Chapter 519: Something Feels Off
Seeing Nan Zhubin behind him, Chonghui breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Nan Zhubin glanced at Chonghui and the phone in his hand, and asked, "Senior sister?"
Speaking of which, he hadn't really been in touch with Weng Pinting for a while.
Chonghui nodded and also looked at the coffee Nan Zhubin was holding. He didn't speak, but the meaning was clear: You have this, why come to the break room?
Nan Zhubin was busy with his own task: "The coffee's taste is too light, I wanted to add more..."
Chonghui hesitated to speak. He wanted to advise Nan Zhubin that drinking too much coffee might keep him awake, even during the day, but then he remembered that this junior's sleep quality seemed surprisingly good.
With his concentrated coffee in hand, Nan Zhubin returned to his workstation, grabbed the sorted materials, and knocked on Bai Qinghua's office door.
Knock, knock, knock—
"Teacher, it's me." Nan Zhubin called out.
"Come in!"
Opening the door, he saw Bai Qinghua lying on the sofa with a serious face, holding his phone.
Light and shadow shifted on the phone screen, and intense battle sounds occasionally erupted.
"Zhuren." Bai Qinghua greeted him before Nan Zhubin could speak, "Have you played this game before? This level..."
Nan Zhubin said with a tone full of helplessness, "Teacher, I don't play games."
Bai Qinghua's face became even more helpless: "Dahui too, Qian Qian as well. Focusing on studies and work is good, but you guys need balance. Old Zhang in the lab next door always plays five-player games with students, turning the office into an internet café..."
Speaking of which, Bai Qinghua remembered something: "Oh right, you're preparing for exams, so better hold off on games for now."
As he spoke, Bai Qinghua's phone emitted an ominous sound, likely the music of defeat.
His expression quickly turned lackluster. He tossed the phone aside and sipped from his tea cup, "What's up?"
Nan Zhubin said, "I've confirmed with the court, and I've sorted the final materials to email you."
"Oh, that matter." Bai Qinghua nodded slightly, "I wanted to tell you when I saw you earlier — the air conditioning is broken, you can work in my office, though you were so focused you didn't notice me…"
As Bai Qinghua spoke, he got up from the sofa, patted his leg, and finally sat at the desk, opening the computer.
While looking at the materials Nan Zhubin had prepared, he instructed, "Go call Dahui in too, there are some things I need to tell all of you."
This was why Bai Qinghua came to the company today.
A few days from now, in the court hearing, Nan Zhubin will appear as Nan Zhihao's psychological consultant, serving as a witness to explain Nan Zhihao's mental state.
Whereas Bai Qinghua, as an expert witness, aims to prove the criminal group's subjective intent of psychological manipulation and mental harm to the victims.
According to the Criminal Procedure Law, its interpretation, and the Expert Witness Review Guidelines, this work demands higher qualifications and educational background.
Including, but not limited to, traceable doctoral degrees, national first-level psychological consultant qualification, etc.
Additionally, there are some non-essential but important titles, such as being a university psychology professor, holding positions in provincial-level psychology committees, and so forth.
Hence, Bai Qinghua needs to be present himself.
"Otherwise, I felt you could handle it, saving me an extra task." Bai Qinghua sighed to Nan Zhubin, having great trust in him.
Nan Zhubin shrugged.
"However, after you enroll, you can sign up for the second-level consultant exam." Bai Qinghua mused, "Before you graduate, there aren't many certificates you can earn. Many jobs outside mainly look at these…"
Here he was, planning for exams before even enrolling.
As he spoke, Chonghui knocked and entered.
As an attending expert witness, Bai Qinghua could bring assistants. Nan Zhubin, already a witness, left the extra spot for Chonghui.
No harm in attending, it's a learning experience.
Of course, there was the usual reminder. Bai Qinghua disliked urging students last minute on site, preferring to explain precautions beforehand, letting students freely perform within rules at the venue.
He was there to back them up, preventing any chaos.
Who knows, maybe there'll be surprises?
Nan Zhubin got up to pour tea for himself and Chonghui, and Bai Qinghua leisurely continued speaking.
...
There wasn't much content to explain. Before Nan Zhubin could refill the tea, Bai Qinghua had already finished today's tasks.
After Chonghui left, Bai Qinghua eagerly gave Nan Zhubin the desk, readying to drive back to the lab's esports room.
Before leaving, he waved his phone at Nan Zhubin, "By the way, don't tell your senior sister about this."
With a "bang," the door closed.
Nan Zhubin blinked, showing a sympathetic look, unsure of what to say for a moment.
Might as well continue working.
Just as Nan Zhubin was about to focus on the boss's exclusive, clearly better-computer setup than the ones outside, his phone suddenly vibrated.
[Xia Tian: Teacher Nan, are you available this afternoon? Can I come see you?]
Nan Zhubin blinked.
[Nan Zhubin: Sure, let me know when you're departing.]
After sending the message, Nan Zhubin began thinking.
Given the nature of the work, Xia Tian theoretically shouldn't be contacting him privately now.
Could something have changed in the case?
With that doubt, the time arrived in the afternoon.
Seeing Xia Tian arrive alone increased Nan Zhubin's surprise.
"Teacher Nan, I'm here about Nan Zhihao's matter." Xia Tian said straightforwardly, pursing her lips.
Nan Zhubin sensed the young girl seemed bothered, showing a complex expression. Having not seen her for days, she surprisingly skipped pleasantries.
Nan Zhubin softly asked, "What's wrong?"
"Well, about three days ago, we contacted him regarding enriching evidence and asked if he wanted to file a private lawsuit," Xia Tian explained, "At the time, he seemed proactive, saying he would consider it and appeared to agree."
"But yesterday, when I called again, he clearly refused. His tone and attitude were entirely different from before."
Nan Zhubin hesitated, sensing something was amiss.
On one hand, it was the visitor's change.
On the other hand, it was Xia Tian's current state.
Surely, Xia Tian discussing these matters with him isn't a breach?
