Chapter 112.2

A Pillowcase Made Of Slime Material

Satisfied with his first completed piece, Yuuri smiled broadly, but even after his explanation, Yakk still couldn’t make sense of it. Well, that’s no surprise. If anyone managed to fully understand after that conversation, their comprehension skills would be nothing short of phenomenal. Realizing from Yakk’s reaction that his explanation might have been a bit lacking, Yuuri tapped the pillow cover lightly and encouraged Yakk to touch it. Yakk, following the prompt, ran his hand over the material. Being made from a water-attribute blue slime, it felt refreshingly cool to the touch. It wasn’t as cold as ice, but it was pleasantly cooling, providing a soothing sensation that seemed to alleviate the heat.

“If you put this on your pillow, it’ll feel a little cooler when you sleep, don’t you think?”

“Oh.”

“I thought it might help make things less stuffy if you cooled the back of your neck.”

“…Yuuri, this is…”

“I had a bunch made. Want one, Yakk?”

“I’ll take one.”

Yakk carefully accepted the slime pillow cover that Yuuri handed him. Coming from a farming village, Yakk was all too familiar with summer’s heat. Even so, sweltering nights were sweltering nights. If something could make sleep more comfortable, well, who wouldn’t take advantage of it? Probably no one.

As Yakk gleefully clutched the pillow cover and returned to his room, Yuuri kept on diligently working. He busily applied the special adhesive material to attach straps to the covers, humming as he worked. For Yuuri, creating something was always a delight. It was fun to turn an idea into reality.

By the time he was done, he had managed to make ten pillow covers from the blue slime material in the storage. Yuuri himself didn’t need one, thanks to Rooks’s comforting presence. Yakk had already taken one, leaving Yuuri to ponder who else might appreciate them. He decided to give them to those who struggled with the heat—perhaps someone like the delicate scholar in the group.

As he mulled over who to distribute the covers to, he spotted Lelei running toward him, her face beaming. Behind her, Yakk waved a hand, though his other hand was tightly gripping his pillow cover, as if to fend off an attempted theft. Yuuri didn’t know exactly what had happened, but he had a pretty good guess, and it made him smile wryly.

“Lelei, what’s up? You’re smiling an awful lot.”

“Yuuri! Is it true you have cool pillow covers?”

“They’re not exactly ‘cool’, just sort of refreshingly cool.”

“Let me have one, please!”

“Sure, here you go.”

“Wow, it’s so nice and cool! This is going to help me sleep so well!”

Lelei’s excitement made Yuuri tilt his head curiously. He couldn’t understand why she was making such a big deal out of it. The one who answered his unspoken question wasn’t Lelei but Jake, who had somehow appeared without anyone noticing. Jake’s subtle presence was a quirk everyone had come to accept. Despite lacking any stealth-related skills useful for combat, Jake often managed to just… be there without anyone realizing.

“She inherited her catlike traits from her father, so she’s not fond of the heat.”

“Really? She’s always so energetic, though.”

“She may have plenty of stamina, but she’s told me she despises the heat.”

“Huh, I see. Oh, Jake, would you like one too?”

“Yes, please. By the way, Yuuri, what made you think of this?”

“I sleep with Rooks at night, and he feels nice and cool.”

“Ah, I see.”

Lelei’s father was a feline beastman, so while she resembled her human mother in appearance, her physical traits seemed to take after her father. Cats were known for seeking out cool places, so it made sense that she would prefer the cold over the heat. For now, Yuuri was content seeing how happy the cool pillow cover made her.

“This is wonderfully soothing. I think I’ll sleep soundly tonight,” Jake said.

“If you stopped reading before bed, you might sleep even better, you know.”

“…”

“Staying up too late reading is bad for your eyes, too.”

Though Yuuri was smiling nonchalantly, his aura had taken on a slightly ominous edge. He was mildly upset. Jake, a self-proclaimed bookworm, had a bad habit of reading late into the night—or worse, until dawn—regularly. It wasn’t uncommon for him to collapse from exhaustion, only to repeat the behavior, so Yuuri’s mild irritation was entirely justified.

The cool pillow covers made from slime material were a big hit, and within a few days, everyone in the group had one. After all, a good night’s sleep is important!
