Chapter 180: Chairman Zala's Inauguration Ceremony
After initiating his upgrade, He Kui felt a surge of strength flow from his heart to his limbs. His Haro-building speed had increased slightly, and his work was now more refined. In the future, he might even integrate a range of functions beyond Phantom Particles into Haros.
Without hesitation, He Kui swiftly gathered materials from his drawer and began assembling a Haro with an even more intricate internal structure. "With this level of precision, I can incorporate more complex electronic components and systems. The hardware requirements for developing an AI-enhanced Haro have finally been met."
The next step was the software. Despite having dedicated servers, training AI would still require significant time, but perhaps Serena's expertise would prove useful.
He Kui glanced at the numbers in his virtual display:
> [Microcomponent Processing S-Class: (100465/1000000)]
It seemed S-Class wasn't the limit of his ability. If there truly was another level, he might even create technology beyond what this world had ever seen. But such a goal was distant—achieving the next tier would require ten times the progress he had now.
For now, S-Class was more than enough to tackle the current demands of warfare. Hearing Shi He calling from the living room, he responded, set down the Haro, and went out to join her.
With S-Class capability, he could begin upgrades on both the Round Guard and Scream Hawk. But for now, a brief respite was in order.
Two days later, the Freedom, newly named by Chairman Zala, had reached completion and was ready for extreme testing. During this time, He Kui and Erin received invitations to attend the inauguration ceremony for the new chairman in Aprilus City.
When they arrived, Aprilus City looked much the same as ever, vibrant with greenery. But one thing was different—everyone they saw through the windows appeared tense, with furrowed brows. He Kui understood what lay behind those expressions. The people of Aprilus City had a clear political leaning.
"The protests here are becoming more frequent," Erin remarked from the car. "Especially since Zala's election as Chairman."
"Well, they're all supporters of Clyne," He Kui replied.
Clyne had established a solid foundation in this city, so it wasn't surprising that the people here showed resistance to the new leadership.
"True. But their protests also concern us," Erin added, causing He Kui to glance at her in confusion. "They're protesting our weapons development, accusing us of creating tools for killing. It's as if they've become obsessed with the idea."
He Kui was speechless. Common sense dictated that weapons were developed to protect them, not harm them. Even in the more neutral May City, weapons manufacturing was widely accepted as a means of defense.
Then again, considering the extremists in Zala's faction willing to sacrifice Julius Seven by crashing it into Earth, or the zealots of Blue Cosmos intent on using nuclear missiles against PLANT, He Kui wasn't surprised.
After discussing the possible implications of Zala's election, they soon arrived at the Supreme Council Building.
In an effort to avoid extravagance, Zala had opted to forego a banquet. After the ceremony, attendees were expected to disperse quickly. He Kui and Erin were no exception, as they needed to return to their work on Freedom the next day.
As they exited the car, He Kui spotted a familiar, radiant figure in the glare of the media lights at the main entrance. Sensing his gaze, Lacus turned and waved enthusiastically at him, attracting the attention of nearby reporters, who promptly shifted their cameras toward He Kui and Erin.
"…Did you do something to upset Clyne?" Erin murmured.
"What?"
"If you hadn't, she wouldn't be drawing attention to you at a time like this."
Everyone knew that the Clyne faction had lost in the recent council election. Unless someone genuinely supported their ideals or was deeply affiliated with them, most people were now keeping a low profile.
"Not that I'm aware of," he replied, concealing his close connection with Lacus. To him, her wave felt like harmless teasing, and he doubted Chairman Zala would care about such trivial gestures. Lacus was just playfully testing him, something he'd grown accustomed to. In fact, he found it rather endearing.
Chatting as they approached the grand entrance, they noticed that while there was no red carpet, numerous media cameras lined the marble floors on either side.
"Director Erin, Director He, it's rumored that the two of you played significant roles in developing the new Gat-X suits now deployed in ZAFT's forces. How do they compare to the standard GINNs in terms of performance?" one reporter asked.
"We'll have more details at the upcoming public launch of these new models. For now, let's keep our focus on Chairman Zala's inauguration," Erin replied, expertly sidestepping the question as they moved forward.
Earth Alliance reporters had long since been barred from PLANT, leaving only local media, who, while private, were carefully screened to avoid provocations or loaded questions.
Beyond the media, they entered the main hall for the inauguration ceremony. It was the same place where He Kui had previously received his medal, but now it featured additional large screens displaying PLANT's history and aspirations for the future—from their beginnings under oppression to their vision for a flourishing society.
In the center of the hall, numerous officials and officers of similar or higher ranks to He Kui mingled and engaged in conversation. Despite the recent setback in the council election, Lacus seemed to retain her usual popularity, surrounded by a throng of people eager
for her attention.
The atmosphere was unexpectedly relaxed.
