmoving.
The scorching sunlight baked his dark hat, mask, and jacket, but he seemed oblivious.
By the time Xia Tian walked nearly three meters away, his hands and feet began to tremble.
But next, he realized something: "Assistant Xia, thank you... but are these things okay to tell me? Shouldn't this be confidential? Are you alright?"
Having been in the military, Nan Zhihao knew that some things, when spoken out, could potentially have negative consequences.
So even though he was excited, he instinctively raised a concern for the girl in front of him.
Xia Tian waved the large paper box in her hands with a radiant smile: "Oh, I resigned today. See, these are all my belongings."
Nan Zhihao was stunned.
He didn't know how many times he had reacted this way today.
"I was just an intern, planning to go home in a few days. So today, I could invite you over in a personal capacity, and reveal appropriately parts that don't involve the core of the case."
Xia Tian blinked: "Of course, if it gets out, the effect might not be great... but I believe Mr. Nan won't do such a thing, right?"
Nan Zhihao didn't know how he felt now.
He only felt a strength seemingly not his own welling up inside, controlling him to nod in agreement with this girl more dazzling than the sunlight.
